12 MELK S GOLDEN ABBEY As you sail along a peaceful stretch of the Danube, you approach a gold and ivory imperial fortress, resplendent with elegant details. Once a palace, the abbey at Melk is now a Benedictine monastery, school, museum and a library housing some 80,000 rare books and scrolls. At 5:30 p.m. on the Friday before the first Advent Sunday, the beautiful Christmas Angel recites a prologue from the gallery of the Church of Our Lady. This may explain why you will see so many castles while cruising the 35-mile stretch of the Rhine between Mainz and Bonn.
