Day 6 - Pico - Pico is famous for its fortified Verdelho wine, the extensive vineyards are so impressive that in 2002 UNESCO designated them a World Heritage Site. We hope to see vast bird colonies and other natural wonders. ITINERARY XVAHNX - Day 1 Longyearbyen - Embark on the expedition ship in the afternoon and depart Longyearbyen in the evening. Day 2-3 West SPITSBERGEN Coast of Spitsbergen - Our two days will be planned to take advantage of local ice and weather conditions. Longyearbyen Svalbard is one of the few places on the planet to offer such a plethora of natural and historical extravaganzas. Scoresby Sound Keep a constant lookout for the unique wildlife that inhabits this Arctic wilderness including polar bears, walrus and Svalbard s species of reindeer. Day 4-5 D E N M A R K S T R A I T Greenland Sea - Keep an eye out for majestic ICELAND whales, which are known to feed here in the summer Reykjavik N months. We may see orca, humpback and minke whales as well as white-beaked dolphins. Enjoy lectures by expedition experts, who will educate us on the animals and destinations that we have seen and what might lie ahead. On the evening of Day 5 we should sight land and begin our exploration of the coast line as we head south East Greenland and Scorsbeysund - Slowly moving south, explore along the eastern coast of Greenland. In this remote and untouched landscape look for wildlife such as walruses, seals, narwhals, polar bears, muskoxen, wolves, foxes, ermine, arctic hares, lemmings, and a variety of birds. We will board our Zodiacs to get a closer look at some of the birdlife and to walk in the tundra. Our southward journey will culminate in Scoresbysund which is one of the largest fjord systems in the world. Day Denmark Strait - We continue our lecture series while watching the seas for whales as we head towards Iceland and the steaming hot springs of Reykjavik. The view is often complemented by soaring fulmars, kittiwakes, gannets, guillemots, and razorbills. Visit historic sites such as the Bergen Orkney Islands standing stones of Stennes, the intriguing Ring of Brodgar, SCOTLAND Edinburgh village of Skara Brae and the 5,000 year old tomb of Maes Howe. Day 3 Shetland Islands - Continue northwards to the remote Shetland Islands: an engaging mix of Scotland and Scandinavia, with spectacular coastlines, varied and abundant bird life and a number of archaeological sites dating back thousands of years. Day 4 Bergen, Norway - Beautiful Bergen is set on a fjord and known as the city of seven hills. Explore the city by coach and by foot, spending time around the Bryggens Wharf - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 5 Runde & Alesund - Runde offers us some fantastic Zodiac explorations. Visit a local aquarium in pretty Alesund. Day 6 Trondheim - The medieval history of Trondheim is most evident with a visit to the ominous Niadros Cathedral, erected in the 11th Century. Day 7-8 Norwegian Fjords and Lofoten Islands - The rugged coastline of Central Norway features some of the world s most famous and stunningly beautiful fjords. We will go ashore in the Lofoten islands and get a taste of the local Viking history Day 9 Andoya Island - Today is whale watching day! The cold, deep waters around Andoya Island make this area a well known whale-watching area. Sperm whales are the most abundant but there is the possibility to see minke, pilot or humpback whales. Day 10 Tromso - Tromso, the capital of northern Norway, is known as the Gateway to the Arctic since so many arctic expeditions originated here. Day 11 Nordkapp - Nordkapp boasts to be the most northerly point in Europe. Day 12 Bear Island - Zodiac cruises take us around mist-shrouded Bear Island, populated by thousands of fulmars, kittiwakes, guillemost and gulls; this is a birdwatcher s paradise and the views are spectacular. Days Svalbard - Svalbard is an archipelago of deep fjords, mountains and massive ice sheets. Keep your eyes open for walrus, seals, reindeer, arctic foxes and, of course polar bears.
