6 Just a couple thoughts... A note to our Employers! I wonder if you have asked us to NOT send s to you, as you are busy? You see, sometimes we offer discounts and info that you could find valuable, and we often ask for your input on things!! Pretty much every month during the Workamper Campfire webinar, one or both of these questions come up - I m Canadian and want to Workamp in the U.S.? How do I do this? and How can I Workamp in Canada? Since this is such a FAQ, I think it would beneficial to do a whole, one hour webinar on the topic (open to anyone to attend). We are looking for folks who would like to participate. RV Home Show in WKN Magazine Choosing your home on wheels is a big decision. WKN would like to assist folks still dreaming of acquiring their rig and others who are thinking about investing in a different home. I would appreciate your input on this topic! In order of deliciousness, they are 1) Ben & Jerry s Ice Cream 2) Cabot Creamery Cheddar cheese 3) Cold Hollow Apple Cider Donuts 4) Pure Vermont maple syrup! MmmMmMm! I recently had the opportunity to take my wonderful wife to Vermont and introduce her to all of these scrumptious flavors and treats Vermont has to offer. It was a very quick 4-day trip to my old stomping grounds, but it was oh so much fun, and educational too! Did you know Ben & Jerry started their first ice cream shop in an old gas station in Burlington, Vermont? Eight years later, they started touring the country and distributing free scoops in a modified mobile home that they dubbed the Cowmobile. Check out the picture of Jody and I standing in front of the Cowmobile that now resides outside of the Ben & Jerry s factory in Waterbury, VT. Or even better, take a trip to beautiful Vermont and visit the Cowmobile for yourself! You ll get some free ice cream to sample...and their ain t nothing much better than free ice cream, in my humble opinion. Addressing Your Address The address change tool at logout/settings does not do the requested change automatically. We handle these manually, hopefully the same day you send the request, so if you don t see the change right away there is no need to resubmit. Also, if you renew through the web page, the shipping address you provide will be updated on your account so there is no need to do a separate address change. If you need to make changes to mailing address, resume or your community profile each has to be done separately as these elements are not linked together. Consider What s Before Is your address working for you or against you? Consider your address as an extension of your resume when you contact an employer. Most I have seen are fine, but I have seen a few that could cause an employer to perhaps have second thoughts - so just consider your address: Is it out there where it might give less than the positive impression you desire when seeking a position? 7 you to take the next logical step. From here, it is easier to add additional steps that will help you reach the goal you set for taking this program or course. If you participated in courses or Webinars last year and failed to take these steps, it s not too late to salvage something. Find your notes, or listen to a playback if available, and do these steps now. It might also be time to go back and identify a few more steps you can take to move you forward even more. There are three situations that are key to your success as a Workamper and finding employment all require follow up. Courses First is following up when you take a course. For those who attended the Workamper Rendezvous in April or October, or who attended Webinar sessions or courses last year, what have you done with the information you learned? Have you actually implemented any of the subject matter? Too often, we take a course with good intentions but never finish or, or even if we do, fail to put it into practice. Maybe we don t need it that day or maybe we re too busy. There are always plenty of reasons. When that happens, 90 percent of the time or more, that information is never used. When you do need it, you have a vague memory but probably can t find your notes or course materials. If this is the case, you wasted most of that time and money you invested. So how can you insure that you actually implement what you learned and get a return on your investment? Here are some suggestions: 1. Set an intention: Before you take a course, think about what your intentions or goals are for this material. If you can t come up with one, this may not be the course to take at least at this time. Being clear, however, will help you focus on what you need right now. 2. Take notes: Even if you receive an outline, take notes. Looking back at a later date, you may not remember what was meant otherwise. I recommend transcribing them onto the computer the next day. That not only reinforces what you learned, but makes sure you can read your writing! 3. List one to three action steps: At the end of the course, and before you leave or put your materials away, commit to one to three action steps. These should be doable, baby steps. If your step is too broad, you won t do it. For example: Your goal is to get your first Workamper position for summer That is an excellent goal but not an action step. Your first step could be to read through Workamper News and make a list of five potential employers. 4. Schedule your action steps: Use a calendar, Firefox reminder, cell phone app or some tool to schedule a time to complete your step(s). If you have a friend or spouse who also took the course, agree to be accountability buddies. Let your partner know what step you are taking and agree to check in when it is completed. If your partner does not get back to you on his/her step, call or a reminder. 5. Celebrate! Once you have completed even one step, celebrate in some way. Share the news with your spouse or accountability partner or take a fun break. Rewarding yourself helps motivate Fellow Workampers and Dreamers If you attended one of the Rendezvous, you probably met dozens of other Workampers and Dreamers and exchanged contact information. Have you had contact with them since? It takes just a minute or two to send an saying you enjoyed meeting them and hope to see them down the road. If you meet a Workamper in person or on the forums and they help you by giving you information, advice or a job tip, a thank you along with information about where or how you met and what you discussed goes a long ways. Sending a note reinforces your name and meeting. If an employer contacts them to ask about you, they will be able to say something positive about you instead of Who? If you need help again, they ll be happy to assist rather than see you as only a taker, or worse, totally forgotten who you are. Follow up with employers Another big area where follow up can be key to success is with employers. In the job-seeking process there are many opportunities to follow up after sending your resume. Did they receive your resume? Send a thank you after your interview. Sometimes you can also call to find out where they are in the process and when they expect to make a decision. After you have an offer, let them know your decision. Keep in touch periodically after you have the job to make sure things haven t changed. Workampers who follow up show professionalism and a desire for the job. A strong desire expressed as enthusiasm and keeping in touch can win out over a superior resume! Cost of inaction Besides losing value, your time and money, the downside of not following up is stress. When you have made a commitment to yourself to take a class, some part of you expects to get your money s worth. You know you need to implement what you learned. So like any procrastination, you have this nagging feeling of incompleteness. Plus, you have made a promise to yourself you did not keep. That too can eat away at you. If you let an opportunity to develop a contact slip away by failing to put time into the relationship, you may later have regrets because they had information that you could now use. Or, they have changed their and you cannot reach them. And, by not following up with employers, you could be letting jobs slip away and not even realize how close you were. You may not like checking to see if they got your resume, thinking they should tell you that, but contacting an employer gives you an opportunity to sell yourself and find out more. It s an opportunity that shouldn t be wasted. Successful Workampers take full advantage of the chance to learn and to meet fellow Workampers. They know that is just the first step and that it takes action to get a payoff. WORKAMPER NEWS JANUARY/FEBRUARY

8 Workamper News by Steve Anderson Workamper News President & Director of Possibilities It all started in 1990, when I was the Human Resource Director for Adventureland Amusement Park in Altoona, Iowa. One morning a lady by the name of Jan knocked on my door and asked if I would consider trading work hours in the amusement park for a campsite in our campground. That was how I was introduced to the concept of Workamping. What a novel idea, and one that had never been considered as a staffing resource until that time at Adventureland Park. Jan also introduced me to a newsletter called Workamper News that was being published by Greg & Debbie Robus in Heber Springs, Arkansas. This newsletter was the first resource that I utilized to start building and marketing the Workamper program that Adventureland Park operates now 22 years later. Over the years, the corporate staff and especially the ownership of Adventureland, realized the benefits of hiring Workampers more and more. So I continued to ask Greg & Debbie for additional resources and ideas to expand the recruiting. They developed programs to assist me and other Employers, thus growing the newsletter into a magazine-sized publication. Zoom ahead to the early 2000 s with the growth of the Internet moving forward at a feverish pace, I found myself asking Greg & Debbie for a resume system to utilize as another resource for locating potential Workampers for Adventureland Park. Greg invited me to begin working on a part-time consulting basis and assist in the development of what is now called Awesome Applicants. The online resume system provides WorkamperPlus and higher members the ability to post their resume to an online database. This database provides a connection to Employers who are seeking to hire Workampers. Today there are many Employers who utilize nothing but the resume system for their recruiting needs. In January of 2003, due to my encouragement, Workamper News produced the first Workamper News Job Fairs in three southern locations. Adventureland s program was still in need of more Workampers and this required reaching out in a number of ways. This experience also provided my wife, Kathy Jo, and I with our first RVing experience in a rented Class A Winnebago. We traveled with Greg & Debbie in our RVs and participated in three different Job Fairs that year. Through the experience of building the Workamper program at Adventureland Park, I was learning and growing my entrepreneurial spirit along side of the park job. Kathy Jo and I owned a small, self-serve laundromat operation called Scrub Your Duds that provided the small business training ground for ten years, along with my new experiences of recruiting Workampers. In January of 2005, Kathy Jo and I in conjunction with Workamper News, produced a small Job Fair at a local RV dealership in Quartzsite, Arizona at the same time as the RV Show in the big tent. This event injected me with a desire to further assist Greg & Debbie to expand the services of Workamper News. We navigated the (borrowed) Endeavor motorhome to Heber Springs, AR on our way back to Iowa that January. It was that visit, a one night visit, that would change our lives forever! Greg & Debbie had built Workamper News over a period of 18 years from a cottage business started at their kitchen table. They were ready for a change and believed that Kathy Jo and I were the ones to take their business to the next level. Sitting in the motorhome in the parking lot of the Workamper News office that evening, Greg presented their thoughts of selling the business to us. Even though we had experienced the entrepreneurial spirit through our laundromat business, it had always been buffered by the consistent paycheck from an employer. I had never been in a position where I would be totally responsible for developing my own paycheck and the paychecks of others. What we did not realize at the time - God had Workamper News in his plan for the Andersons. Wow! My entrepreneurial spirit was tested and developed during this time. The doors continued to open providing the opportunity, in the fall of 2005, to purchase Workamper News and to make Heber Springs our home. I must add here that Kathy Jo was leaving Adventureland Park after nearly 32 years and I after 24 years. This was a huge step of faith for both of us! Things in our lives continued to line up and what seemed impossible in the natural became reality. During this time our daughter Jody was a junior at Grand View College in Des Moines, IA. She was a Graphic Journalism major who had loved working on the high school newspaper staff and took that passion to college with her. 9 school and neither did we - until Jody was hired as our Graphic Designer and joined the Workamper News staff after graduation in the spring of It has been an awesome experience for us to see Jody mature in the business and as a young business woman. Jody is now the Editor of Workamper News and is accomplishing things that she would not have dreamed about just a few short years ago. In the summer of 2009, more doors were being opened that would bring Luke Duquette into our lives. Over the course of months, Luke eventually moved from Iowa to Arkansas to marry Jody in September of Even though Luke moved to Arkansas with his job working for the John Deere Corporation, he soon developed an interest in Workamper News. He joined the staff in 2010 providing much needed computer design and programming support. You may be wondering where I am headed with this story? Over the years I have shared this story with many during presentations at Rendezvous events, webinars and private conversations. This is the first time to share it in print. I felt it was time to share it more publically as we are working to develop the entrepreneurial spirit through our Workamper Small Business program and now our Concierge program. Each time I tell the story I feel like I am sharing a Cinderella story. Things have happened and developed that I can t claim responsibility for other than being open and willing to change and to step out of my comfort zone. I firmly believe that everyone has an entrepreneurial spirit, to some degree. You have an inner desire to build something of your own, and because of your efforts it comes to life. I firmly believe the entrepreneurial spirit is more alive today than ever and Workamping provides a perfect lifestyle for its development. My goal in sharing my story along with providing some history of Workamper News was to share an illustration of how you can take an idea and meld it into something. When you begin to take steps to move out of your comfort zone, you too can see doors open and opportunities be provided unto you that you can t possibly even envision at this point. One of my mentors states that Life begins just outside your comfort zone! I have found this to be so true. In order for this to happen you must be willing to take some chances. To address your fears and begin with baby steps at first, and walk before you run. I will NOT tell you it is easy and that it doesn t take much work. Anything worthwhile in life requires your effort. If it is handed to you, you won t appreciate it as much as compared to building it and seeing it come to life. This is the spirit of an Entrepreneur! My family and I are living examples of what the Entrepreneurial spirit can provide you. I have been blessed to be able to lead and inspire my daughter and son-in-law to develop their spirits and to strive to grow and build for their futures. It is my hope to do the same for you as you live the Workamping lifestyle and experience America from your RV. Be open to possibilities for your future. Take time to investigate opportunities that stimulate your interest and evaluate what if you might be able to take it and meld it into something you would enjoy doing and could develop a passion around. 32 Businesses on the road require a dream, particular skills, and the identification of a niche for a service or product. Imagination, creativity, and a heavy dose of persistence also help. Those characteristics fueled truck driving instructor Dick Reed when he started RV Driving School back in A seasoned RVer himself, he saw a need to teach other RVers how to safely drive their rigs. Dick opened his school and served thousands of satisfied customers from over 48 states before retiring and selling his business in 2007 to one of his trainers, Dennis Hill. Gary Lewis followed a slightly different path for his start-up business, RV Basic Training. Yet, he maintains the same end goal as Dick Reed: To help others safely and comfortably navigate a large rig on the highway. He and his wife, Barbara, sold a business, purchased a Class A motorhome, and determined to spend retirement as nomads. However, after his first trip, Gary discovered that driving an RV is different from driving other vehicles. He enrolled in a bus driving school and obtained his CDL license and air brake certification. The idea of a business still had not formed, but Gary said, What a difference in my comfort level after I knew what I was doing when I drove my motor coach. While traveling in 2002 over Canada and the lower 48 states, Gary took a job delivering Fleetwood/Intel coaches to numerous new owners across the country. These new drivers picked his brain with questions: How do air brakes work? How do you make turns in a large vehicle? How do you adjust mirrors? How do you keep this big vehicle centered between the lines on the highway? He identified a need common to almost every new owner of an RV basic training in navigating a motorhome or towing a trailer. He put together a one-day course covering all aspects of safe driving that commercial drivers must know and applying that knowledge to what every RV driver should know. In late 2005, he launched RV Basic Training. Like Gary Lewis, Dennis Hill transported new RVs for three years before he signed on as a driving instructor for the Dick Reed RV Driving School. Dennis spent time at different locations, including the Life On Wheels RV Conference, giving lessons to less experienced drivers. Retired from the U. S. Marine Corps, Dennis had ended his 21 years of service in Virginia. First, he returned to college setting a goal for a four-year degree. In order to stay in the area while their two Koreanadopted children finished high school, he worked at a number of jobs from driving a truck to working in a jail. Dennis admits he loves to drive and he accrued approximately 200,000 miles of driving while working for 32 WORKAMPER NEWS JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012

33 Horizon Transport Company. While he was on the road delivering RVs, Carol (his wife) worked in a campground s tree nursery. She spent her spare time line dancing. Jokingly, Dennis calls her the Line Dance Queen and says his primary job is driving her to line dancing conferences. However, Carol is quite capable of driving herself. When the Hills present seminars and driving demonstrations for the RV Boot Camp at Escapades, Carol backs their 40-foot motorhome into a 45-degree angled parking space. Dennis gives hand signals while Escapee members look on. The Hills were experienced RVers for more than three decades before they began full-timing. In his military career, Dennis typically had 30 annual days off. The family spent vacations traveling in various types of rigs. Every time we went out, especially after our son and daughter grew up, we didn t want to return home, Carol said. All that time, they thought about full-timing, saying, if this happens, and this happens, and this happens Eventually, they found themselves living in a large house with a 21-yearold son who was ready to move out on his own. Dennis said: Selling the house remained the single if only. We went into zoom mode, had garage sales and sold the house. In 2000, we moved into our RV and headed for Alaska. They have traveled to our northern-most state three more times, promoting their RV Driving School in recent years. Dennis Hill and Gary Lewis each capitalize on the Internet for their business, giving access to customers round the clock. Potential clients look at our web page, and then us for information, Dennis said. When I know the dates a person wants lessons, I contact one of my instructors near the client s location and ask if he is available. Then I send the client a confirmation . Often, I never actually speak to someone registering for lessons. Gary said, Our website, www. rvbasictraining.com, is our office on the road. A customer can send us an , order a manual, or make a reservation for my Mini RV Boot Camp (different from the Boot Camp affiliated with Escapees.) Their message goes directly to my Smart phone and we can seamlessly deal with it. There is no such thing as being out of the office. He explained that his wife, Barbara, is the control person, working in the background to make sure the i s are dotted and the t s are crossed. My job is new business development, sales and training, Gary said. Both businesses employ experienced trainers to teach the driving skills, thus, creating additional Workamper jobs. Presently Gary has eight experienced trainers around the United States, and hopes to increase his number to 20 by the end of Dennis has ten instructors who accept clients on their particular schedules. My instructors consider their jobs as part-time and most say their earnings are fun money, Dennis said. In fact, RV Driving School is a part-time business. We ve never taken money out of the business to support our lifestyle. It doesn t buy the motorhomes we ve had. The business pays our expenses puts fuel in the tank and tires on the wheels. And it s fun. Our trainers receive a percentage of the billing and the company is responsible for producing the driving manuals, advertising, and the cost of the website. In addition to instructing drivers of motorhomes and trucks towing trailers, Gary and his trainers conduct classes for mobile clinic drivers. Our customer base includes universities, counties, corporations, and community health centers, he said. Recently we trained five drivers for a new mobile dental clinic in Hagerstown, Maryland. We also have a program going on at Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center to train 12 Breathmobile drivers. (The Breathmobile is a 33-foot Winnebago van equipped to function as a mobile asthma clinic.) Our customers come from dealer referrals, Internet inquiries, and recommendations from satisfied customers. Each school covers a pretrip inspection of the RV, mirror adjustments, right and left turns, stopping and following distances, backing, and judging how far the tail of the vehicle swings into another lane when turning. Dennis puts his clients at ease when he says: You already know how to drive. But you would drive a Volkswagen differently from a Cadillac. That s what we do teach you how to drive a motorhome differently. He goes on to say that individual lessons are a good investment, generally costing less than an insurance deductible. Most accidents in motorhome occur in campgrounds or at fuel stops, Dennis said. We try to teach our drivers to avoid those mishaps. In my seminars, the one thing I stress is slow. Going slowly into a fuel center or backing into a campground space can cut down on these accidents. Dennis is well known for his exaggerated insistence that we are driving recreational vehicles, emphasizing the recreational. Hey, I m retired, he said. If it s not fun, I m not doing it! His humor and friendly style have endeared him to numerous seminar attendees. Both RV Driving School and RV Basic Training provide their graduates with a certificate of completion and proficiency. Gary sends his clients back on the highways with the Motor Home Driving Course Manual, a review of the material covered in the lessons. The manual is also available on his website. Dennis says that Dick Reed wanted to sell his RV Driving School to an instructor someone like Dennis who would manage the business as carefully as he had. Now in its 20 th year of operation, the Hills determined they would follow Dick s lead and sell the school to George and Valerie Mayleben, who plan to continue the high standards set by Dick and Dennis. George Mayleben has been teaching and instructing people on the safe operation of vehicles for over twenty years. He brings his knowledge and skills to the school and expects that the tradition of quality instruction and behind the wheel teaching will continue. George and Valerie have been full-timers for five years and George has been a respected instructor for Dennis Hill for four years. Now, the RVing population needs only so many driving and training schools. Before today, I was just known as No. 19, but now, I have a home and a family! I didn t get to go home right away because my new family was in Heber Springs for something called the Workamper Rendezvous. They had meetings and dinners to go to so I stayed at the hotel watching a little TV and dreaming of what my new home and job would be like. You know, this adoption thing is a little scary. What is my job going to be, will they really like me, keep me and take me places? Will the rest of the family like me? I hear them talking about a granddaughter that likes little piggies and might try and keep me all to herself! That would be okay with me! We headed out to my new home on Friday. I had to ride in my box, which was okay; it s a new, big scary world out there and my box was cozy and safe. On the way, we stopped in Bowling Green to visit some family. I was excited! BUT, I was left in my box all night and did not get to meet anyone there. I was beginning to think this adoption thing was not so good. Maybe all they cared about was the job I would be doing later. Humph! NOT GOOD. They packed up on Saturday morning and we hit the road again. At least they remembered I was there and did look in and pet me. Okay, so now I am getting curious about the world outside my cozy place, and try as I may, I could not get out of the box! This was really disappointing!! I want to look out the window! I want to see! Once again, they stopped somewhere, for lunch, I think, and guess what! There I sat all alone in my box. This sure is a long, lonely trip This time we stopped in Elizabethtown, TN, to visit more family for a bit. I didn t want to get out this time. It was a farm with dogs and horses and the smells scared me. We didn t stay long; just long enough for coffee or something. Then off we went. It was getting dark and cold outside so the new dad decided we should all stop at a hotel for the night. They did leave me in the truck, but made sure I was covered up with a warm blanket. On the road, again! Up and down we went. I guess the mom heard me grunting and complaining in the back cuz when they stopped again, I got to get out. I mean really out, not just out of the box, but out of the truck. And for what? The dad showed me what my job would be but said it would be a few more months before I would have to go to work. After checking on things there, I got to go home and meet the rest of in the family. The second one is of him spotting his home. The third is of him at his home sweet home. Presently he is at Sharp RV Park in St. Joseph, Missouri before he heads south for the winter. 43 From the More followup to the article in the Sept/Oct 2011 issue: Our resort right now is Nathan Bedford State Park, Camden, TN. We are the ONLY ones here, and full hookups. There is no camp host, nobody else just us. With my discount the fee is $10 a day. We are paid up till Tuesday and I am going to pay for Wednesday. Snow and rain on Tuesday and we are not driving in it. Nope. We have seen deer everyday and even got woke up by a hoot owl 4:30 am on Friday morning. The coffee was started early that day. Saturday I thought I would get some extra sleep, no I do not think so! Cheryl Ann could not sleep and started working for her doctors in her RV office at 1:30 am. I got up to make coffee at 6:30 cause something woke me up. You have been up how LONG?! She woke up and thought it was 7 and started working. Did not realize the time until she tried to call a lab and looked at the time. Boy, does she love what she does! My cute wife! Later on Saturday morning we went to Paris, TN. Nice, little big town. Went to the local post office first to check the mail. Next we parked the truck on the other side of the courthouse and got in line to have our picture with Santa. What a Hoot!! We even got some Musketeers bars because we were SSOOO good! Asked the cute little high school girl Elf a good place to eat. Rachel the ELF said try out the Jacks Java Joint across the street. The mother of the gal that plays the president on the 24 show owns the place. Off we go. Nice place, Latté stand inside, pottery studio, lots of Christmas stuff. Everything made in China, we walked out. Around the corner to the Come Back Cafe. Nice place, lot of Elvis and Roy Rogers pictures. Amanda Panda was our waitress. Great kid in her 20s. Brought us pulled pork BBQ, the best BBQ beans I have ever had, their great version of mayo slaw and hush puppies. Yummy. She said she loved working there. Manda worked 3 jobs and her husband works at UPS, 1 little boy, and she has just finished dental assistant school. We said we drove here to visit Paris and she said we have to see Paris on the Square! Off we walked, or should I say, I held the the hand of my gorgeous wife and I hobbled with her. My boots, spurs, and Texas hat. Wonderful place right next to the coffee shop. And everything she has is USA made and good stuff. I took some pics and sat outside and watched the traffic and the Elves. The Elves were in the Santa Cabin trying to keep warm. Cheryl Ann sauntered out with a cute Paris bag, a coffee cup and a great smile. We are going to Paris, France in Got to see all the USA Paris Places before that. She got directions to the Eiffel tower and off we go. Past Sonic, left at Lowes, right at the park and there it is. A 60 foot tall Eiffel tower and my cute wife. What a great day.
