3 DIRECTORS SADDLE 2017 SNHOG DIRECTOR RODDY HOPPER Another year has come and gone and I would like to take the time to say THANK YOU to the 2016 Board Members for their hard work and dedication to the chapter and to Dirk Smith for his guidance, leadership and for keeping us entertained. When I was asked to be Director for 2017 I was humbled and proud to serve such a great chapter. As your new Director I encourage all members to be actively involved in the chapter. You don t need to be an officer to be active. Just be active! Promote the chapter and our sponsoring dealerships, Las Vegas, Red Rock, and Zion Harley-Davidson. Attend the meet-n-eats and overnighters. This is a great time to socialize. Become a volunteer and help our sponsoring dealerships during functions. What a great way to make friends and make memories by being an active member! Come on out to the meetings, attend the rides, be a volunteer, and have fun with the best Chapter in Nevada! Our Chapter website and newsletters are filled with upcoming events and rides. Our Chapter Officers are available also to answer your questions. So please, use them as a resource for any questions you may have. This is going to be a great year and we are going to RIDE and have FUN! So come on out and join us! Be Safe and Ride Safe! 4 ROAD CAPTAINS NEWS Welcome SNHOG Members to 2017, I hope you had a great Holiday Season and were able to join us on our annual Hair of the HOG ride New Year s Day. What a great way to start the New Year, riding your motorcycle, eating, and spending some time with you SNHOG family. For those who don t know me, my name is Jim Larson better known as Speedo. I have been in the chapter since 2004 and a Road Captain since I have been selected as your Lead Road Captain for Most of the Road Captains from 2016 will again be Road Captains in That will make my job a lot easier. I would like to thank all the Road Captains in advance for all the hard work they do training, planning the routes for rides, managing the rides, and ensuring the safety & enjoyment of our members on rides. I would also like to welcome Dirk Smith and Dale Lea to the Road Captain Training Program. If you are interested in becoming a Road Captain, fill out an Officer Application. Feel free to talk to me or any of the Road Captains if you have any questions about becoming a Road Captain. There were some great rides in We started with our annual Hair of the Hog and ended with Speedo s Mid-Week Ride. Between those rides there were overnighters, breakfast rides, lunch rides, new member rides, a progressive dinner ride, meet-n-eats and dealership events. This year there was a 5 day, 4 night overnighter known as Speedo s Devil s Highway Run. What a great overnighter. The group traveled just over 1700 miles and saw some spectacular scenery in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. As for the Devil s Highway; the last 90 miles has approximately 1100 turns, 6000-foot elevation change and took over 3 hours to complete. If you have an interest in doing an extended overnighter, let the chapter know. I would love to do a 4 or more day overnighter again this year. The 2017 primary board has started working on the calendars for this year using the input from the members that attended the November Planning Meeting. Our members came up with some great suggestions for overnighters, day rides, and meet-n-eats. Our first overnighter this year will be to Yuma. In Yuma, we will be staying at the La Fuente Inn. Besides the complimentary breakfast in the morning, they have complimentary cocktails in the evening. There are also several great restaurants within a short walking distance from the motel. Just doesn t get any better. Overnighters are a great way to spend some time getting to know your fellow chapter members. During the upcoming year, we need to remember: Safety! Safety! Safety! Safety is a mindset and should be on our minds always. Ensure that your motorcycle is mechanically sound and you are physically ready for the ride. Maintain an awareness of everything around you that can affect your riding Ride Safe. Always ride within your capabilities and that of your motorcycle Ride Your Own Ride. Make sure you are ready for any weather changes or a mechanical breakdown. Carry appropriate clothing, minimal tool kit, zip ties and water Be Prepared. See you on the next ride Ride Safe and Have Fun Jim Speedo Larson Lead Road Captain Page 4

15 OFFICERS SPOTLIGHT I will be returning for my third year as your Chapter Secretary. I have been a member since 2010 along with my husband Philippe. I ride behind him on his very clean and shiny 2015 Ultra Limited- ha ha. We have enjoyed so much seeing so many areas of the Southwest thanks to the chapter day rides and over night trips. Please feel free to me anytime if you have any questions about our chapter. Debbie Dartois Hello 2017: I m still wondering where 2016 went! Time flies when you are having fun and here with the SNHOG family, WE HAVE FUN!!! Hi everyone, For those of you that don t know me, I am Beverly Muise-Madrid and I have been the Editor of our newsletter for the past year. I would like to extend a special thanks to Deb Dubois for working so hard in 2016 so that my job was easier. A little about me. I started riding my 07 Deluxe exactly 4 years ago this month and I will say since joining the chapter I have logged most of my miles riding with the chapter. I joined the chapter in August of In December of that year I decided I was going to get more involved. I thought I would try a hand at being the Editor of the newsletter. After all, how hard could the job be! I quickly found out the JOB was more than I had even imagined. Thank goodness I didn t have to go to work because there was no time for a real job. This was my job. I had a newsletter to put out! New colors, shapes, and designs to work on and of course, harass Dirk about his monthly Saddle. FUN FUN FUN Now you would think, after the first 6 or 7 crazy months and 2 different programs to work with later, that I would have this job down solid. Well, think again sister, I lost the completed January newsletter on Christmas Eve. I know it has to be somewhere. Just don t have a clue where. So, I guess I have to spend this next year as your Chapter Editor and figure out where it went. lol I look forward to working with Roddy and the new board throughout I just know it will be a very bright, colorful year. Ride safe, have fun, and read your newsletter. It could mean money for some lucky member!!! Sonya Gale Membership My family moved to Vegas in 1974 when my Dad was stationed at Nellis AFB and have been here ever since. My husband is Terry Gale and we have two children, Kimberly & Steffon. I m currently the Senior Project Account for Burke Construction Group. While our children were growing up, I not only worked full time, but was also a Girl Scout leader for 13 years. Served on the GSFC Aquatics and Wider Opportunities Boards and taught Red Cross canoe certification classes, boating safety and kayaking. I also served 8 years as a Business Manager for Pop Warner Football teams. My Mom, Sister and I still own kayaks and like to go out whenever we can. We ve had several bikes along the way, street bikes, dirt bikes and ATV s, loved those old three wheelers. We bought our first Harley, a C, which very quickly led to the next Harley, Terry s 2005 Road King. I started riding the Sport shortly after. I currently ride a 2014 Heritage and my son is now riding the Sport. We ve been members of HOG since 2005, first with the Black Mountain Chapter and then in 2008 moved to SNHOG. The recession was a bit rough on us so local membership fluctuated, but were always National members. A couple years ago we came back to SNHOG and we re happy to be here. We really enjoy the members of our Chapter and I look forward to being your Membership Officer. Page 15

16 OFFICERS SPOTLIGHT My name is Chester McQuillen. This will be my third year as an Ambassador. I am also one of the Photographers for My main focus will be on group pictures. I will be filling in for Rolando whenever he has other business that keeps him away from the rides. I currently ride a 2016 Ultra Limited. I have also set up a Meetup.com account for members only. This will be a site whereas we can advise other members of non-sanctioned rides of any kind. So look for SNHOG on Meetup and let everyone know when you want to go on a ride. My name is Kathy Roberts. I have lived in Las Vegas for 40 years. I have 4 kids and 3 granddaughters. I have been riding solo for 3 years. I ride a Heritage soft tail. I was never interested in riding a motorcycle until I started riding on the back of my husband Randy's (who is a road captain) bike. I became hooked. I love being involved in the chapter so I volunteered to become the Chapter Treasurer for Hello, My name is Sal Sapien. It's an honor to be your 2017 Assistant Director. A little about myself. I had the opportunity to transfer from Los Angeles Ca to Las Vegas from my old job, so in November of 1999 I did. I started riding motorcycles about 6 yeas ago. My first bike was a Honda Shadow ACE and that's where I found my love for the open road. I enjoyed riding by myself. Then, in 2014 I decided to give myself a Christmas present of a new bike. So I went to Las Vegas Harley-Davidson and I purchase a 2015 Street Glide Special. Not knowing that my new bike was going to change my life. In February of 2015, I joined the chapter and I had no idea of what to expect. However, very quickly I found that new riders become friends, friends become family. My first ride with the chapter was a short one to Laughlin, for the river run. I really didn t know what to expect as I had not ridden with a group before. I ended up loving to ride in a group. In 2016, I turned in my application for an ambassador. I truly enjoy all aspect of being an ambassador. Such as, helping out new members, introducing them to the group, and helping out in any way I could. I personally invite everybody to get more involved with the chapter. Come out and ride more often! I'm looking forward to many more rides and meetings with my new family. I hope you had a great holiday and Happy New Year. Page 16

17 OFFICERS SPOTLIGHT Dirk and I are originally from Spokane WA. We realized once we bought our new bike that we really didn't have any friends or family to ride with. We wanted to make new friends and ride with a group, so in 2010 we paid our membership dues, joined the chapter and got involved. Once we started meeting people and got involved, we both realized the people in this chapter are our Vegas family. I volunteered and became the LOH officer for 2 years. Last year my position was Ambassador/Dirks wife. This year I will be your Activities Officer. Kris Scott did an amazing job in 2016 and I will do my best to keep things like she did. Dirk and I both are looking forward to the riding and all the adventures in Claudia Smith Steve Richey Manager Jay Gordon Photographer Cliff and Joan Bauman Merchandise Rolando Ariano Head Photographer Mel Johanson Photographer Hello my fellow hogs and hoglets!!! I am Nancy DeViese your 2017 LOH Officer...Thank You Suzy Q, for your 2016 support!! I'm excited and looking forward to the events/rides in I will be getting some very welcomed assistance from Erika Watanabe. I look forward to seeing as many of the group as I can this year!!!!
