2 Ironclad was born on the jobsite. In 1997, I was asked to help on a home-build. There were plumbers, masonry workers, demo-guys, electricians and construction workers everywhere. I noticed that each person had very expensive task-specific tools that they needed in order to get the job done, but also realized that none of these people were wearing gloves. Being curious, I asked the guys around the jobsite why they weren t wearing gloves and all of their answers were similar. I can t use the gloves that are available because they re too bulky. Sure they protect my hands, but they are hot, I can t feel my tools, they only come in one size and they basically get in the way of me doing my job. This blew me away. I was a hard working guy and always used motocross gloves when I worked. I grew up riding motorcycles, and the motorcycle industry has task-specific gloves. They have gloves that are designed specifically for dirt bikes, road bikes, or off-road racing. The gloves are constructed with materials like Kevlar and ballistic nylon, and they fit snug and are basically an extension of your hand. At the jobsite, I realized that there was a huge disconnect between the worker and their most important tool their hands. They needed a glove that protected their hands and helped them get the job done. It was at that moment that Ironclad was born. My concept was to build a glove that offered protection and performance, but sacrificed neither. I also wanted to create a brand that these guys could be proud to wear; a brand that would stick with them through thick and thin; and a brand that was built solely for them. These people, the Industrial Athletes, are the true heroes of our reallife world. They build the homes that we raise our families in, the cars that we drive, the schools we educate our children in, and the roads we drive. Everything that we use in our daily life, many of which we take for granted, are built by unrecognized hard-working men and women our Industrial Athletes. Ironclad pioneered this new territory developing task-specific gloves that helped each worker get the job done more safely, efficiently and effectively. But just developing task-specific gloves wasn t enough. Ironclad needed to bring new technologies, materials and innovations to these harsh working environments. 19 KING OF OIL & GAS In 2008, the oil and gas industry s Safety Committee, representing ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, and many other respected industry leaders, put out a call-to-action to the industrial supplier market asking them to solve a lingering problem in their industry hand safety. This is one last piece of PPE for the oil platform workers. Eye, head, back and feet safety had been addressed, but hand injuries were prevalent and represented 71% of all injuries in the field.
