3 Name:& & & Date:& & Roanoke Colony A man named Sir Walter Raleigh wanted to start a brand new English colony in the New World. A colony is a place that is ruled by another country. The Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth I, wanted an English colony also. She had seen the Spanish Queen and King getting rich from the gold that their explorers were finding. She wanted her explorers to go to the New World to find gold for England. Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth I came up with a plan to establish the first English colony. Queen Elizabeth I gave him permission to explore and build the colony, but Raleigh would have to organize and pay for the expedition himself. Sir Walter Raleigh sent a group of men to explore the New World. Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe commanded the expedition. They were told to travel to the New World and look for a good place to build the new English colony. They were also told to make contact with the Native Americans living there. The group named their new colony Roanoke after a nearby Native American tribe. They met with the Native American tribes, but did not get along with all of them very well.

4 The group did make friends with two men, Manteo from the Croatoan tribe and Wanchese a leader of the Roanoke tribe. When they came back to England they brought the two Native American men with them to tell them more about the region. After hearing how great the New World was, Raleigh put together another group to explore the area of Roanoke more. Seven ships with over 500 men sailed to Roanoke in April of 1585 on the second expedition. When they arrived they built a fort and homes on the island. But, they were greedy and started stealing from the Indian tribes and fighting with them. The nearby tribes became angry with them and stopped helping them farm and fish. By the summer of 1586 the Roanoke colonists were getting tired of living in such a difficult place. When the famous English sailor, Sir Francis Drake visited the island, they decided to sail back to England with him and abandon the colony. The third expedition to Roanoke would be different from the last two. It would include more women and children. A man named John White was the leader. He brought his daughter and her husband with him. His daughter even had a baby when they got to Roanoke. The baby was named Virginia Dare. She was the first English baby born in the New World. They were meant to settle the island of Roanoke permanently, which meant they would live there for the rest of their lives.

5 The colony quickly began to run out of supplies and they decided to send their leader, John White, back to England for supplies. John White didn t want to leave his family that had come to Roanoke with him, including his granddaughter, Virginia Dare. He decided to leave but promised he would return quickly. But England was in a war with Spain and so he couldn t use his ship to return to Roanoke until the war was over. The war lasted three years! When he finally made it back in & 1590, all he found was a carving on a tree. The word Croatoan was carved on a tree near the abandoned and empty colony. Croatoan was the name of a nearby Indian tribe. White wanted to sail to the nearby island where the Croatoan tribe lived, but a large storm appeared and he was forced to return to England. White never found out what happened to the lost colonists of Roanoke and it is still a mystery today!

6 Name:!!!!! Date:!!! Roanoke The Lost Colony What is a colony? What country and person sponsored Roanoke? Who was in charge of making decisions for the expedition? Did the explorers get along with nearby Native American tribes? Who was the leader of the third expedition to Roanoke? Why did John White leave the colony? What did John White find when he came back? A colony is a place that is ruled by another country. The Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth I gave permission for the expedition/colonization of Roanoke. Sir Walter Raleigh actually paid for the colony. Sir Walter Raleigh Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe were the leaders on the first voyage. At first: The group did not get along with the Native Americans Then: The colonists made friends with men from the Croatoan and Roanoke tribes. John White Finally: (After 2 nd expedition) The colonists became greedy and started stealing from and fighting with them. The colony began to run out of supplies so they sent him back to England. He found the word Croatoan" carved on a tree. The colony was abandoned and empty.
