This would also be an excellent time to begin preparations for their baked beans (good baked beans bake for a long time)

4 Camp Fire Saturday Evening Campfire: There will be a campfire program Saturday evening at approximately 7:15 p.m. Troops leaving after the Campfire should break camp before going to the campfire. Please let the registration team know at check-in on Friday that you will be leaving after the campfire. This event should be over by approximately 9:15 p.m. The campfire will be in 3 parts. - Awards recognition ceremony - Wood Badge beading ceremony - Order of the Arrow Call-Out ceremony Awards Awards Ceremony The awards ceremony will take place at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the camporee campfire. All competing patrols in a troop must be present to win an award. If your patrol/troop is not present you will forfeit the award. Please do not leave early and have your troop miss out on the best part of the day. We appreciate everyone s cooperation in staying and making this a great Camporee The awards will be based on patrol participation and group involvement in all events.

5 Wood Badge We will have a Wood Badge beading ceremony during the Spring Camp-o-ree campfire. If anyone has completed their ticket and is looking for an opportunity to have their beading, please contact Ed Kosmicki at ed@cosmic-e.com if you would like to be included in this ceremony. This will be a great opportunity to let the scouts and scouters in our district see your accomplishment. Wood Badge is a training course for Scouters which finally results in their receiving a certificate, a small neckerchief, a leather slide, and two small wooden beads on a leather thong. Lord Baden- Powell, the founder of Scouting, directed the first course in 1919 and gave each of the participants one of the beads which he had captured from the African chieftain Dinizulu. Thus did the course name develop, for its symbol was literally a badge of wood. Wood Badge is, further, Scouting s premier training course. Baden-Powell designed it so that Scouters could learn, in as practical a way possible, the skills and methods of Scouting. It is first and foremost, learning by doing. The members of the course are formed into patrols and these into a troop. The entire troop lives in the out-of-doors for a week, camping, cooking their own meals, and practicing Scout skills. Order of the Arrow Order of the Arrow Call Out: The Strong River District Chapter of the Order of the Arrow will conduct a Call Out Ceremony at approximately 8:30 p.m. (after the Campfire awards and Wood Badge beading). We encourage everyone to remain to watch. Please note: If your unit has youth elected or adults selected to join the Order of the Arrow and need to be called out you must supply the names of the participants when you check in. 6 Campsite Inspections Patrol Campsite Inspection- This event will be judged on a scale of 1 to 5 in each area. 1. Patrol Flag posted 2. American Flag and Troop Flag posted (one of each for unit will count for all patrols in the unit) If a troop does not own a Troop or US flag, the troop leaders must notify the campsite inspectors and they will not be docked 3. First Aid Kit available and in plain sight 4. Cleanliness of cook area and surrounding area Food properly stored in containers off the ground. Coolers clean and off the ground. 5. Duty Rosters and Menus Must be posted and protected from the elements 6. Tents neat and put up well (outside only) 7. Easily identifiable Patrol site(s) Patrol area neat, free of trash with tents in order. 8. Ax Yard Properly roped off, ax properly stored in sheath and a first aid kit in the area 9. 7 Cooking Contest Patrol Backed Bean Cook off... This should not be caned baked beans with secret ingredients. Each patrol will need to come up with a camp baked bean recipe. Cooking baked beans from scratch will challenge the patrols cooking skills and should be a fun and learning experience. The beans can be prepared in the morning and cook while the patrols are participating in the camporee events. If beans are left cooking during the event time the fire/coals for cooking must be monitored by and adult in the campsite. The patrol leader will need to bring at least 3 servings and a copy of the recipe for judging between 5:15 and 5:45 p.m. Leaders Desert Cook off... We don t want the leaders to feel left out of the cooking contest. We encourage each troops leaders to come up with a unique camp desert. Make enough for the boys in you unit and bring at least 3 servings and the recipe for judging between 5:15 and 5:45 p.m. Medical Medical Release: We highly encourage that each Leader have a copy of all participant s (Scout and Leader) Medical Form at the Camporee in case of any unexpected emergency. The official medical form can be found at org/filestore/healthsafety/pdf/ _ab.pdf. We will not collect these forms at registration- it s your responsibility to have them available. Nearest hospital is Simpson General Hospital, 1842 Simpson Highway 149, Mendenhall, MS (aprox. 30 mins) Patrol Method Patrols are the building blocks of a Boy Scout troop. A patrol is a small group of boys who are similar in age, development, and interests. Working together as a team, patrol members share the responsibility for the patrol s success. They gain confidence by serving in positions of patrol leadership. All patrol members enjoy the friendship, sense of belonging, and achievements of the patrol and of each of its members. The patrol system is not one method in which Scouting for boys can be carried on. It is the only method. Lord Baden-Powell, Scouting s founder

8 Scoring Patrol leaders will be issued a score card before events begin. Each card must list Patrol name and Unit number. All scouts in the patrol (at camporee) must be listed and the patrol leader must be indicated. At each event the patrol leader or scribe will need to give the card to the event coordinator, Score card will be turned in when submitting the patrols backed bean sample are submitted. Scoring will be based on entire patrols participation in each event and their campsite inspections. individual event scoring to be determined by event coordinator

9 Miscellaneous Boy Scout Troop Leadership Requirements: All Troops are required to have two registered adult leaders at all times. All adults are welcome however, all adults that camp with their Scout Unit must be registered. All adults must show proof of completing Youth Protection training be prepared to show your Youth Protection cards Alcoholic Beverages Alcoholic beverages of any type will NOT be permitted on Camp premises. No Scouter or accompanying adult, registered or not, shall be under the influence of alcohol or any drugs during the Camporee at any time. Camp Dismantling Campsites may be dismantled after the before the campfire on Saturday or Sunday Morning All trash, garbage, wood etc. shall be removed from the camp sites All campsites shall be left cleaner and better than you found them. Discipline Any Scout or unit in violation of the Camporee rules or BSA policy will be subject to disqualification or point deduction Flags The American Flag, Troop or Crew Flag and Patrol Flags shall be displayed at campsite NO FLAGS shall be taken to the opening ceremony or campfire Garbage There is NO trash pickup. Each unit is responsible for their own garbage and must transport All their garbage out Knives All knives must be of the folding type. All Scouts carrying knives must have the tot n chip card with them. Any knives being used in a careless manner by a Scout will be confiscated and returned to the unit leader. Scorekeeper In all cases, the official Score Sheets will be used for Scoring. No alternate methods may be used No complaints or claims relative to a unit s score or against another unit s score may be made after the awards ceremony. Uniform Class A uniform shall be worn at all ceremonies. Class B may be worn during other events and competition.

10 Some simple guidelines When you check in, please give registration the troop number and the name of the patrols that will be competing. Here s a tip. Once you have established the names of the patrols competing, don t change them during competition on Saturday. This can greatly decrease your chance of winning if we do not know who to award the scores to. Scoring is based upon all of your scores. The better you are prepared, the better chance you have of winning. Show spirit and team work, do not argue and bicker. Don t forget your patrol flag. Show your scout spirit Being Prepared includes your 10 Essentials. The basic 10+ Essentials include: pocket knife (totin chip), personal first aid kit, sun screen, waterproof matches and fire starter, food, signal device, water, extra clothes, rain gear, compass, flashlight. Delays There may be some unavoidable delays at certain events. Please be patient and move to other shorter lines if possible. Electronic Devices Electronic or GPS devices, even if incorporated into watches, cell phones, ipods, or any other such electronics are not permitted on the competition field. If a Scout for health reasons requires an electronic device, it needs to be approved by the Camporee staff before, in advance of being at any competitive event. Loss or Damage of property is the sole responsibility of the person who brought it. Scout Spirit is an important part of Scouting and Camporee. Scouts are expected to behave according to the Scout Law at all times. Behavior inconsistent with the Scout Law will not be tolerated. Additional Bring your own water - no water outlets are available in the campsites No trash pick up - units responsible for their own trash removal Camporee Uniform The Class A and B uniform should be worn the whole weekend. The full Class A Uniform is required for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

11 Cat Holes From *200 feet (think 70 adult steps) from all water sources, trails, and camp sites *avoid areas where there is obvious water run off (drainages and such) this will drain back into your valuable water sources *look for a nice flat spot preferably or a GENTLE hillside, (pooping on an incline is no fun but sometimes you don t have a choice) *look for easy digging (avoid rocky and rooty areas if possible- this is where a true trowel will come in handy) *look for an out of the way location where others are less likely to wander So now that you found your view for your poo. You should have on hand toilet paper or some kind of natural wiping material. You should also have a trowel or a digging apparatus of some kind. Cathole Dimensions: *You want your cat hole between 6 to 8 inches deep, roughly the depth of a Nalgene Water Bottle and 4 to 6 inches in diameter. Technique: When digging your cat hole, mound the dirt up on one side of your respective hole. This will allow for an easier fill in of the cat. It is common to get excited while digging the cat and start throwing your precious soil behind you. Natural Toilet Paper Options: Everyone is different but some people swear by the natural toilet paper method, here are some options: Snow (this one is especially refreshing), leaves- your going to have to know your poison ivies/oaks/sumacs on this one (from experience big tulip poplar and mullen leaves work well and juniper tree sprigs out west), smooth river rocks, grasses and rounded, smooth bark less sticks. Some people even use water when it is plentiful. (Remember this is water from your water bottle and nowhere near your water source!) What to do with your used natural t.p.? The best practice is burying it in the cat hole as well, if it won t fit make sure it is placed somewhere inconspicous.
