2010 Camp Project Helping Two Camps in Thailand Dear Friends, Thank you once again for partnering with ministries around the world through the camp project. This year, camp participants have the opportunity to assist two camps in Thailand that seek to offer camping opportunities to the people of Thailand. In this packet you will find: o a booklet that gives details about this year s project as well as information on Thailand. Please feel free to use this information and share it at your camp in whatever setting you feel is most appropriate. o stickers you can use for your camp activities or as prizes. We hope these items will be helpful in promoting this year s project at your camp. In a separate mailing, which will be coming shortly, you will also receive other items including a DVD with video clips, posters to promote the project, and world/globe stress balls. Please note that the video clips include: o A video clip about this year s camp project in Thailand. o Testimonies from missionaries who share how God called them to be missionaries. o Video clips on ministries from different parts of the world. These clips can be used as part of a mission moment at camp or when missionaries are not available, but please feel free to use these clips in whatever setting is most effective in your camp program and activities. If you wish to see additional World Mission resources related to this project, you can go to the Covenant World Mission website at There you can download the booklet and photos as well as find links to other resources. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Patty Shepherd, at patty.shepherd@covchurch.org or at 773/ Sincerely, Patty Shepherd Advancement and Communications Associate Director Covenant World Mission, Evangelical Covenant Church Covenant World Mission website: world.mission@covchurch.org 773/

This year s camp project will go to help two camp sites in Thailand. The camps are 11 hours apart and will serve youth from North and Northeast Thailand and will also bring kids from slums in Bangkok for camp experiences. The offering will be split equally between the two sites. You can see more details about the two sites on the following pages and the plans that will be accomplished through the offerings this year. Thank you for your help to make camp available to many youth and adults in these two regions of Thailand. 4 The Covering of Grace Camp (Kai Rom Prakhun in Thai) This camp is located near Roi Et, in northeast Thailand and has been used as a camp for about 10 years now. This will be the second time that this camp has been helped by the camp project offering. The first offering helped add fill to the land to keep it from flooding, built a large pond on the site, a meeting hall and several cabins. This project will focus on completing the large sports field and water drainage system, building several more cabins, completing a badly needed upgrading of the electrical system and putting gravel on the roads in the site so it can be used in the rainy season. Budget for Roi Et Camp Electrical system $12,000 Three more cabins using wood from tress on the land $10,000 Finishing the sports field $2,000 Gravel for roads $2,000 Operation funds $5,000 Total Budget $31,000 An exciting thing has happened as the youth committee has gotten very involved in planning for the development of the camp site. In 2009, a work camp was held and over 40 young people came together to plan and work on developing the site. The Thai word for work literally means to make a party and so Thai people know how to have a good time while working too. In addition to clearing the land more and building cabins, there was worship, Bible teaching, games and a soccer tournament during the week as well as lots of good Thai food. Another annual work camp was just held the last week of March 2010 and 70 people gathered together this year to work on the camp. Youth planning for the Rom Prakhun camp site 3

Camp Amnuay Suk The second camp site, Camp Amnuay Suk, is in Northern Thailand and is just getting started. The site was donated by Anan Srisuwan in memory of her husband Amnuay to be used for ministry. Amnuay was the music director for the Covenant work in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and had a special way of relating to youth. He died from cancer in The Northern Thailand Foundation for Enbablement continues to lead the music ministry that Amnuay started with youth. This camp will be used to hold music camps that bring youth together from the different groups. Also we have been in discussion about starting a child support program for underprivileged youth and would use the site for after school activities. The offerings will help bring electricity into the site, build a sports field, cabins and a dining/meeting hall that will allow this site to be used for holding camps. If there is a chance to purchase adjoining land for approximately $5,000, some of the cabins might be substituted for the land in this project. Budget for Chiang Mai Camp Electrical system $6,000 Sports field $3,000 Dining/Meeting Hall $5,000 Operation funds $5,000 Cabins ($3000 x 4 cabins) $12,000 Total Budget $31,000 5

History of the Thailand Covenant Church The Evangelical Covenant Church first began mission work in Thailand in 1971 through missionaries Jim and Joan Gusfason. Six years later the Center for Church Planting and Church Growth in Northeast Thailand (CCPCG) was opened in the upper northeastern city of Udon Thani, with the main purpose of planting and supporting indigenous, contextualized churches among the Issaan people. Reflecting the composition of Thailand as a whole, Issaan is about 95% Buddhist and only about 0.3% evangelical Christian. Over the years, additional organizations have been formed in Udon Thani and the work has spread to other locations within Thailand. The current names, locations, and start dates are: Roi Et (1988) - Lower Isaan Foundation for Enablement (LIFE) Bangkok (1993) - Abundant Life Center (ALC) Bangkok (1993) - Thai Faith and Music Foundation (TFMF) Chiang Mai (1996) - Center for Church Enablement in North Thailand (CCENT); (2006) - Northern Thailand Foundation for Enablement (NTFE) The Thailand Covenant Church denomination (TCC) was officially formed in 1993, replacing the CCPCG, and is a member of the Evangelical Fellowship of Thailand (EFT). The TCC links together all the local churches and their supporting para-church organizations, which are staffed by Thai nationals and, in some cases, Covenant missionaries. One of the things that sets apart the Covenant work in Thailand is the commitment shown to using the local cultural forms in worship and expression of the gospel. This is not the norm as many groups adopt western forms of worship and practices that enforce the idea that Christianity if for westerners but not really for Thai people. Using Northeastern music during worship 7
Thai Game Thai people enjoy playing games. They do a version of head and shoulders, knees and toes where the leader says one thing but then tries to trick you by doing another with his actions. Those who get it wrong have to come stand up front. Once you have a pretty good size group that has gathered up front it is time to punish them. The leader makes a group of them do a silly dance or song as punishment in front of everyone else. A few people taking their punishment during a game break while working Bible Verse Thai Bible Verse for the ROM PRAKHUN CAMP comes from Romans 5:2 as it contains the name of the camp: Doy tang Praong, raw jung dai kaw nai ROM PRAKHUN ti raw yuen yu doi kwam chua Through Whom we have come UNDER THIS GRACE in which we now stand because of faith In a country in which most people believe in the power of Karma (i.e do good receive good, do bad, receive bad) understanding God s grace through faith in Jesus is key to new life in Christ. 8
