2 Tools for gardeners and florists The OTTER company was founded in around 1840 in a small Kotten a traditional grinder s watermill at the Königsmühle in Solingen. Its name comes from the indigenous otters that used to live in the riverbanks and streams in the Bergisch Land region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. 13 extras 13 Sharpening your knife with the Belgian whetstone First of all, place the stone on an even, non-slip surface and dampen with water or oil. Lay the cutting edge of the knife on the stone, and then lift the back of the blade by approx. 3 mm. This creates an angle. Holding the handle of the knife with one hand, gently press the fingertips of your other hand onto the blade to stabilise it. Now use circular movements to sharpen the blade. After approx. 10 to 20 circles, change sides. Then sharpen the other side of the blade, also using circular movements. Repeat this process until the cutting edge is sharp. Always ensure the stone is damp enough to create a paste-like consistency that will increase the sharpening effect. 14 MateRIALS 14 Materials STEEL TYPES AND HANDLE MATERIALS: CARBON STEEL C75 Beech C75 is a spring steel with a high carbon content. It is often used for knife blades that combine extreme sharp ness with high stability. It holds the edge for a long time and is easy to sharpen. Beech is a heavy European hardwood. The deciduous tree grows on flat land and low mountain ranges. A high level of hardness and robustness are what make this wood stand out. Its even, fine-grained structure and resistance to wear and tear make it ideal for knife handles. Carbon steel Carbon steel belongs to the rolled and ball bearing steel family. This tool steel has a good abrasion resistance and toughness, which makes it ideal for particularly challenging garden work. The cutting edge is simply to sharpen thanks to the fine structure of the steel. RUST-PROOF STEEL Blade steel stands out with its advanced utilitarian properties including a high level of hardness and toughness, as well as good corrosion resistance and sharpening properties. Sapeli Handle material Sapeli belongs to the mahogany family. The wood has a vibrant gold to reddish-brown colour and a very even grain structure. It is moderately hard to hard, but easy to handle and process. Handles made of Sapeli stand out with their durability and resistance. POLYVINYL CHLORIDE Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC for short, is an amorphous thermoplastic material. As a handle material, it is resistant to moisture. Garden tools with red handles in particular are easier to spot in the garden and therefore more suitable for everyday use.
