The bus company, Butlers Bus Tours, will take you from the airport to your accommodation in. 2 afterwards Free time Have some free time to get used to your new surrounding. Steeped in history, City is fast gaining a reputation as one of Europe's hippest cities. Like Venice, the city is built upon water, and the city center is built on an island in the River Lee, just upstream of Harbour. The two channels of the River Lee which embrace the city center are spanned by many bridges, and this gives the city a distinctive continental air. Walking time: depending on your meeting point 2:00 pm Tour Enjoy a private guided tour of Fitzgerald s Park and Public Museum. Public Museum is situated in Fitzgerald Park on the Mardyke. The present museum was opened in 1945 under the administration of University College. Its collections cover the economic, social and municipal history of the city and surrounding area from the Mesolithic period onwards, with particular emphasis on Civic Regalia and the trades and crafts of the 19 th and 20 th centuries. Not only is the market famous for its food, it is also famous for its visit by Queen Elizabeth II in May Alternatively, visit Blackrock Castle south of. The name Gougane Barra comes from Saint Finbarr, who is said to have built a monastery on an island in the lake nearby during the 6 th century. Built nearly 600 years ago by one of Ireland's greatest chieftans, Cormac MacCarthy, it has attracted millions of visitors ever since. Some say it has something to do with the Blarney Stone, the legendary Stone of Eloquence, found at the top of the tower. Kiss it and you will never again be lost for words. Designed by Englishman William Burges, the cathedral is built of limestone from, the interior consists of stone from Bath, and the walls are lined with red marble from the area. Enjoy the murals on the church ceilings, the stained glass windows, the 46 foot high Bishop s throne, the marble floors, the hand carved oak furnishings and the 1870 church organ consisting of an astonishing 3012 pipes. The town s name derieves from the Irish name Baile an Fheirtéaraigh meaning "Ferriter's townland. It is in the west of the Corca (Dingle) peninsula and according to the 2002 census, about 75% of the town's population speak the Irish language on a daily basis. The village is named after the Norman-Irish Feiritéar family who settled in Ard na Caithne in the late medieval period and of whom the 17 th century poet and executed leader, Piaras Feiritéar, remains the most famous member. The older Irish name for the village An B(h)uailtín ("the little dairy place") is still used locally. Its purpose is to tell the history of the barracks, the history and traditions of the Defence Forces and the story of General Michael Collins. Its collection contains significant artefacts that are associated with key periods of this history includung a number of iconic military uniforms dating from the 1800 s right through to the present day. This unique institution celebrates one of the great success stories of Ireland, the butter trade. The museum is located in the original White Star Line Ticket Office in the center of Cobh town (formally known as Queenstown), the departure point for the final 123 passengers who boarded the Titanic. If the weather allows it, spend some time in one of the city s parks or at its coastline. You also will have the chance to read scenes of a play out loud. Rothe House was built between 1594 and The property comprises three houses, three enclosed courtyards and a large garden. John Rothe, who was a wealthy merchant and landowner in Kilkenny, built the first house in 1594 and as his family grew (to 12 children) he built the second and third houses. Originally built in the 13 th century, Castle functioned as a military fortress, a prison, treasury, courts of law and the seat of English Administration in Ireland for 700 years. If you stay in and the sun is shining, why not soak up some rays in St. Stephen s Green or take a stroll down to Aston Quay, one of the many Quay s. Alternatively, you may consider traveling to some nearby sights or cities. A must-see while in the area is the Neolithic monument of Newgrange or Knowth, a Megalithic Passage Tomb built in about 3200 BC.
