2 Camp Cris Dobbins at Peaceful Valley Dates: Sunday, July 11 to Saturday, July 17 Camping Nights: 6 Cost $260 $50 to sign up $60 due Feb 22 $75 due March 28 $75 due April 26 Location: Camp Cris Dobbins is located at over 7,000 feet on the Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch in Elbert, Colorado. With sweeping views of Pike s Peak and the front range of the Rocky Mountains, Camp Dobbins is about two hours from Arvada. 3 Physical Exam & Health Requirements Scouts participating in camp programs must have a completed Colorado BSA Health Form. The medical form-is a complete health history that requires a physician's signature indicating that the youth or adult is fit to attend the event. If your family does not have health insurance please contact Dr. Bob Bucknam to get a camp physical. Medical exams for scouts and adults under age 40 are good for two years. Adults staying less than 72 hours need to fill out only the first page (items 1, 2, 3) of the medical form; all adults staying 72 hours or more at camp must fill out the entire medical form. You must use the BSA medical form in this packet and have all applicable fields filled out. Immunizations, especially tetanus, must have the correct date. Please include family health and accident insurance company information and policy number. Keep your original. Make 3 photocopies. Turn in 2 copies to the treasurer. Keep the third scouts need this form before starting the Personal Fitness merit badge and for fall Camporee. Please have all medications in the original container with the scout's name and troop number written on it. Be careful to not cover the information on the label. All medications must in their original container and will be turned in to camp staff. This is a BSA policy and we have to comply with it. It is a requirement to stay at camp. Please get your camp physical completed as soon as possible. Please turn in 2 photocopies to the troop treasurer. Page 3

4 Costs The fee of $260 covers transportation, a week at Peaceful Valley Camp Cris Dobbins, meals and most merit badges. Scouts will want spending money. We suggest scouts have $50-$75 in spending money. We suggest parents put money into envelopes, label each envelope and put it in a secure spot in the day pack. Leaders cannot manage money for the scouts. Cost breakdown: Trading Post snacks: $30 ($5 per day; less is okay) Merit badge books or supply kits: $0 - $25 Souvenirs: $20 Shotgun and rifle tickets, one dollar buys several shots: $1. Shooting costs are included during merit badge session, but scouts usually need to do extra shooting to score enough points to complete the badges. The trading post is open at various times throughout the day for merit badge supplies, souvenirs, comfort items, personal items and snacks. Mail Mail is a wonderful hug from home for the campers. Please send your scout a letter or postcard. 5 Recreational Fishing Scouts may bring fishing gear from home and fish in Silver Lake during free time. Wildlife This is not bear country. It is important to maintain a clean camp and tent because food and candy attract mini-bears, better known as squirrels, racoons, skunks, and mice. If you re lucky, you may hear coyotes singing afar off late at night or see a bat at twilight. Family Night Friday afternoon and evening is Family Visitation Time. Families are welcome to come down at 4:00 and join us for dinner and camp fire. Families are not able to stay overnight and scouts are not allowed to leave Friday night. Scuba Camp Cris Dobbins offers an optional two-hour Discover Scuba session on Thursday afternoon for an additional fee of $28. Lost and Found Lost and found items are kept in the dining hall or program areas until the end of camp. They are then brought to the camp office for scouts to review before they depart Saturday morning. All items that have not been claimed are discarded by the camp. Mark all items with scout name and troop number Scouts are not permitted to leave camp during the week. They must remain with the troop until Saturday morning. Climate The weather is characterized by shifts in temperature. Summer mornings are generally cool, ranging from 40 to 60 degrees. Afternoons may get as high as 100 degrees. The air is dry and many scouts experience dry skin and chapped lips. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Page 5

6 Adult Visitors and Helpers If you are will be a camp for just a few hours and will be eating with us, the meal costs are: Breakfast $5 Lunch $6 Dinner $7 Adults staying overnight will be charged $24 for the overnight and their meals. Please pay the troop treasurer and tell both the treasurers and Scoutmaster which days and meals you will be sharing with us. We need this information and payment by July 1. Take I-25 south to Exit 184 onto Founders Parkway near Castle Rock. Turn left at stop sign to Founders Parkway. Take Founders Parkway to traffic light (Highway 86 intersection). Turn left at stoplight onto Highway 86 and follow Highway 86 through Franktown and traffic signal at Parker Road. Continue on Highway 86 through Elizabeth until you come to Elbert Highway on your right (just before the town of Kiowa). Turn on Elbert Highway and continue through the town of Elbert. Turn into Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch at the second entrance. Camp Dobbins and Camp Dietler are on the left. The address is North Elbert Road, Box 97, Elbert, Colorado Laundry Facilities There are no laundry facilities available for campers at Peaceful Valley. High Adventure Program The High Adventure program is for scouts age 14 and older. High Adventure activities are on and off the Ranch and may include kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, and similar "adventure" activities. Participants may elect to go on an optional day excursion. This trip may include some or all of these activities in Colorado Springs: Cave of the Winds lighted walking tour, Pikes Peak, Olympic Training Center, cycling or hiking at arden of the ods. The Ranch staff and/or unit leaders, using camp or personal vehicles, will provide transportation and supervision. Standard BSA safety procedures and camp policies will be followed during all activities, including the off-ranch trip. This High Adventure program is all day, every day, so Scouts who participate in this High Adventure program will not earn merit badges. There is an additional fee of $25 for participation in the Peaceful Valley Adventure. A permission slip must be signed. Page 6

7 Health form is already turned in. Summer Camp ear Label uniform shirts (A,B,C) with scout name on the laundry tag. Label water bottle and put luggage tag on all bags, including day pack. Label any items you don t wish to lose. Sleeping gear - pack in duffle or pack Sleeping bag foam sleeping pad Small pillow or use stuff sack with clothing inside Sweat pants and shirt to sleep in Winter stocking cap Clothing - pack in duffle or pack Tip 1: pack one shirt, one shorts, one pair of socks, one pair of underwear in large ziploc to help scout have a complete outfit each morning. Tip 2: Help scout assemble all the gear. Parent can check list as scout puts it in duffle bag or pack. Scout MUST pack own gear so he knows where to find things. Extra pair of shoes or hiking boots. Sandals may be worn only in shower, not in camp. Underwear Socks (6 pairs) 2-3 pairs of shorts. Nylon is great. 3-5 t-shirts. Please bring your scout class C At least two pairs of long pants. Rain pants (optional) Long underwear (optional, but recommended) Heavy jacket or sweatshirt Belt Swim trunks for pool, rowing, canoeing, and small-boat sailing Water shoes or sandals for shower (optional). Sandals may not be worn in camp. Towel (for showering and pool) Washcloth (optional) Toiletries, including chapstick, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, comb Personal first aid kit. Include 2-4 safety pins for torn clothing Sun screen with insect repellant. SPF 30 preferred Include orthodontic appliances, if you need them. 8 Day Pack - take on the bus and keep with you all week Sack lunch with drink. Must be 100% disposable. Wear Class A uniform with neckerchief and slide on bus Remove all pins and other detachable from uniform. Leave on shoulder chevrons. Leave merit badge sash at home Wear hiking boots Wear a hat. Broad-brim is better than ball caps. Wear a wristwatch Eyeglasses and/or sunglasses Medications in original containers. Put in ziploc bag, label with name and Troop 999. Activity for bus (card games, book). No electronics games, CD player, MP3 or Ipods. Camera, film (optional) Boy Scout handbook 2 pens, 2 pencils Merit badge book for each badge you are taking Pocket knife Totin' Chip card (Paperclip the card inside scout handbook) Spiral notebook (about 20+ pages). A school left-over is perfect. Merit badge pre-requisite paperwork. Compass Whistle Raincoat or poncho Light sweatshirt Filled, sturdy 1 quart water bottle Small pillow (optional) Wallet, labeled with name and Troop 999 Spending money for snacks ($2-$5 per day), Money for craft kit merit badges Bring a roll of quarters for the phone. (Calling cards work in only one location. Coins are easier.) Prearrange days and times to call. No electronics of any kind are permitted on the bus. Page 8

11 Merit Badge Program for First Year Scouts Scout Name: Please turn this in immediately. We need to pre-register for these badges. My best friend(s) is/are: Rank: Adult t-shirt size (circle one) Small Med Large XL XXL. There are four merit badge sessions, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. All scouts will have one free period to explore the camp and participate in the many activities, such as rifle shooting, movie making and canoeing. All scouts will attend Eagle Bound. This class is run by our Scout Leadership Team under the supervision of the Scoutmaster. Scouts will complete many Second and First Class rank requirements during this class. Scouts need to take one of these two swimming classes. Please choose which one best fits the scouts s swimming ability. Swimming merit badge (Eagle-required). Need to know the overhand stroke and backstroke. Beginning Swimming lessons Please put a 1" by your first choice. Put a 2" by your second choice. Basketry & Woodcarving ($10 - $15) Two merit badges, one class.
