2 Unit Reading A narrative read the narrative about a journey. What was the reason for the journey: fun, education or survival? From Slavery to Freedom: A Young Girl s Story I was a slave girl in Mississippi. Every day, I worked in the fields from morning till night. The sun was hot and the work was hard. My boss hit me if I stopped to rest. Life was terrible. One day, I heard about a wonderful place in the north Canada. All people were free there. I wanted to go, but I was scared. Then one night, I escaped and hid in a swamp. There were insects and snakes, but I didn t care. I wanted to be free. Some men and dogs started to look for me, so I crossed some streams and rivers. Then the dogs couldn t follow my smell. To be safe, I walked at night and I hid in the day. To survive, I ate corn and fruit. I wanted to get to Illinois. There was a group of people in Illinois helping slaves to escape. My journey took me many months, but I finally found the group and they helped me get to Canada. I remember the first moment in my new country. I was so happy I jumped up and down, and then I got on my knees and kissed the ground. Grammar Watch Out! He sang. He didn t sing. NOT: He didn t sang.
