Hikers going to the McDonalds or gas station minimart at Cajon Pass walk along a section of historic Route 66 [now called Wagon Train Rd] which also runs past a memorial built in 1917 honoring pioneers of the Santa Fe and Salt Lake trails [behind the truck weigh station]. Lake Isabella Post Office [open MF 104; ] Lake Isabella, CA For many hikers, Lake Isabella is the last grocery store for more than 250 miles [except for possibly the small grocery in Lone Pine or the trip out to Bishop]. Bus service runs between Onyx and Lake Isabella and west to the city of Bakersfield. A number of hikers have reported bad experiences at the Kern Motel. The Lake Isabella Motel [ ] is the better place to stay. Onyx Lake Isabella Kennedy Meadows is a small hikerfriendly community 1/2 mile east of the PCT. Muir Trail Ranch is a private guest ranch 1.5 miles NW of PCT that accepts hiker resupply packages and sells a few emergency supplies. Packages are delivered to the ranch via pack animals. The Lodge does not accept resupply packages but the Soda Springs Post Office is 1.9 miles away and has a small store. The Dinsmores no longer accept hiker packages or mail. All mail will need to be General Delivery to the Skykomish Post Office. They now have a NO ALCOHOL policy.
