1 UPDATE Volume 49, Issue 08 AMA CHARTER CLUB 797 August 2017 The SANTA BARBARA RADIO CONTROL MODELERS INC. is incorporated in the State of California as Chapter 797 of the ACADEMY OF MODEL AERONAUTICS (AMA). The purpose of this club is to promote the hobby of model aviation in a safe and enjoyable manner. Regular meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at the Santa Barbara Airport Visitor s Center, 45 Hartley Place (off of Hollister at David Love Place). Everyone is welcome at our meetings. Please phone or any officer for further information. Club Meeting / BBQ 6:00 pm Thursday, August 3, 2017 Santa Barbara Airport Visitors Center 45 Hartley Place, Goleta, CA Help make the monthly meetings as interesting as possible. Contact Glenn Dorfman at gadlaw1@aol.com if you can contribute with a "show and tell", a good story, a guest speaker, building tips or disasters, etc. It will be appreciated. Fog in the morning and clearing to around 80 on the coast and 10 degrees more in the valley with of course our share of wild fires. Fortunately the dreaded sundowners have been mild and so for now, July 18, the fires are getting controlled. I was interested to see on one of the official maps of the fire lines the inclusion of Crawford Airport. The late and great airport from our perspective of course. Under the category of "save the date", we have the annual driveway bar-b-que at 6pm on Thursday, August 3 at the Airport Visitor's Center. Dale Byers, griller extraordinaire, will officiate. If you can help him out with some of the shopping or whatever, let him know. And by the way, August 3 will be day #2 of the Santa Barbara Fiesta. Therefore, I am sure that all barbeque attendees will be festooned in their most glamorous Fiesta attire. Please refer to the photo on the next page for costume suggestions. Fair warning: Those not in appropriate costume will be required to build their own tri-tip mountains and bus their own paper plates. The other date is the Goleta Valley Lemon Festival at Gersh Park on the weekend of September 16. Whatever your opinion of lemons, this event will provide another opportunity to advertise the club and our need for an air field. Tom Wolf will be out of town at the time but I believe that he will help with organizing our presence and activity at the Festival. I too will be otherwise engaged so Tom will be looking Page 1

2 for a volunteer to be the on-site manager for the event. He envisions a table with our "air field wanted" sign Viva La Fiesta! that we displayed at the Santa Ynez Airport Days and also, a couple more tables from which to operate the Delta Dart program. The Delta Dart program has been promoted by the AMA and presented by our club for decades now with the idea that helping young kids construct the little rubber band airplane and fly them successfully will engender later interest in model aviation and beyond. It was my opinion that perhaps even more inspirational would be to display something like a 60 size ARF with all of the parts right out of the box displayed in front of the box top with the picture. The kids and parents alike could see what is actually involved with getting into our hobby and I could even see some kid saying "hey dad, can we get one of those?" Because it is more than a little toy plane and the dad might take more interest in the construction and flying, I can also see the dad saying "why sure son, let's do it". Now if that dad happens to own a ranch with some unused land well... we can dream can't we?? Only one of you has thought my idea worthy of further consideration so I guess it will just die on the vine being unable to buck the inertia of tried and true but long in the tooth programs. Again, this is my personal opinion and not an official position of the SBRCM, its Board of Directors, the AMA or any other individuals or entities. Hey, I usually charge people for such legalese. Anyhow, hope to see you at the two events and maybe even down at Casitas. Glenn Dorfman, SBRCM President Club Meeting Minutes 7/6/2017 The meeting was called to order at 6:35 PM by Secretary Tom Wolf. President Glenn Dorfman, Vice President Ron Roth and Treasurer Lloyd Gibbs were absent. A total of 7 members and 2 guests were present. The guests were Bill Hallier, who recently moved to the area and flies electric and fuel aircraft; and Nathan Field, who flies electrics and helicopters (450 and 500 size). Nathan is interested in connecting with other helicopter flyers in the club. Both guests indicated that they are interested in joining the club. Old Business: Treasurer s Report: There was no report due to Lloyd being absent. It is believed that the bank account balance is about $24,000. Safety Officer s Report: Dale Byers, club safety officer, reported that there were no new safety issues to discuss (i.e. no new rattle snake sightings at the Lake Casitas flying field). Elings Park: Hartley King reported that the flying strip is usable. Hartley indicated that he flies there 2-3 times a week. The entire field has been mowed by the park, so landing off the strip is not much of an issue. Flying Site Search: We are still working this effort, but with little to show for it. Chumash: In our sixth attempt to get a meeting with the Chumash, we sent a copy of our proposal to the tribe via an attorney that Jim Kolanek knows who does business with the tribe. The proposal was sent a couple of weeks ago. So far, we have had no response (Zero responses from the tribe in six attempted contacts over the last two years). There was a short discussion of Dick Curtis s suggestion to try to get meetings with candidates for office in the coming election cycle, such as the Congressional District, County Board of Supervisors, Mayor, etc, with our pitch centered around helping with drone issues, providing a safe place to fly, and youth education/recreation. The general feeling was why not? We really don t have anything to lose (except some time) and if we were able to get one or more elected officials in our corner, that may get things going for us. Charlie DiMauro suggested contacting CalTrans to see if there is any state held land that might be available and suitable. He also discussed Earl Warren Show Grounds, which is State owned/managed property. That idea was shot down pretty quickly due to the close proximity of houses and the freeway. New Business/ Upcoming Events: Page 2

3 Goleta Lemon Festival, September 16/17: Tim Lawton offered to see if we could have a display booth at the festival to publicize the club and its search for a flying site. The possible participation might be a static display of our models, with handouts, etc; a give-away of AMA Delta Darts for the kids, or a building session for the kids (AMA Delta Darts). The potential usefulness of this was briefly discussed, but since participating would require a number of volunteers to pull this off, an investment by the club, and due to the limited number of members at the meeting, it was decided to put a mass-mailing out to see the level of interest before we commit to this event. Annual Club BBQ / Meeting, Thursday August 3 at 6:00 PM at our usual meeting location, the Airport Visitor Education Center. Dale Byers is cooking tri-tip. The BBQ is free, and wives or significant others are welcome. So far, we have 17 signed up, but we expect more. Volunteers to help set up are needed (arrive around 5 PM for setup). Tom Wolf will contact Fred Wudl to see if he is willing to help pick up some of the fixings, like he did last year. If you wish to attend, please RSVP to Glenn Dorfman with a head count for your party. T-28 pylon race: The Tri Valley Flyers of Santa Maria are holding a Parkzone / Eflite T-28 race at their club flying site on Sunday July 16. On July 22, the Ventura Comets are having a warbird day / BBQ / Swap Meet at the Lake Casitas flying site. All are welcome. $10 entry fee includes lunch. The Tri Valley Flyers (Santa Maria) are holding their annual Giant Scale Fly-in on July It is open to monoplanes of 80 inch wing span or larger, and biplanes of 60 inch wing span or larger. This is usually a well-attended event. Christmas Party 2017: We have reserved the room at Harry s Plaza Café for Saturday, December 2. Show and Tell: There were no models for Show and Tell at this meeting, but Dale Byers discussed his recent Spectrum Transmitter failure that caused multiple crashes over the last month or two. The gimbal / potentiometer for the elevator channel failed, resulting in a wandering neutral setting. Program: There was no program for this meeting. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:00 PM. Member Spotlight There was no submission for this feature this month New Projects: Sorry, but there was no submission this month Around and About: Lake Casitas 07/24/2017 John Fodor and his Parkzone T-28 Dale Byer s electric powered Quaker on short final. Submitted by: Tom Wolf, SBRCM Secretary Page 3
