1 Connections CONESTOGA 2018 Bible School and Annual Church Picnic s September 2018 Vol. XXIX No. 5 Wilderness Wanderings at Night was the theme of the 2018 Conestoga Bible School with the children creating their own pillar of fire with glow sticks (photos above). This was climaxed with our annual worship service at Tel Hai Camp followed by lunch and games and fellowship! Thanks, Cindy, for coordinating this memorable weekend!

2 Conestoga s 2018 Bus Trip to the Musuem of the Bible on July 19, 2018! Fifty-two persons boarded the Elite Coach bus at 6:15 a.m. on Thursday morning, July 19, and we were on our way for a day of adventure! After the threehour-plus trip which included some refreshments, we received our tickets, and entered with anticipation wondering about this six-story Museum in downtown Washington, D.C. We discovered how close we were to the downtown when we were on the top floor looking out to see the U.S. Capitol to the right and the Monument to the left! Wow what a good view! Then, it was on to explore the Hebrew Bible Experience (walk-through stories from the Creation to the Noah s Ark to the Burning bush to the Passover including smells, darkness, smoke); Revelations of Washington (soaring in an airplane around D.C.); New Testament Theatre (breathtaking 270-degree theatre); World of Jesus (Disney-like version of the New Testament where Jesus lived); History of the Bible; Bible-themed Play Area for the children; and, of course, eating in the MANNA Restaurant. If you have a suggestion for our 2019 Annual Bus Trip, pass your ideas on to me! Neighbors meets on Tuesday mornings during the academic school year in our church fellowship hall from 9:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend this time of fellowship!

Six comfort tops were donated and the following was completed: 10 comforters and 3 sewing kits. Verna reported that the quilt donated to the Special Children s Clinic Auction brought $475.

She recited a poem entitled God Knows Best What is Best for Me and praised God for seeing her through it all! Continuing her testimony, she quoted Job 23:10 and concluded with Hebrews 6:19.

Sewing Circle met on July 11, 2018, due to July 4 being a holiday. There were 19 ladies present plus Jonathon. Six comfort tops were donated and the following was completed: 10 comforters and 3 sewing kits. Verna reported that the quilt donated to the Special Children s Clinic Auction brought $475. We sang I Owe the Lord a Morning Song for devotions and then Fern Kraybill began devotions by reviewing the events during this past year in her and Mark s lives. The special offering amounted to $40.00 intended for school kits. Sewing Circle met again on August 1, 2018, with 18 ladies present plus Jonathan. Donated items included 44 kit bags and 6 comfort tops. There were 4 comforters completed. Devotions was led by Joyce Martin who highlighted the life of Amy Carmichael, missionary to India, who lived a life of faith and self-sacrifice in the service of God. Investing my time, skills, money, and more into these organizations has helped me to bless others by doing things like improving their living conditions and repairing deteriorating or flooddamaged

The following article was written by Conestoga member Mason Stoltzfus who received a winning scholarship from Everence to attend Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va. Great job, Mason! Growing up in a Mennonite family and church community taught me from an early age that being a child of God meant that I was called to help others. Over the years, I have volunteered with organizations such as SWAP (Sharing with Appalachian people), Camp Deer Park, Mennonite Disaster Service, the Mennonite Historical Society, the Water Street Rescue Mission, and more. Investing my time, skills, money, and more into these organizations has helped me to bless others by doing things like improving their living conditions and repairing deteriorating or flooddamaged houses. I believe that investing in these ways has helped me to live out the commissioning given in 1 John 3:17, where those of us who have been blessed with resources are called to help those who are in need. 4 Conestoga Connections Last summer I spent a week working with SWAP in Harlan, Kentucky. Seeing the poverty and economic distress in Harlan has helped shape my perspective on my own life. Working in the dilapidated, rotting homes that people were living in, and seeing the lack of employment opportunities for Harlan s residents made me realize how materially blessed I am. Giving some of the resources that I have been blessed with to help others has helped me keep my priorities in perspective. Investing in other organizations and people has helped me live out my belief that all I claim to own is ultimately God s and should be used accordingly. In 2017, I was blessed with the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in several Middle Eastern countries including Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Israel, Turkey, Italy, and Greece. The trip was structured to start in Egypt and roughly follow the path of the exodus and diaspora of early Judaism and Christianity, ending in Athens and Rome, two ancient, worldly cities where Paul eventually spread the word. My time in these countries has permanently impacted my worldview, faith, and my understanding of the global church. In each of the countries I visited, I learned about a wide range of social, political, historical, religious, and biblical-archaeological topics. Some of the most impactful moments of the my semester included living with both Palestinian and Israeli host families and walking amongst ruins of landmarks referenced in scripture. After returning to the United States, I had the opportunity to work for a Christian ministry called Friendship Community where I provided inhome care for multiple individuals with developmental disabilities. Prior to working at Friendship Community, I had little experience interacting or caring for people with developmental disabilities, and the relationships and skills that I have gained from working with the individuals in the home that I am assigned to have permanently impacted me. Not only have I developed lifelong friendships with my clients and fellow workers, but I also gained skills and knowledge in the area of working with individuals with developmental disabilities that will better equip me to serve in the future as a healthcare worker.

5 2018 Youth Mission Week Conestoga youth gave a week of their summer to serve in various places locally including cleaning the Food Pantry, and working at the Mennonite Central Committee Material Resource Center, Tel Hai Camp, and Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe. Conestoga Connections 5
