Item Bring Notes 4 seasons Sleeping bag These are extremely expensive to buy! Fortunately, our travel company provided these. Some companies may have a rental fee but it s necessary. Duffel or Rucksack bag We used 2 duffels. Make sure wheelie-bags since these will be hauled up the mountain on your porter's back and the frame and wheels make it difficult Daypack liter should suffice and as lightweight as possible, preferably with a ton of pockets Down Jacket We bought 650-fill ones that worked for most of the trip but due to the record low temperatures we encountered, we also had Arctic expedition level jackets the company let us use. Shade hat or baseball cap I put a '' here since we didn t use ours but if the weather was warmer I am sure we would have Warm wool or synthetic hat Typical beanie that can cover your ears Balaclava/Buff Balaclavas aren t common anymore, we came with 2 Buffs per person, a lightweight and a heavyweight for each and they were used daily Glacier glasses This is a must for sure. One day I forgot to put mine on and ended up getting a massive headache. The sun is very strong at this elevation. 100% UV protection with side shields and a hard-sided storage case Headlamp Never needed a light until the last night at Gorak Shep and at that point we used either a flashlight or the flashlight in the cellphone Ear-muffs A buff or hat that covers your ears will do the trick just fine Neck warmer see balaclava 1 pair liner gloves Although you may think 'I can just wear rmal gloves, I've never needed liners before' we used these ALL the time. During the day, instead of bulky gloves, and to sleep in. Thin wool or synthetic 1 pair shell gloves or mitts You will need these in addition to the liners once you get closer to Base Camp. Gore-Tex is preferred Instant hand warmers Once again, due to the record cold we encountered these were nice to have at night as we were trying to fall asleep. T-shirts Really, 3 is eugh. I read one person who recommended only 2 but 3 is ideal since you will get pretty funky
Light & expedition weight thermal tops Fleece jacket or pullover or Wind-Stopper jacket Most thermal tops come in light, medium, and heavy (expedition) for this I would recommend looking at what the temps are supposed to be while you are there and buy accordingly. We would have been good with medium and heavy but instead I ended up layering my lights and mediums together. Used almost daily. Once you are moving and the sun comes out our down jackets were too warm but we still needed something on top of the shirts. Also, was nice to layer at night Waterproof shell jacket At least we didn t need them but would still take in case of rain. Preferably breathable fabric and small eugh to fit in a pocket 2 women sports bras My advice is to wear these around before you go. I tried mine on and assumed they fit fine. Despite fitting, once I started trekking and moving, one of them was very uncomfortable. Synthetic, cotton 2 pairs nylon hiking shorts Once again pay attention to the forecast. If you are uncertain leave them behind and just get trekking pants that zip off into shorts. Quick drying type, t cotton 4-5 Underwear I brought more like 6 pairs. IT IS CRITICAL THAT THESE BE BREATHABLE SYNTHETIC FABRIC. 2 pairs lightweight long underwear Just like the thermal tops, buy light, medium or heavy based on what temps you will be. Capilene or other synthetic 1 pair soft shell pants These are super expensive and I honestly have clue when I was supposed to wear them. I never took the tags off so they will be returned to the store w that we are home. The list I had found said to get synthetic, full zip from top and bottom preferable 2 pairs trekking pants 2 was sufficient although 3 may have been better but that would have taken up more room. I wore the same pair every day to hike in and then changed into the other for dinner and lounging around. I'm sure the hiking pair stunk but I wanted to keep one "good" pair instead of 2 stinky ones. Preferably that zip on/off at the knees so they double as shorts 1 pair hard shell pants hard-shell = sw pants or swboard pants. For us this was a must the last 2 days since it was brutally cold. Waterproof / breathable, Gore-Tex or
1 pair cotton pants (jeans or khakis) equivalent is best. Should zip from the top and bottom See my comment about trekking pants. The only jeans we brought were what we traveled in and we left those behind in Kathmandu at the hotel. waterproof stuff sacks I didn t get a stuff sack or any sort of boat equipment, instead I bought waterproof packing cubes. Packing cubes are the greatest invention ever any way so this was killing 2 birds with one stone. You could also get large puncture resistant plastic bags to keep clothes dry called Dry Bags 4 pairs of liner socks We brought 2 lightweight and 2 a bit heavier with us. Synthetic or Capilene 2 pairs heavy weight socks Smartwool or similar to be worn over liner socks 2 pair light weight socks Smartwool or similar to be worn over liner socks 1 pair hiking/trekking boots Do t skimp on these!! Your entire trip and experience relies on your feet getting you from point A to point B over various terrain. Light to medium weight water proof, Ensure a good fit with layered socks 1 pair light trekking shoes or sneakers Ather item we left behind in Kathmandu. I was told to bring these for around the lodges but a pair of slippers or even flip-flops will do and much less room to pack. Sneakers on many sections of the trail is just asking for a twisted ankle!! 1 pair hiking gaiters maybe We bought these in Namche on the way since we heard it was pretty wet ahead of us but never used them. We saw other trekkers who had them on the whole time so whatever 1 pair sandals Purchased but left at home due to lack of room in our luggage 2 bandanas No clue why I would need these Down booties I had already owned these from my days in Wisconsin. When I asked Chaz if he wanted me to order him some, he laughed and declined. Well, numerous times at the teahouses he would borrow mine and comment that he wished he would have had his own pair. Extra shoelaces Didn t need but once again better safe than sorry 1 pair adjustable trekking poles These were a god send! Due to the fact that we were going carry-on only (apparently TSA thinks I can use them as a weapon) we bought these once we arrived
for about $10USD. In the US, these tend to run $150 or more. Durable wallet / pouch We brought 1 for each of us but still only used our rmal wallet. Granted, I kept all travel documents in an envelope style pouch that I use on all of our trips Wrist Watch They said to have for an alarm but we used our phones Bungie cords Used for dying clothes in our room at night Carabiners (climbing clips) Allows you to attach items to your day pack for quick access Pocket knife or small Swiss Army First of all, your guide will carry tools and things like this. Second, the airlines will take it if it s in carry-on luggage Padlock Suggested for locking the bedroom door but all the teahouses we stayed in had perfectly fine locks Paperback books, cards, mp3 player maybe Had the temperature been a bit more pleasant we would have been more comfortable lounging about reading instead of hibernating for warmth. Biculars Ended up leaving at home due to lack of room. 1 point & shoot camera or 1 large SLR Never missed them. What a "No" here?!?! Correct. We had our DSLR and my Fuji weather proof and hardly used them. We stuck to iphone cameras only. The big DSLR became such a burden to try to use and a heavy weight to carry, Chaz threatened to throw it off the mountain numerous times. Plus, we all kw how amazing the cameras built into phones can be. Favorite snack foods Mainly Snickers bars. To be consumed for quick energy on the trail Tang maybe Brought but ended up gifting to our guide. I say bring if plain water bores you. Metal Water Bottle We only used it to fill with boiling water and snuggle up with at night Hydration bladder/camelbak Pee bottle/men & pee funnel/women Essential This is all we used for water. Tucked nicely into our daypacks and the straw was right there to get a drink at any time as we were trekking Brought, never used. On the trail, I would think it would be more of an obstacle than just plain squatting. Perhaps I should have used mine for all the sketchy toilets I encountered
1 small stainless steel thermos Water purification - Iodine tablets Deemed unnecessary from the start Worked great just be sure to read the instructions. Ours was one tablet per liter, 30 minute wait. We also brought a UV purifier wand but never used it. That will also be going back to the store. ipod / ear plugs maybe I didn t use them but the teahouses are t insulated meaning you can hear everything - sring and coughing neighbors, barking dogs, etc. Duct tape Didn t need and I figured our guide probably had some too but if you bring some a small roll will suffice Sewing kit In your mind, it makes sense to have but your guide should be equipped to handle anything that would need this. (or use duct tape) Quick dry towel maybe Didn t need but some might Cigarette lighter No clue why I would need it w that I have gone, plus the airport in Kathmandu took it before our Lukla flight Notebook I say to journal your trip because once at home it s nice to look back as its unlikely you will remember it all without one Torch with batteries maybe torch = flashlight. We brought 1 for each of us. You only really need 1 per couple and even then, you can use your phone if need be Power adapters Make sure you have the right adapter and converter. The teahouses charge you to recharge your devices so we brought a long-lasting power pack and paid to have that charged and then used that to charge all our other devices Silk sleeping bag liner maybe These are pricey and we never used them. Other articles I read said they protect from who-kwswhat since these are the company's sleeping bags, but ours looked fine, smelled fine and besides, we slept in so much clothing, thing was touching us anyway Toilet paper Yes, you have to bring your own, if you run out, most teahouses sell it. I brought the travel size Kleenex packs and ended buying a roll along the way too Toiletry kit Don t take your rmal items. You don t need makeup, you don t need hair care items. It should be lotion, liquid hand sanitizer, soap, etc.
1 small personal sized firstaid kit We ended up using the scissors and the ace bandage that came with it. Make sure it comes with blister treatments 1 Lip balm At least SPF 20, cord or carabiner already attached Sunscreen Don t go crazy on these, I had purchased 4 travel size ones. We barely made a dent in 1 of them and ended up gifting the rest to our guide at the end. Make sure at least SPF 40. The day of Base Camp we both forgot to apply and Chaz had a lovely blistered se to show for it Chaffing balm/baby powder Didn t need but should definitely bring in case Baby wipes Make that a 'hell '! There aren't any showers along the way (some teahouses advertise them but they cost money and it s still hit or miss since they are solar powered), baby wipes will become your daily shower. We bought one large pack and it was eugh for both of us to share Extra passport photos You will need these for your entry visa in Nepal and also at the registration checkpoint on the trek. 4 copies Airline ticket Obviously. Make a copy and leave on at your guide's office in KTM First-Aid items We brought all of the below items because I am of the 'better safe than sorry' mentality so I will tell you if we ended up using them and you can decide Pain killer I am allergic to anything with aspirin so I brought Tylel for me and took daily for mild aches Eye drops for burning e Didn t use Multivitamin pills I always take one so brought with Muscle relaxant Somehow we weren't very sore although we expected we would be. Didn t need Vicks vapor Used with my cough at night Neosporin ointment Didn t use but didn t get cut either Band aid Didn t use but didn t need. Antihistamine Didn t need Thermometer maybe I ended up getting sick and the hospital had asked me if I had a fever. Funny thing was I had this with me, just forgot about it Ibuprofen Chaz took almost daily similar to my Tylel use for general aches and pains
Extra Strength Excedrin Chaz stuck to his Ibuprofen for his altitude related headaches but brought this with too Imodium or Pepto bismol Get chewable. Chaz used these since he had a bad reaction to mac 'n' cheese on the trek and food poisoning the last night in Kathmandu Diamox for altitude sickness Although you may t use it, better safe than sorry. This is an Rx so make that appointment with your doctor ahead of time. My doctor told me to take the whole time but our guide said only if needed and that it takes 12 hours to work. Down side - it makes you pee which can be a bother as you are trying to hike.
