3 WELCOME TO THE FREE TRADE HALL BUILT IN 1856 TO COMMEMORATE THE REPEAL OF THE CORN LAWS, THE FREE TRADE HALL HAS BEEN AT THE CENTRE OF LIFE IN MANCHESTER FOR 160 YEARS. Free Trade Hall lived some of it s most storied years so far as a concert hall and rock venue, welcoming a diverse range of famous (and sometimes infamous) stars, including Ziggy Stardust, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, the Sex Pistols and even Abba. In 2004 this masterpiece became a magnificent luxury 263 bedroom hotel, award winning restaurant and tranquil spa. 4 THE STORY OF THE FREE TRADE HALL THE FREE TRADE HALL WAS BUILT BY EDWARD WALTERS TO BE USED AS A PUBLIC HALL FOR LITERARY, RELIGIOUS, MUSICAL AND OTHER PURPOSES. One way we have chosen to remember and honour how this building has influenced the city of Manchester over the years was to take the names of some of her iconic visitors and use them to name rooms and areas throughout the hotel. In July 1858, Charles Dickens reads A Christmas Carol. This was to be one of Dickens last ever readings. February 1904, future Prime Minister Winston Churchill addresses Free Trade in a speech that would last 1.5hrs. October 1905, Suffragettes Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney are thrown out of a Liberal meeting for unfurling a banner with the slogan Votes for women. They were arrested and charged with assault. Others have also come to speak from Oscar Wilde in the 1800s to the Dalai Lama in a final public event in In 1858 the Free Trade Hall became the home of the Hallé Orchestra, beginning the building s journey into her influence of music in Manchester. The building suffered extensive damage during the Manchester blitz of World War 2. Only the original frontage and the return onto Southmill Street survived. She stood an unused shell for many years until she could be rebuilt. November 16th 1951, The Free Trade Hall re-opens as a purpose built concert venue. For over 2 decades, the 50s and the 60s, the Free Trade Hall was the favoured Manchester venue of all the Jazz greats both English and American. 5 THE GIG THAT CHANGED THE WORLD THE FREE TRADE HALL WOULD REALLY HIT HER MUSICAL STRIDE IN THE LATE 60S AND 70S, WHEN YOU COULD SEE BANDS LIKE LED ZEPPELIN FOR ONLY 1. MAY 1966, AFTER RECENTLY GOING ELECTRIC, DYLAN PERFORMS AT THE FREE TRADE HALL AND IS BRANDED A JUDAS. The most iconic concert of all; June 1976, the Sex Pistols play the Lesser Free Trade Hall. It is dubbed the gig that changed the world, as it was the birth of Punk Rock and influenced an entire generation of future music makers. In 1996 the Free Trade Hall would close her doors and sit unused but not forgotten. After several attempts to partner with different companies, success came in the form of a marketing partnership with Edwardian Hotels London hosting a Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel. Building work began in 2003 with a specific dictate to retain the history and heritage of this historic building. Walters original façade from 1856 was retained and fronts a beautiful mixture of new and old, modern and classic. With a fully stocked honesty bar, The Fitzgerald is perfect for entertaining. THE VALENTINO SUITE Words cannot describe the thrill of a stay in The Valentino Suite, a 98m 2 two bedroom retreat which pays homage to the iconic silent film star Rudolph Valentino. Its south-facing panoramic can be enjoyed from an external balcony running the length of the Suite, giving outside space for luxurious al fresco affairs high above the city.
