3 Stark County Ski Club View From The Top By: Donna Brancifort Well, the ski season has begun! As of the time of this writing, we ve had a perfect snow day, a less than great snow day, a non-ski day & cancelled trips! This has presented some challenges for us. It has become evident to us, because of a couple of situations, that some of you don t READ the newsletter & the s from the trip leaders. PLEASE READ!!! We are so happy that we have some first time trip leaders this year! They, as well as veteran trip leaders, can face challenges for their trip. Please show RESPECT & KINDNESS to the trip leaders, as well as other trip participants. One example of respecting other trip participants is by being on time for departures! Sometimes, difficult, (& even sometimes not popular) decisions need to be made by trip leaders. Let me assure you that the trip committee, officers & trip leaders spend countless hours in planning & execution of the trips, but sometimes there are issues that cannot be helped. NO ONE intentionally does ANYTHING just to make you angry trust me! It may be a change in parking, or pick-up location or time, as just a couple of examples. It may be something Mother Nature throws our way! Cancelling a trip is taken very seriously. Cancelling a multi-day trip has an entirely different set of challenges & it is definitely not taken lightly, by anyone. Next, I ask for PATIENCE - with your trip leaders, trip committee & officers! Those that deserve a refund for a lift ticket or a trip will get it but, it will take time to sort it all out. These will not be mailed. You can pick up at a meeting, a social or co-ordinate with Zee. She has something like 75 refunds to make because of the non -ski day & cancelled Bristol Swain trip. At the meeting, I asked the 68 attendees (yes, 68!), to ask themselves, does it really matter before you react! Enough about that! Now, onto marketing & fundraising! Read Gail s piece about volunteering for the HOF Marathon. This helps get the word out about us! You will also see ads about us in the Canton Repository in February. I have very exciting news on the fundraising front! We have a replacement for Blossom! It is volunteering in the new HOF Village! For right now, we are committed to working at this year s HOF Enshrinement weekend in Tom Benson HOF Stadium! See below for a few more details! OK, so let s all do a snow dance, so we can finish our season strong! We are committed to volunteer at the Enshrinement Festival right here, close to home!! I am looking, at this time, for commitments for 3 events. We will also be looking for more volunteers for future events. We will do that at a future date. We will be getting more information in the weeks & months ahead. I will communicate that information as it becomes available. 31 people have already signed up! AVI, the concessionaire, was so excited to hear from us! They had to get a non-profit organization from Toledo last year! That was a little discouraging to hear because we had made contact with both HOF & AVI last year looking for an opportunity. Oh well, water under the bridge! It s all working out now!!!! Let me know at donna.brancifort@timken.com if you are committing to an event(s) below. Provide me your name, address, cell phone #, as well as which event or event(s) you are willing to volunteer for. The events are: Thursday Aug 3 rd - HOF Game Saturday Aug 5 th Enshrinement Sunday Aug 6 th Concert of Legends (do not know who is performing yet) Thanks everyone! February 2017

Dave will continue to look at marketing for next year. Treasurer Report: Zee Kovach reported on the treasury amount prior to reconciling for the PknPk and H&H trips. She noted if you are due a refund from H&H, she is willing to issue vouchers instead of checks. Contact her to make arrangements if you don t want to wait till the February meeting for your refund. 15 Holimont/Holiday Valley (H & H) Ski Trip 2017 There were 41 of us that left the Faircrest parking lot (seven drove themselves) on Wednesday, January 11, at 5 P.M., arriving in Ellicottville, N.Y., at the Wingate Hotel at 9:30 P.M. Some of us walked into town, had a few beverages, and a late dinner. Thursday the 12 th, was a wash out due to rain. We did have two that muscled the rain and skied at Holiday Valley for a few hours until the downpour arrived. The rest of us headed into town, had lunch, and made several purchases, boosting the economy of Ellicottville. That evening was our theme party where 65% of us dressed up as pirates and invaded the hotel as we enjoyed vast amounts of hors d oeuvres and beverages. After the party, some of us returned to our rooms, others enjoyed the hot tub and pool and a few hands of euchre. On Friday the 13 th, the weather turned cold overnight, the slopes iced up at Holiday Valley, and the groomers did a fine job of grooming the mountainside. We hopped on the bus and headed over to Holiday Valley where 42 of us skied. Some of us hung out at the hotel, others have tried their skills at snow-shoeing. To spite the conditions at Holiday Valley, fun was had by all. At 4:00 p.m., all boarded the bus headed downtown to Ellicottville for dinner and last minute shopping, arriving home at 10:30 P.M. I had a pleasure of being the trip leader for this trip! John Peek N Peak 2017 On the morning of January 7th, the Stark County Ski Club took 53 snow sport lovers to Peek-N-Peak Resort in New York State. After loading 35 people at Faircrest, we picked up our final 18 in Akron. The roads were clear going East for our wonderful driver Sheila, although on the return West was another story. Once at PnP we had club rooms 5 & 6. They were clean, spacious, and should be a request for the club on future trips. Once everyone bundled up and outside, I felt like I could take a big sigh. Now it was up to mother nature, and she didn t let us down. Crispy cold, mostly sunny with trail conditions that would make the Rocky Mountains jealous. We left at 6:30 pm in dark snowy conditions with 53 tired smiling faces. When asked, everyone said they had fun and no-one was hurt! I call that a win win for my first trip. Roberta Graham

16 Stark County Ski Club Bus Seating and Baggage Protocol: Stark County Ski Club trips are scheduled well in advance and priced based on number of participants, number of bus seats available and cost of bus transportation services. Bus size needs are determined by the number of people, length of trip, and estimated amount of passenger luggage (ski bag, boot bag, and one piece of luggage, as the trip requires). The following guidelines have been established for the benefit of all of our club membership while traveling by bus or motor-coach. All skis/snowboards and all ski /snowboard boots must be in a proper equipment bag. No trip participant may board the bus/motor coach before the trip leader has boarded and has cleared the coach for loading. Baggage loading in bus bays may commence as soon as the driver has opened the bays. The two front seats of the bus, on either side of the aisle, are for use of the trip leader as he or she sees fit. They may open one of those pairs of seats to other passengers at their discretion. Special requests of passengers may be considered, but only granted by the trip leader. Unless the trip leader indicates that space is available inside the bus, all baggage stated above must be stowed in the bus baggage bays. If participants wish to have their ski boots on the bus, the boots must fit under their own seat. Unless indicated by the trip leader, a participant shall not place their boot bag on a seat next to them or a seat nearby. Bus seats are for people participating on the trips. All bus seats are to be available to any trip participant. Seats are available on a first come, first served basis. If any participant is traveling by him or herself, it is not permitted by any means to prevent any other participant to sit in the empty seat next to them. If you are traveling with a partner, the companion seat may be saved until the partner arrives.. Personal items (snacks/food, coolers, clothing items) are permitted on the bus as long as they can be safely stowed under the participants own seat or in the overhead compartment above their seat. The club may provide beverages and snacks depending on the trip destination and length. If the trip leader indicates that there is space available, boots in boot bags may be placed in the area of the rearmost seat of the bus or a location determined by the trip leader, stacked on the seat and floor to accommodate all who wish to take advantage of this offer. The Trip Leader is in charge and all decisions relating to changes during the trip made necessary by weather, injury or unexpected circumstances are his/hers to make.
