1 MARKET REPORT WEEK BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 1 ST JUNE The dry freight market remains totally uninspired and much of the reason for that has to be the uncertainty that President Trump s trade tariffs etc are currently causing towards world trade. Poor grain harvests in S.America (Argentina and Brazil), and a lack of grain exports from USA due to trade uncertainty with China etc are further dampening the BDI. The dry indexes of the past 2 weeks amply demonstrate the uncertainty that has now crept in to the panamaxes, Supras and Handys, while the capes, as usual, only need a few shipment orders by China for their fortunes to swing upwards again: weeks 21 and 22 of the dry indexes and overall BDI read as follows: Week BDI: -15.5%, +7% w-o-w. BCI: -32.0%, +15% BPI: -4.5%, +0.5% BSI: +0.2%, -1% BHSI: -0.5%, -0.5% The current seemingly short to medium term uncertain earning abilities of bulkers has now fairly much scared off most single ship private buyers so most deals we are seeing today are either large corporations taking advantage of distressed fleet sales and also Chinese buyers who are still hovering up built bulkers before updated domestic rules excludes their ability to buy vessels of such vintage. In the tanker S+P sector if it was not for Greek owners buying all the 13 Toisa tankers from that fleet plus some other Greek to Greek sales of Aframaxes, there would currently be virtually no tanker S+P movements at all, however, if OPEC do now increase output maybe we will see some rate improvements in due course. Sub continent recycling demand for tonnage fortunately remains strong with firm levels still on offer. After an initial surge of tankers into the newly reopened Pakistan market the rates there have weakened a little but India appears to be taking up any slack. Prices from the Sub-Continent today are generally about US$ 430 to 440 for tankers, about US$ 410 to 420 for bulkers depending on size etc while container vessels continue to receive the highest offers at around US$ 450 to 460 per. 1
