S o u t h e r n N e v a d a C h a p t e r, I n c. # From the Director s Saddle Once again, I send greetings to all of my HOG family. I am so in love with riding at this time of year here in the desert. The riding just can't get much better. We are truly blessed with some of the best riding weather around. But, at the same time, we still need to be prepared for rapid and potentially unexpected changes in the weather. Those of you that have been caught in a sudden desert downpour know that it can turn the riding experience from wonderful to miserable in the blink of an eye. Last month, we had two opportunities for some of our members to experience exactly that. I suspect that the MotorClothes division at the dealership had a sudden increase in sales in the rain gear section. Getting wet during a ride doesn't completely destroy the enjoyment of the ride. But, for some of us, it does significantly decrease that level of enjoyment. I love to ride as much as any of you and I normally don't care where we are going as I enjoy the ride as much as any destination. But, I have reached a place in my life where my level of comfort is important too. I normally carry lots of "extra stuff" on the bike when we ride. I never know when those extras are going to become essentials. Way back when I still had dark hair and was a few pounds lighter, I didn't mind at all riding in any kind of weather in whatever I was wearing at the time. I don't have the same approach to riding now that I did then and I hope that you don't either. I have learned to expect the unexpected, to prepare for it and to carry the clothes and equipment I may need. Enough of that. 2 Director s Saddle...continued I probably won't be able to ride with you on some of the October rides. As some of you already know, I have developed a minor little problem with my knee that will undoubtedly force me off of my bike for awhile. In fact, I had to do the Williams overnighter on four wheels. Trust me, that isn't the best way to join in with a Chapter event. But, even if I can't ride, I hope to be able to join you. Going along in a car is not the best way, but it is better than not going at all. The view from the car was pretty spectacular, glistening bikes all the way to the horizon. Our October schedule is as packed as we can possibly make it and, hopefully, there is something in that schedule for all of you. With the exception of the Halloween weekend, we have some kind of ride happening on every weekend in October. The first two weekends have events that are in support of different charities. The Chapter ride on the 4th will be the second year we have ridden in the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation event. This event is open to all brands but, last year, we had one of the largest groups in the ride. An award is given to the group with the largest level of participation. It would be kind of cool to see more Harleys at this event that the other "H bike, in spite of the fact that the sponsor is the other "H" bike. Hopefully, we will see Harleys in the majority this year. My wife and I will not be able to attend this ride as we will be in Arizona for my eldest son s wedding! The second charity event is "Desert Thunder" on October 10th. This one is extremely popular with riders from all over the southwest. Our members will be working at the poker stops. Lene has been working hard for several months to coordinate the myriad of details that will be needed to make this one a success. Be sure and thank her for all of her work when you talk to her. The volunteers at the stops should also be given huge thanks for donating their time. This event just couldn't happen without them. If you haven't made plans for one or both of these events, I strongly encourage you to do so. The rides for charity are fun to participate in and both of these help support two very worthwhile causes. There are two Chapter rides on the weekend of the One is an LOH ride to Temple Bar. We haven't been to Temple Bar in several years. I think the Ladies of Harley have made a great selection. This should be an outstanding ride at this time of year. The next day, we will have a New Member Ride to Cottonwood Cove. We went to Cottonwood Cove earlier this year but not as part of a New Member Ride. If you are new to the Chapter, this one is a fairly simple ride where you will certainly learn our riding style. It will be a great opportunity for you to not only ride with the Chapter, but to meet your new family. That one will return to the dealership where lunch will be provided. Our overnighter (on the weekend of the 24-26) is going to be a little different than any that we have ever tried to do since I have been a member. We will be going to Seal Beach in California on this two-night trip. The middle day will be a free day for you to do whatever you please. However, we will have an opportunity to see the area from the comfort of an open top double-decker tour/ party bus. There will be lots of stops at multiple destinations and there is lots to see in that area. The Road Captains can breathe a sigh of relief here as they won't have to get us around the Southern California traffic. Then, we will ride home on Monday the 26th. That is a full month. The applications for next year s officers have started coming in. If you haven't already turned in your Application, there is still time. I am confident that next year s Director will be selected early enough to have time to go over the applications long before the new year begins. There are lots of ways for you to get involved with the discretionary positions. I don't think it is possible to have too many Photographers. You never know when that perfect opportunity for capturing a memory is going to present itself. We have an Ambassador program that is outstanding. But, we can always use more Ambassadors. The Road Captains are the best there is anywhere but, once again, we can always use more. The primary positions are also a great way to help navigate the direction the Chapter goes. The more you get involved, the more you will find that you enjoy the whole HOG experience. Larry Kusler If it isn't fun, we're doing it wrong P A G E 2

Welcome New Members New Members: Emanuel Johnson (EJ) & Mike Traficant Friendly Reminder... Be sure to visit our online PHOTO GALLERY at Photographs are such a great way to remember events in our lives. Our SNHOG Online Photo Gallery is also a great way to share the fun we have as a Chapter with friends, family and anyone who is skeptical about joining our Chapter. All you have to do is browse the gallery for a few minutes and will quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round! Although Sharon Gordon, Deena McClain, Janine Patrick and Kenn Wynn are the "photographers" for the Chapter, they are obviously not the only ones who take pictures at our events. If you have photos you would like to submit, please send them to photos@snhoglv.com. Be sure to include the date and event the photos were taken and any other description you would like included. We will also be happy to post your name, crediting you with the photos you've taken. Thanks so much *** Note: If you prefer not to have your photo on the website, request a photo be removed or photo information updated, please let us know and we ll make the changes as soon as possible. You must mention the album name and placement number of the photo in question. Sharon Gordon Deena McClain Janine Patrick Kenn Wynn P A G E 3

With the love of riding our Harleys, also comes the need to collect Harley memorabilia. Some of us collect decorative items for our homes with anything having the name Harley Davidson on it. I was in a home last year that had an HD carpet, sofas, and a chair that were coordinated with pictures of bikes and engines. They also had HD lamps and accent accessories like clocks, mirrors and miniature bikes around the room. It looked great, and was a place to be admired. But, not all of us are able to furnish our homes HD - and for us, we seek other avenues of collectables. Some of us have collected tee shirts from every dealership they have stopped at along the Harley riding trail - I know my closet is full of them right now. I have, and know most of you have as well, collected patches from events. But, our vests can only hold so many of them and then we need to find a new way to use these necessary collectables. Some of us love the HD cups & glasses - my cupboard is full of them also. Oh, and yes, we all love the ride pins - Gary and I have made a place on the wall to display them - it s amazing how quickly they fill up a two by three foot space. I have been a collector for many years. I started out by collecting porcelain animals from Red Rose Tea back in the 70 s. I had quite a collection, at one time, from every box of tea I drank and proudly displayed my little creatures until the big Divorce happened - but that is another story. LOL Then, I moved on to collecting Elephants: from the expensive to the ridiculously stuffed, as well as just porcelain. I had glass ones, jade and metal, not to mention the slippers. All very beautiful, but after awhile, I had too many to display. That s when I moved on to roosters and chickens - which are great for the kitchen but not so much for the rest of the house. Yes, I do still have my kitchen collection but I also have a collection of tea pots and nowhere to put them at this time (and they would be hard to part with). Some are unique and others might be considered white elephants. LOL I know people have found ways to use their old patches and tee shirts - like making quilts, which I think is a terrific idea, but that takes talent and time as well as artistry. I admire those who are already talented enough to do this, and maybe someday I ll learn do that too. But, now (about two or three years ago anyway), I started collecting charms from all the dealerships that carry them! I find it a great way to wear a memory and to also have something that I can pass on later to my children. Gary travels and brings me a charm, from time to time, to add to my ever growing masterpiece. I love all of them and can tell you about each one. My tee shirts wear out after awhile but my charms will last a very long time. They don t take up much space and I really enjoy wearing my bracelet. I wonder if anyone else has something they have been collecting of Harley they would like to share! If so, write about it - we would love to read your story! 5 New Member Ride By Emanuel Johnson (EJ) Hi there. My name is E.J and I am new to the Chapter. On one of my visits to Red Rock Harley-Davidson on Rainbow Blvd., I was invited by one of the S.N.H.O.G. Road Captains (bad with names) to attend a membership meeting at Las Vegas Harley-Davidson. Being relatively new to Las Vegas, and definitely a new bike rider, mostly solo, except an occasional ride with my neighbor, Geep and his wife, Beverly, who both have their own bikes, I thought that this would be a good way to learn new riding routes and meet new riding friends. When I arrived at the meeting location, with my 09 Dyna Super Glide Custom, I introduced myself, and said I came to join the S.N.H.O.G. group. I was immediately greeted by many members, including Road Captains, Director, Treasurer, New Membership Officer and Photographers, to name a few. It was very humbling to have so many nice and friendly members come up and introduce themselves and shake hands with me. I told many in the group that I was retired and have lived in Las Vegas for little more than two years, and wasn t doing a lot with myself. So, I bought a motorcycle, and except for the last three or four months, I had never sat on a motorcycle in my life. And, by learning to ride a motorcycle, I thought this would help keep me from going senile (some chuckled). At the conclusion of the Membership, there was an announcement made that there would be a new membership ride on the coming Saturday. I knew nothing about riding with a large group of motorcyclists, which started my stomach to turning and put my nerves on edge. But, amazingly, many members assured me that I would do fine (how did they know what I was feeling?). On Saturday, we met at the Las Vegas Harley-Davidson store for the new members ride. I didn t have a clue of how to get started, or what I needed to do to edge my way into this ride. But, thanks to Jon Dostal, who came to my aid and told me where to line up, who I would be following, what distance to keep or what distance I felt comfortable with and where he would be during the ride, it was a big comfort to me. Then, with the starting roar of Harley-Davidsons, including my own, I was scared to death. But, as before, the Hawg Angels came to my rescue. After we began to ride, I immediately put into practice what I had been instructed to do and was starting to feel more at ease and having fun. The farther we rode, the better I felt and probably, except for the group members, those who were standing on the side and those driving in the competing traffic didn t know that this was my first organized motorcycle ride. I can go on and on with happy thoughts from this riding experience, but what I can take with me for life is: 1). How nice and friendly the members had been to me. 2). The professional manner in which the ride was conducted by the Road Captains, who keep us safe and kept the group moving together. 3). And above all, the amount of fun I had during that ride. Sincerely, Emanuel Johnson (EJ) Make Your Miles Count The HOG Mileage Program is beautiful in its simplicity you ride, and we ll reward you. We ll even give you a pin and patch for just signing up (registration is FREE). After that, additional pins, patches and motorcycle medallions will be awarded at various intervals. Your first reward comes at just 1,000 miles (1,610km). Of course, there are some rules you ll have to follow: Only active HOG members (full, life, associates and associate life) may participate. If you have more than one Harley, you have to enroll each one, and only the mileage after you enroll will count towards your award. You may participate as a rider, a passenger or both just make sure you fill out a form for each. And, your Enrollment Form (available at the Chapter meetings) and award submissions must be officially endorsed by an Authorized Harley Davidson Dealership. However, it is still your responsibility to submit them once they are endorsed. So, what are you waiting for? Get enrolled in the program, enjoy riding with the Chapter, and reap the rewards for putting enjoyable miles on your Harley. P A G E 5

Our group met in Boulder City on 9/5 where we welcomed our guests from England, Lee & Julie, and, as always before a ride, we were shown our hand signals and discussed safe riding practices. We all left Boulder City at 8am and headed through Hoover Dam stopped to take a group photo) and then left for Kingman to eat breakfast at Calico Restaurant. We then rode Historic Route 66 to Seligman where we stopped for gas, put on our rain gear, and decided to go past Williams to visit the Grand Canyon Harley-Davidson store just outside of Flagstaff (where it rained heavily just before we got there and while we were there). The rain stopped by the time we left and the group headed back to Williams where the officers had arranged to have a large BBQ brought up, along with burgers/hot dogs and all the fixings. We had a great time eating and visiting in the outside fenced area of Holiday Inn. The next day, the group split their activities some went on the train ride while others went their own way to ride new adventures. Larry and I left with Larry & Jeanette Downen and traveled to Flagstaff for breakfast at Cracker Barrel, then headed South on Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Road) to Forest Road 90, going by upper & lower Lake Mary and Mormon Lake, where we stopped at a wildlife preserve and saw a large herd of elk. When we left there, we traveled a little ways up the road and stopped at a gas station where we met with several of our group members who were doing the same lake ride. We then rode on through Cottonwood and stopped to walk around Jerome. The weather had been wonderful so we continued on to Prescott and then headed back to the Harley Dealership in Flagstaff (and yes, it rained again while we were there!) Larry & Jeanette said it rains every time they visit this Harley store. We ate dinner next door where we barbequed steaks and enjoyed seeing two absolutely beautiful rainbows from the windows. We saw most of our great group in the dining room of the Holiday Inn when we returned to Williams and everyone we talked to said they had a great time that day. The next morning, we all left at 8am, taking I40 and headed to Kingman where we stopped for gas. The group then headed to Oatman and planned to ride home through Laughlin. (Unfortunately, we had to leave Kingman and head straight home via Hoover Dam so we missed the rest of the trip with the group). It was a wonderful weekend and great fun riding with our friendly group!! We are so blessed to belong to this Chapter our great Road Captains kept us all safe yet again and made the ride a joy! Our thanks to them and the officers that go out of their way to make our trips so special!! We hope Lee & Julie had a great trip with us. Our Treasurer, Joe De Julius, gave our monthly report. (see next page for summary). Ladies of Harley Officer, Wendy Smith, is having a bowling event to be held at the Santa Fe Station on Sunday, September 13 th 10 am. Larry gave thanks to Rich Moore for going out of his way to bring his barbeque to Williams for our overnighter, where he cooked approximately 80 hamburgers and 40 hotdogs for the group. As usual, he did a terrific job and we, as a Chapter, are very grateful for his efforts. Thanks to Lana Childers for shopping for the food for this event and also thanks to everyone who helped with the set-up before and tear-down afterwards. All had an exceptional time. Larry expressed the importance of using hand signals when riding in the group. Be sure to pass the hand signal back so everyone knows what is going to happen ahead. If you have not filled out the 2010 officer application form yet, please do so as soon as possible as we are getting prepared for the next year. We still need volunteers for Desert Thunder Poker Run, see Lene and Mark. Also, please be sure to check the calendar for any changes - as well as our HOG website. Call The Bagleys LADIES OF HARLEY Sunday, September 13, 2009 was our Ladies of Harley Bowling event at the Santa Fe Station, from 10:00am to 1:00pm. We had 5 teams of 5 players on each team along with other Chapter members that came by to watch, cheer and support us. As the members arrived, I signed them in and had them draw a numbered disk for their lane assignment and to make up the teams by the luck of the draw. I found this is the best way to mix everything up and to give everyone an equal chance to be on the winning team. Bowling started right at 10:00am with bowling balls traveling down the alleys knocking down pins left and right; some strikes spares splits gutters and, of course, those OPEN frames. There were lots of high-fives, clapping, cheering and a good job and good try heard from lane to lane. Every time I looked around, everyone was having fun and enjoying the company of each other, including the Chapter members that just came to watch. A big thanks goes to Sharon Gordon for attending and taking pictures for this event. Also, I want to thank Las Vegas Harley-Davidson for providing the poker chips for the 1 st and 2 nd place teams and the high series woman and high series man. The 1 st place team included: Troy Palmer, Matt Hamm, Andy Quiroz, Gary Childers and Karen Heriford. They all received a $ poker chip. The 2 nd place team included: Sunshine Laviolette, Paul Smith, Sara Edge, Sandi Quiroz and Devlin Baldwin. They each received a $10.00 poker chip. The high series woman was Sunshine Laviolette and high series man was, again, Troy Palmer and both of them received an additional $ poker chip. Penny and I would like to say, Thank you to everyone that attended and if you weren t able to make it, you missed out on a lot of FUN!!!. Catch you next time on our LOH ride in October. Wendy Smith, LOH Officer P A G E 8

From the Road Captains... Hello SNHOG Members, For those of you who are new members, or have not met me yet, allow me to introduce myself. I am Ken Walker, one of your Road Captains. If you follow this column, you know that our primary focus is making our Chapter rides as safe and enjoyable as we can. There are many things that come under the umbrella of safety, and speaking of umbrellas, I hope that you read Sam s excellent article on riding in the rain in last month s column. In addition to the topics covered here, the Chapter conducts Safety Day training. We had one earlier this year and, as this goes to press, have another scheduled for the 19th of September. I hope that you were able to attend one or both of those events. Having the training cadre from Metro s Motor Officer Division provide hands on training is both valuable and enjoyable. In addition to trying to recall your Riders Edge or Experienced Riders courses (you have taken the Experienced Riders Course haven t you?), the following are good resources for Motorcycle Safety: Safety can also be impacted by the environment and the comfort of the rider. We all learned a lot about the heat this summer now we need to think about the cooler weather that we will be enjoying this Fall and Winter. A 50 degree temperature and a speed of 65 mph cause us to experience a wind chill of 37 degrees on exposed skin. The temperature drops about 5 degrees per thousand feet of altitude so when we leave Las Vegas at about 2,000 feet and ride to Duck Creek or the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which are about 8,000 to 9,000 feet, we can lose 30+ degrees! Be prepared dress in layers so that you can add or remove them as the temperature fluctuates. Don t tough it out. Give the Road Captains a Thumbs Up and pull out of the group safely to put on that extra layer. Continued on next page PAGE 9

From the Road Captains... Continued Bring your rain gear (ask the folks who went to Ely and Williams), not only as another potential layer, but for the obvious reason! Water conducts heat away from your bare skin 25 times faster than the air. Wet clothes reduce the loss to 5 times faster than the air still a chilly, uncomfortable and potentially dangerous situation. Once you have purchased your brand new rain gear, put on your typical riding gear (especially your boots), and take a few minutes to practice putting it on. (Standing in the pouring rain is not the best time to figure this out!). Take a few minutes to plan ahead and be prepared to ride safe and have fun! Our calendar is really busy and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the upcoming rides! Ken Walker Road Captain STARS, STARS and more STARS By Jon Dostal Last month, I assisted in making sure all riders signed in and passed out a star pin to all participants. Several individuals asked these questions: What is the significance of the star? When do I receive a star? How do I collect all the different color stars?. I thought to myself that with so many new members, it was time again to re-cap the purpose of these colorful stars to all. 1. The significance of the star is to recognize the number of rides in which individuals have participated. 2. The stars are passed out on new member rides and on special events. 3. There are three color stars - BLUE, RED and WHITE, in that order. 4. In order to receive the top WHITE STAR, one must participate in new member rides/special events and follow the process outlined below: You will receive a BLUE STAR on your first ride (new member/special event). Collect 5 BLUE stars and turn them all back in and get your first RED star. Repeat this process 5 times (Turn in 5 BLUE stars for a RED one). When you have collected 5 RED stars, turn them all back in and receive the WHITE star. So remember to participate! Get your STARS and be recognized for your participation in the Chapter. Your Ambassador, Jon Dostal P A G E 10
