2 What are Second Exits? Second exits serve three functions: As a primary exit if the main exit is blocked in an emergency As an additional exit in an emergency As a convenience to customers Castle Frank Second Exit Dufferin Station Second Exit September 23, 2014 Wellesley Station Second Exit and Automatic Entrance 2

3 Second Exits Considerations Effective second exits must provide: A fast way out of the station Convenience to encourage day-to-day use and familiarity in an emergency Integration into the neighbourhood Woodbine Station Second Exit (Under Construction) 3

4 Second Exits Background Most subway stations have more than one exit All new TTC stations are built with at least two exits 2002 Fire & Life Safety Assessment Study identified 14 priority stations needing a second exit TTC voluntary program retrofitting existing stations to provide an additional way out in case of emergency and to improve customer convenience In 2009, the TTC Board approved an automatic entrance, to be combined with the second exit at Wellesley Station 4

5 Status of Second Exit Program 14 stations identified as priority: Broadview, Castle Frank, Dufferin and Pape complete Wellesley planning complete Woodbine under construction 8 to be planned: Dufferin Station Second Exit Chester, College, Donlands, Dundas, Dundas West, Greenwood, Museum and Summerhill Pape Station Second Exit 5

9 Proposed Development at 17 Dundonald Street A developer has proposed that the second exit and automatic entrance be housed within the new condominium development at 17 Dundonald Coordination is ongoing between the development and the Second Exit and Automatic Entrance project Existing property at 17 Dundonald Conceptual rendering of 17 Dundonald with Wellesley Station second exit/automatic entrance integration after completion of TTC & Developer's construction 9

10 TTC Construction Schedule TTC Construction is scheduled to begin in Fall 2014 Work will require a full road closure in front of 15 Dundonald Street The construction is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2017 The opening of the new exit/entrance will be coordinated with the condominium development completion 10

12 What to Expect During Construction Community: TTC Contractor will comply with City noise bylaws Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Saturday 9:00 am to 7:00 pm Work outside these hours will be very limited and only when essential Sequence work in phases to reduce impact to the community Provide standard dust mitigation measures 12

13 What to Expect During Construction Community: Sewer line and water line will be relocated in the early stages of the project A few hours of water disruption will be required for 15 Dundonald residents - advanced notice will be provided 13

14 What to Expect During Construction Vehicular Traffic: Street to be closed to vehicular traffic in front of 15 Dundonald TTC Service: No impact to Wellesley Station subway or bus services Dundonald will become a two-way street for duration of project Driveway Access to 15 Dundonald Maintained North pedestrian path maintained Road Closure Street parking removed to accommodate two lanes of traffic in Construction Zone Dundonald St each direction Laneway access west of 15 Dundonald Yonge Street Proposed Hoarding 15 Dundonald 17 Dundonald 19 Dundonald Street property will be maintained Pedestrians: The pedestrian walkway between Back Laneway Maintained Pedestrian Walkway Closed Wellesley and Dundonald will be closed for duration of the project Wellesley Station Wellesley Street East An east-west pedestrian pathway on the north side of Dundonald Street will be maintained as best as possible.
