2 13:45 14:40: (B): Visit to Ancient Days antique shop 14:45 15:00: Introduction to Heidelberg by Sybrand van der Spuy (local expert) and Heidelberg Heritage Association at the Klipkerk (Free) 15:00 17:30: Guided Walking Tour of Heidelberg by Francois Mouton (registered tourist guide) with insights by Nicholas Clarke (author & architect) and Pieter Kotzé (CEO, Historical Homes of South Africa) (R50pp) Starting at the Klipkerk, delegates proceed to the Anglican Church in Marais Street. From there they go on a gentle down-hill stroll through Laer Volkskool where refreshments will be served. After the refreshments, the tour continues through the town passing the AG Visser House where Pieter Kotzé of Historical Homes of South Africa will give a quick summary of what the restoration plans for the building are. The tour will then proceed towards the old town centre where many historic buildings are in desperate need of restoration. The tour concludes at the old Standard Bank building where Paul Kruger purportedly spent a night. Transport back to respective guest houses and/or town hall will be provided. A shuttle will also be made available for delegates who cannot walk long distances. BREAK 17:30 18:30 19:00 till late: A Tribute to AG Visser: An evening of poetry at the Old Gaol (Jail). (R180pp) In conjunction with the MOTHs, AG Visser Primary School and Heidelberg Hospital, guests will be treated to an evening of poetry and song with a talk around the relevance of Dr AG Visser in both the worlds of poetry and medicine. Heidelberg Hospital (formerly AG Visser Hospital) is turning 100 this year and this function will be part of its celebrations. On the menu for the evening is a traditional spitbraai prepared by members of the local MOTHs. A vegan option will be available. * There is a cash bar and a shuttle back to respective guest houses (departing at 22:00). * Please bring warm clothes as it can get very chilly in the old building. 2

3 FRIDAY 20 OCTOBER 09:30 09:45: Registration and tea and coffee at Klipkerk, side hall (R20pp) 10:00 11:00: Tour and discussions at Klipkerk a look at the architectural style and war history of Heidelberg s landmark building. Speakers: Nicholas Clarke & Jackie Grobler (historian) (R50pp) 11:15 12:15: Heidelberg Station tour by Bouwe Wiersma (local entrepreneur), followed by a presentation by Nicholas Clarke locating the station in the wider context of the Nederlandsche-Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorwegmaatschappij (NZASM) (Free) 12:30 13:30: A light lunch at The Place overlooking the Old Town Hall and Old Hotel. (R80pp) Ludwig Ankiewicz (local historian) will share tales of the southern Highveld during lunch. 13:30 14:00: An illustrated talk on the stone wall ruins of Suikerbosrand by Karim Sadr, who is a professor in the School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies at the University of Witwatersrand. His main research interest is the question of how and why hunter-gatherers became food producers, namely farmers and/or herders. Lately he has been investigating the formation of new societies in the Highveld during the mid-second millennium AD. The people concerned built numerous settlements with stone-walled structures whose ruins are to be found in the region. He is examining the role that Khoisan hunters and herders may have played in this case of ethno-genesis. (R50pp) 14:00 17:30: Heidelberg Heritage Tour A guided tour of heritages sites and their challenges in Heidelberg (AG Visser House, Old Gaol, Bakoond, Ancient Days, War Cemetery, Standard Bank) (R130pp) 17:30-18:30: Recess 18:30 for 19:00: HASA gala awards dinner at Hoër Volkskool (R300pp) A cash bar will be available. 3

4 Saturday 21 October 09:30 10:00: Registration with tea and coffee at British American Tobacco (BAT) (R180 pp for the day s programme) 10:00 11:15: A tour of BAT followed by a presentation by Remgro (Rupert Foundation) on the role it has played in preserving heritage sites in South Africa (with reference to Stellenbosch and elsewhere and the successes achieved there) Mandatory safety shoes will be provided. Please confirm shoe sizes in the accompanying booking form. 11:15 12:00: Concluding panel discussion at BAT on Heidelberg s conservation challenges and opportunities 12:15 15:30: Tour of Shalimar Ridge and Ratanda Stopping for a late morning tea at the Hindu temple where Paddy Padiachy (HHA member & local businessman) will give guests a short history of Shalimar Ridge, which was established in The tour proceeds past the memorial of Alina Anti-Pass Mokoena, a struggle hero who participated in the 1956 Women s March to the Union Buildings. The tour proceeds to the Lesedi offices in Ratanda, where a plaque will be unveiled to commemorate the naming of Ratanda by Justus Tsungu (former member of the Advisory Committee tasked with naming the area). 13:30: Lunch will be served at Lesedi Old Hall at Ratanda followed by a presentation on the musical history of Ratanda by Manqoba Ntombela of Whoza Africa. 15:45 16:30: A short tour of the historic farmstead, De Rust, built in 1906 by Frederick Jacobus Bezuidenhout and Wilhelmina Christina Johanna Meyer. The tour will be conducted by Flip Minnaar, owner of De Rust and heir of Frederick Jacobus Bezuidenhout. 5 HEIDELBERG: OTHER PLACES OF INTEREST Tours of the Heritage Heidelberg are available but must be booked in advance. For more information You may also wish to explore these other places of interest unguided: Alice Glöckner Nature Reserve, Lagerspoort Road This Langlaagte 168ha reserve is home to the rare and threatened Heidelberg Copper Butterfly. BAT (British American Tobacco), 1 Prinsloo Avenue One of the biggest tobacco factories in the Southern Hemisphere formed part of the Rembrandt / Richmond group of companies established by the Rupert s at Heidelberg in De Rust, R42 Old impressive homestead and provincial heritage site. The owner Frikkie Bezuidenhout (1906) wanted the house to have everything that Queen Victoria had in Buckingham Palace: Toilet pan delft china; the bath which has a Jacuzzi; the ceilings and fireplaces are original; first house in the then Transvaal to have electricity. Diamante & Goud Plaashuiswinkel, 40 Begeman Street Open Monday to Saturday. Also visit the well-known night market on the 1 st Friday night of every quarter starting in March. All that glitters is gold. Diepkloof Farm Museum, Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, R550 This provincial heritage site is located in the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. This is one of the oldest farm yards in Gauteng with one house built around 1850 and the other around 1890 together with a coach house, smithy and stable. Eskort Bacon, Prinsloo Street Life s delicious. Established in 1954 and one of the busiest pork abattoirs in the country. Visit the renowned butchery on site and keep a lookout for some kassler ribs. Golden Oldies Visit Piet Retief s grandson s home on the corner of Louw & Pretorius streets and see the old farmhouse on Wes Street & Mona Drive, Jordaan Park. A lot more to seek out. Ghost bridge If you don t believe in optical illusions your car will convince you otherwise. See how ghost Eugene pushes you over the bridge into Rensburg, past Walker Street, where the AWB was established! Heidelberg Kloof Estate, R23 Previously an Aventura Resort, now an exclusive residential estate nestled in the Kloof. From here the Kloofspruit feeds the Blesbokspruit downtown. Heidelberg Golf Club Established in 1992, Heidelberg Golf Club welcomes visitors with its special blend of old world charm and modern amenities in an atmosphere of conviviality and camaraderie. 5

6 Karan Beef, R549 Privately owned and the biggest feedlot in the Southern Hemisphere, ,000 cattle a day will keep the veggies away. Now quality has a name. Kiepersol Cottage, Kiepersol Street, Overkruin Situated on the Klipkraal Hiking Trail, on the farm Rietfontein, 35km out of town, the trail passes Iron Age settlements inhabited by Khatla and Bafokeng Sotho speaking people. Also see our national flower and leave with a song in your heart: suikerbossie ek wil jou hê Marievale Bird Sanctuary, R42, Marievale Road Extension, Nigel The Blesbokspruit Ramsar site is a wetland of international importance and birding hotspot. Mosque and Muslim school, Van der Westhuizen Street This was the second oldest Mosque (1903) of the former Transvaal. The building has been renovated, although the school was sadly demolished and relocated. The New Cemetery, R42 The site of the Anglo-Boer South African War ( ) concentration camp and monument to the women and children who died in concentration camps. O Reilly House The scene of tennis and good meals during the war. Note the pigeons loft above the garage. The Old Cemetery, Heidelberg Kloof Hindu, Muslim, black and coloured people are buried here. Many of whom lived through the SA War. Round 14, Heidelberg Road, Ratanda Experience real African hospitality in a shebeen in Ratanda township and see why locals like (rata) and love (tanda), the place whilst drinking traditional umqombothi and eating African cuisine. Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, R550 Proclaimed on 27/3/1974, this reserve offers ±12,000 hectares unspoilt natural environment of Rocky Highveld Grassland and mountain range with an altitude of m above sea level. The Diepkloof Farm Museum is worth a stop or have a braai at Holhoek picnic spot. Further afield: Val hamlet, Val, Purportedly South Africa s smallest hamlet has a resident population of 12 people! Val was founded in 1888 as a stagecoach stop-over between the Lowveld and Johannesburg. Visit the Val Hotel and museum or the Moegeploeg Pub. Locals say there s lots to see, but nothing to do.
