1 It's Your Post 'WellBeing' Plus Middlefield Post May 25, 2016 By Carolyn Mayer I n June of 2015, I went to Europe with about 40 other people from the Burton/ Middlefield area. We went for 12 days, and we travelled to Greece and Italy. The trip was organized by Meghan Hull who is an English teacher at Berkshire High School. This was the second time that I had travelled on a tour to Europe organized by Mrs. Hull, the first time being in the summer of 2013 to England, Wales, Ireland, and France. We left on June 15 on a 10-hour overnight flight to Athens. I didn t sleep as much as I would have liked on the plane, but when we landed in Athens at about 11 a.m. and the temperature was already more than 90 degrees, I was energized to go exploring. But first, we set our luggage at our hotel that had an amazing view of the Acropolis. Our first destination was to The Plaka, which is essentially a large, outdoor shopping center. The shops were open-air, and the vendors were very nice. One vendor even shared with us is homemade wine. The next day we went to the Parthenon, which required a lot of hiking, but it was worth it. The Parthenon is cool, but what I think is cooler is the fact that I ve seen pictures of the Parthenon in every history textbook I ve ever had, and I ve learned so much about the goings-on of the city, that it was surreal to stand at such and ancient and historic landmark. The next day, we drove through the winding roads of the Greek countryside to get to Delphi where they had the most delicious honey that I have ever tasted. Our European Travel hotel was built on the side of a mountain, which overlooked acres of olive trees and vineyards; so naturally, I bought olive oil in Delphi. We learned about the history of the city, and then my friends and I walked around the city and talked to shop owners, reflecting on all the great experiences we ve had and were going to have. Delphi was one of the highlights of my trip. The day after that, we got onto an overnight ferry that took us to Italy, and then our Italian bus driver drove us to Florence, which was also wonderful. We walked down the cobblestone streets all day, and then at A city on the side of a mountain in Greece visited by Carolyn Mayer (above) and many others from the Middlefield/Burton area. European Travel Continued from Page 1 befriended the college-age employee who worked behind the desk at night, even through the language barrier. We stayed in Florence for a couple nights, and then drove to Rome. Our first destination in Rome was to the Colosseum, where we tried to imagine ourselves as one of the many spectators at a gladiator event in the blazing heat. The next day, we went into Vatican City, where I had one of the most magical experiences of my life. I stood in the silence of the Sistine Chapel, and stared at Leonardo DaVinci s masterpiece that was painted on the ceiling. I will never be able to express the feeling that I had in that room, gazing upon that artwork with my eyes tearing up from the majesty. I will never forget it. On our final days in Europe, we travelled to Capri, which is an island off of Italy. There were lemons growing on trees in Capri, so needless to say, I drank some lemonade there. We also visited Pompeii. We walked through the ancient and perfectly preserved city and town square, with Mount Vesuvius lingering ominously in the background. We could also see some of the perfectly preserved artifacts from the eruption that killed so many. It was an unforgettable way to end an unforgettable trip. 3 By Joe Novak community interest Insanity is Hereditary, You Get it From Your Spouse Some days I think my wife is trying to drive me insane; my friend says it s not a drive, just a short putt and he may be correct. Do all women get stranger (I mean that in a sympathetic, concerned way) as they age? I will state a few examples: I was driving out of Mark s in Painesville as a gaggle of geese started crossing the driveway. My wife shouts, Look out! as if some tragedy was about to strike and death was imminent. The geese were 100 feet away and I would have stopped in plenty of time, cursing those flying toilets as they crossed in front of us with little regard for my sanity. I responded with, Why do you do that? Are you trying to put me in an early grave? Well I didn t think you saw them, was her response. It was the same response she had when she warned me about the fire truck. You know, that big red thing with a million By Don Benham I had a home in Ashtabula that had a planter in the front by the garage door. There was lattice work at the end of the house by the planter. This one morning I went into the garage to get my tools and as I was opening the garage door I heard a flutter and looked up and here was a robin flying from a nest. So I decided I didn t want a mess there from the robins so I took the nest down. It had one egg in it. I preserved the nest by putting it in the garage on my table saw. The next morning as I tried to enter the garage I looked up and saw that the robin had laid another egg right where the nest had been. The egg fell at my feet so I put the nest back where it had been. The birds started to sit on that one egg and eventually a chick hatched. I was ashamed of myself for removing the nest because the robins did not make a dirty mess. The excrement from the chick is contained in what looks like a little plastic pill. The parent bird takes that away from the nest and drops it. This keeps the predators from knowing where the nest is. They continued to feed the little bird worms by stuffing it down it s gullet. Both parents fed the nestling. The nestling grew until it reached a point that the parents kicked it out of the nest. I just left the nest there and in a short while I noticed activity in the nest. They were taking the old lining My Robin Experience El Hombre Barber Shop A Modern Old-Fashioned Barber Shop Rick Seyer s hours: Monday and Tuesday 9-5:30 Becky Griffen: Wed-Friday 9-5:30; Sat. 9-1 Spidalieri s Plaza North State Ave. Middlefield (Across from the Fire Station) flashing lights and ear piercing sirens that she was certain I had not seen. Another thing she does is sneak up on me and startles the bejeebers (my nice word for something you flush) out of me, then exclaims that she had no idea I was so easily frightened. She also talks in the opposite direction two rooms away, assuming that I can understand what she is saying and who she is talking to. My reaction is just ignoring her after which she confronts me and accuses me of ignoring her which I plead innocent to; turnaround is fair play. I cook, she cleans; this has worked for 31 years of marriage, however she now puts the kitchen utensils where she wants, not where they belong. Just look around, you ll find it, she exclaims in her nonchalant way. She has a number of good qualities and that is why I keep her; along with the fact that training another one to put up with my idiosyncrasies ( idiotsyncrazies according to her) may be nearly impossible. I think I am starting to understand why the husbands usually die before their spouses. They want to! This is a statistical out of the nest and it ended up all over the concrete in front of the garage. They replaced the lining with new. I then noticed two more eggs in the nest. The next morning I was amazed to hear a fluttering and saw a dark bird fly out. I looked in the nest and there was a larger egg than that of a robins and it was brownish. It was donated by a cow bird. So I picked it up and threw it away. (The cow bird puts its egg in other birds nest and lets the other birds raise its chick.). The chick cow bird when it hatches is larger than the robin chick so it hogs most of the food. It is also known to push the other chicks out of the nest. The cow bird is lazy and lets the host bird do all the work. As I realized later the possibility of that cow bird chick was nature s way of regulating the robin population I did a little experimenting. I moved the nest down to the next slat in the lattice. The parent birds brought food up to where the nest originally was even though the nest itself was moved down 18 inches. It didn t feed the babies so after ten minutes I put the nest back. The parents then returned and fed the babies. (Chicks need to be fed every ten minutes.) Those chicks grew to maturity and again the nest was empty. In a few days I noticed activity again in the nest as they relined the nest. Once more they raised three chicks. I was not able to tell which birds were male and female but they became accustom to me and I could even touch the nest while one of them was sitting on the eggs. It was a great education for me to watch the activities of them raising their nestlings. Even though I left the nest there the next year there was no activity. What a great experience. He quickly walked to the creek alongside our cabin. He was face down in the soggy earth more than he was on his feet as he would slip and slide in the muddy ground. Grandpa laughed so hard I thought we would have to give him CPR. As we placed the little boat in the water I asked Kyle what he would like to name the river. He proudly exclaimed, The River Blue. The name stands to this day. Was it just yesterday that we enjoyed taking Kyle and several other grandchildren with us to the cabin? I sit back, tears in my eyes and realize that many years have passed in a flash. We are so blessed for having the opportunity and the stamina to spend quality time with Kyle and his brother and cousins as they were growing up. Many times we would take all four grandchildren on a week end vacation ranging in age from three years to nine. Bed time was especially hectic as the cabin is only one room and we had to line the little guys on the floor side by side like sausages. Adding a large dog to the mix plus Grama and Grampa filled the room to capacity. Yes, it was hectic and took a lot of energy but I wouldn t trade those days for anything in the world. We had the chance to be a part of their lives and I pray they have taken away some warm wonderful memories that they can share with their children some day. My point is simple. It s important to enjoy these moments with the children in our lives because time waits for no one and before we know it, they have lives of their own. By Sharon C. Gingerich Now when we take our walks to the River Blue, everything is overgrown with weeds and the water doesn t flow as it did before. However, our memories are as sharp as if it were yesterday. I wrote the original story of the River Blue 17 years ago when an eager 7 year old squealed in excitement as his boat floated down the creek. Now the happy memories remain and the stories never get old. With a lump in my throat I remember washing mud off the little guys face and hands and today I am congratulating a handsome grown up young man on his upcoming marriage. Where have the years gone? They fled by swiftly but I m so happy we took the time to pause and share those special moments with Kyle as well as with our other grandchildren. I thought my article was finished until I received a phone call from Kyle today. He simply and sweetly said I just called to say I love you. I brushed away the tears and realized more than ever that a relationship is like a transaction at the bank. You have to make a deposit to receive any interest. Kyle s phone call confirmed that our deposit of love was returned with interest and nothing feels better than that. A Tail Waggin Success Our seventh annual Tail Waggin Good Time for the Geauga Dog Shelter and Geauga K-9 Unit was held on April 29. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Totally Dogs 4-H club and their advisors for another successful event. Special thanks to our generous sponsors who underwrote our event this year making it possible for us to give approximately $5,800 to the Geauga Dog Shelter and $1,000 to the Geauga K-9 Unit. Those sponsors are Chagrin Animal Clinic, Dr. Jim Eldridge; Senator John Eklund; Mar-Bal Inc., the Balogh Family and Burton Middlefield Rotary. Home Savings Bank also helped with their volunteers and credit card assistance. West Geauga High School Art teacher, Andi Jahnke, again provided us with bowls made by her students for auction. These bowls are always a hit with the bidders. It would not have been possible without all the area business owners who contributed baskets and/or gift certificates for the silent auction. Everyone put a lot of effort and hard work into making this event a success. From the ladies who went to the businesses to gather the items before the dinner to the parents who stayed after the dinner to sweep the floors and put everything away and everyone in between. Thank you so much for all your hard work. WANTED TO BUY Standing Timber & Grade Saw Logs Stutzman Bros. Lumber

(MP Photo/Blau) By Patrick Blau An Un-hyphenated American As the renovations continue on our home here in St. Paul de Neste in France, we are spending more and more time on location to oversee the progress. Much like various American workers that we are all familiar with, at times the French worker needs to see someone in charge who is paying the bills; meaning, they seem to work better when the boss is around. Rather similar to lots of workplaces in America, isn t it? Except for the language difference, in many cases over here one could almost imagine themselves in America. Take, for example, the cosmopolitan nature of just our one little rue (street or road) here in St. Paul. Four doors down from us lives an English couple, Carl and Lizzie, who are steadily and busily renovating their own homestead. Next to them lives an elderly Italian brother and sister, Petri and Maria, whose home doesn t need much renovation because it s already in very good condition. In this house that Sarah and I are calling home now, there lives an American man and his French wife. Down the road in the other direction lives a few Spanish people, and not far from them a Belgian man keeps house. And all of them, even this particular American man in my own limited way, speak the common language of French. Some of them are really good at it. Some of them, like me, have further to go before the language of France becomes second nature. I m working on it, though. I want to, and I should want to. I live in France, so I should speak French. I can remain an American in my thoughts and identity, but I should embrace France and Frenchness because it s where I now choose to call home. No one on this small road running through our tiny village in southern France calls themselves American-French, Italian-French, English-French or Belgian- French. Not a single one of us. That particular tendency seems to belong only to Americans who live in America. Here we all live in France, we all call France home. After our respective accents give away our different countries of origin, that s as far as the differences between us go. This, sad to say, is definitely un-american. In America we love to create differences between ourselves. There are Americans who are calling themselves Irish-Americans, Afro- Americans, Mexican-Americans, Native- Americans, and more besides these that I really don t wish to advertise, simply and bluntly, because it s a goofy practice to hyphenate your nationality. That s what we re expected to do these days, though. We re told to revel in our differences, take pride in them, broadcast them to everyone whether they listen or not, even dress like we come from somewhere other than the country we were born in. How s that been working for us, America? In yesteryears we were taught in school, and we saw on Saturday morning cartoon commercials from Schoolhouse Rock, about America as a melting pot of all the different nationalities and cultures in the world. People immigrated to America to work towards personal success and took pride in the fact that they could all call themselves Americans. They didn t come to America so that they could remain different and separate from every other citizen. No one took pride in the use of a hyphen when describing their ancestry. No one thought of America as a politically correct tossed salad of different cultures and ancestries that they should celebrate and hold on to. There s no melting together or commonality going on in a tossed salad. All the ingredients may be in the same bowl and they may be forced to share the same space, but they are not becoming similar to one another in any way. This is progress, youngsters are told. It s progress to celebrate our differences and embrace them, right? It s progress to differentiate ourselves into assorted ethnic groups, to keep ourselves separated by race or nationality, because that promotes self esteem and cohesiveness. Right? Again, how s that working for us, America? Look on Youtube to find The Hyphen by John Wayne. It may help you to understand the benefit of describing America as a melting pot, instead of a bunch of mixed-up produce. It is only since I moved to France that I ve realized there is only a one sentence reply to the question about where you re from/who you are. It includes no hyphen, no lettuce, no tomato or olives or vinaigrette. As an American I believe that united we stand, hyphenated we fall. When asked where I m from, I simply say, Je suis américain, mais j habite au France maintenant. (I m an American, but I live in France now.) And that s it. That s all. Nothing more to say. We should all be able to proudly answer the question of where we are from/who we are with such a simple statement. Perhaps the late John Wayne answered it best when he said, We re Americans, and that says it all. Patrick Blau was born and raised in northeast Ohio. Until the end of 2014, he lived and worked in Burton/Middlefield along with his daughter, McKenzie and his son, Kevin, when he moved to France and married his wife, Sarah. Patrick and Sarah currently live in St. Paul de Neste, a Burton-like village in southwest France.

There will be opportunities for attendees to try their hand at many different art forms such as an instrument petting zoo (provided by Geauga Music), Tech Art which lets participants put their own robot together and create a piece of art (provided by Steven Guttierez), creating your own stuffed animals at C.M. There will be live bands playing in Chardon Square all day. Bands scheduled to perform include (but are not limited to): Shivering Timbers, Steve Madewell, and Tom Evanchuck. This year s theme revolves around Shakespearian times and reenactors from The Ohio Renaissance Festival will be interacting with families all day long. The Arts Jam will be held on and around Chardon Square June 25 from noon to 5:30 p.m. and will conclude with a 7:30 p.m. performance of Shakespeare s hilarious comedy, Twelfth Night. Members received line dance lessons from Sandy of B-Line Dancers, in Newbury. The line dancing will be performed at the Pig Roast as a thank you to attendees. Donations are a necessity of the Pig Roast, and since we did not receive as many as planned, we decided to put the donations received into one large basket, to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. the problem solvers Providing Prompt & Professional Service Since 1966 Residential & Commercial Pro-pump Bacteria High Pressure Sewer & Drain Jetting System Renovation & Repair Chlorine & Dechlorine Tablets A Full Service Septic Company You Can Trust! / Next we discussed pig tagging for the fair, as well as preparations that are needed for our other 4-H requirements.
