1 The of Flammable & s, Solids and Gases FIRE CONTROL AREAS REGULATIONS The storage of flammable and combustible liquids, solids and gases are regulated by local, state and federal fire and safety regulations. The Massachusetts Building Code 8 th Edition and 527 CMR 1:00 Chapter 60 - Massachusetts Board of Fire Prevention Regulations, which regulates the storage of flammable and combustible materials are based on occupancies, specific locations inside a building, fire protection systems and designs, and on the chemical and physical properties of the materials. 780 CMR 8 th Edition - Chapter 3:00 - Use and Occupancy ifications Table 307.7(1) 780 CMR 8 th Edition Chapter Special Detailed Requirements Based on Use and Occupancy Table Flammable liquids are classified as I liquids. I liquids are divided into three classes as follows: IA shall include liquids having flashpoints below 73 deg. F. (22.8 deg. C.) and having a boiling point below 100 deg. F. (37.8 deg. C.). IB shall include liquids having flashpoints below 73 deg. F. (22.8 deg. C.) and having a boiling point at or above 100 deg. F. (37.8 deg. C.). IC shall include liquids having flashpoints at or above 73 deg. F. (22.8 deg. C.) and below 100 deg. F. (37.8 deg. C.). Revision Date: 10/16/2017 Page 1 of 7

Closed System: The use of a solid or liquid hazardous material involving a closed vessel or system that remains closed during normal operations where vapors emitted by the product are not liberated outside of the vessel or system and the product is not exposed to the atmosphere during normal operations; and all uses of compressed gases. Examples of closed systems for solids and liquids include product conveyed through a piping system into a closed vessel, system or piece of equipment. Restrictions: The head of the fire department may limit the quantity of flammable or combustible liquids, flammable solids or flammable gases that may be kept, stored, manufactured or sold under the authority of the permit to less than that specified in the table, where in his opinion, conditions are such as to warrant his restricting the amount of such fluids, solids or gases.
