Hammond, Assoc. Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, FGCU Friday, March 26 Called the Grandfather of EE in Florida, Bill inspires environmental educators throughout Florida through his teaching, service, and scholarly activities. This year, Bill will be providing a keynote speech on our theme, Staying True to Our Roots and our home base, the Everglades. David Stokes, Naturalist, Humorist and Educator Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28 David Stokes is singer-songwriter of your favorite nature songs: Bats Eat Bugs, Dirt Made my Lunch, Scat Rap and Habitat. Join us Saturday night for live edutainment as David sings, makes us laugh and engages us in nature study. Using live creatures, animal artifacts, songs and short stories, David makes learning fun. On Sunday morning, join David as he shares some techniques to entertain while educating about nature study. Friday, March 26 FIELD TRIPS Plan to carpool to all trips. A bag lunch and water will be provided for all morning trips. Most trips are minutes from camp. Don t forget to dress comfortably for the outdoors and bring hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, camera and binoculars. Lake Okeechobee The Good, Bad and Ugly Michael Boles, Army Corps of Engineers Biologist Limit 10 8:00 am 12:00 pm (Meet at camp 7:45 am to carpool.) Fee: $15 With over 100,000 acres of marshland, Lake Okeechobee is a bonanza of plant and animal life. Equally abundant are environmental issues such as water quality, hydrology and invasive species. Take a pontoon boat tour for an introduction to this magnificent resource and increase your knowledge of the challenges faced by this multi-purpose system. STA 5 Birding Extravaganza Sally McPherson, Outreach Specialist, SFWMD Limit 25 8:00 am 12:00 pm (Meet at camp 7:45 am to carpool.) Fee: $15 The storm-water treatment areas, owned and operated by the South Florida Water Management District, are vast, constructed wetlands that use vegetation to cleanse excess nutrients from water before it enters the Everglades. These remote, shallow-water marshes have 170 species of birds documented there. Learn about the science of storm-water treatment areas and why people come from all over the world to study this technology. Come to see the feathered splendor. This is the best birding trip ever even if you are not a birder! Meet at the Clewiston Inn at 8:00 am. Be prepared for a long, dusty gravel road. Walk in the Past - Clewiston Museum/Fort Center Hike Butch Wilson, Museum Curator Limit 20 8:30 am 1:00 pm (Meet at camp 8:15 am to carpool.) Fee: $17 Take a Walk in the Past with Museum director, Butch Wilson as he guides you through the Clewiston Museum. The tour will include fossil displays of prehistoric animals that roamed the Everglades, a history of Lake Okeechobee, the Seminoles and heritage artifacts of Clewiston. A program on indigenous people that inhabited the Lake Okeechobee region will also be presented in the museum theater. Travel to Fort Center for a three-mile round trip hike through ancient Indian mounds, past ponds, circular ditches and linear embankments built over 2000 years ago. End up on the shores of Fisheating Creek, where the Seminole era Fort Center once stood. Meet at the Museum at 8:30 am. Panther Bike Ride at Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest Lisa Andrews, Outreach/Educ. Specialist Big Cypress Natl. Pres. Limit 15 8:30 am - 1:30 pm (Meet at camp 8:00 am to carpool.) Fee: $15 The 32,039 acre Okaloacoochee Slough located within Hendry and Collier Counties is comprised of eight pristine and distinct natural communities. This unique natural system provides a large contiguous habitat for a variety of wildlife including our most endangered species, the Florida Panther. Take a leisurely bike ride through the forest while stopping at several stations to learn about the Florida Panther, natural history, habitat use, management strategies, radio-telemetry and capture techniques. Bring your own hybrid or mountain bike. Helmet required. Swamp Buggy Tour of Dinner Island Ranch Wildlife Management Area Justin Nolte, FFWCC Biologist Limit 12 each tour 10:00 am - 12:00 pm (Meet at camp 9:30 am to carpool.) Fee: $15(w/ lunch) 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm (meet at camp 1:30 pm to carpool.) Fee: $5(w/out lunch) Participants will see some of Dinner Island s thirty-four square miles of pastures, sloughs, pine flatwoods and oak hammocks that form a vital link to surrounding wetlands connecting the Caloosahatchee River with the Big Cypress Swamp. Kestrels, sandhill cranes, caracaras, wood storks, deer and turkeys are common sights along the network of graded roads and trails open for wildlife viewing, hunting, cycling, horseback riding and hiking. Swamp Buggy Tour of Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area Grant Steelman, FFWCC Biologist Limit 10 8:30 am - 12:30 pm (Meet at camp 8:00 am to carpool.) Fee: $15 Fisheating Creek WMA stretches 40 miles along the only free-flowing tributary to Lake Okeechobee. Journey into the past, as you travel to the heart of Fisheating Creek by swamp buggy. This 3-hour route winds through wet/dry prairie, freshwater marsh, restored mesic hammock/freshwater marsh, and along the creek channel to see alligators in one hole, caracaras, possible bald eagles, turkey and deer. WORKSHOPS Workshops will be cancelled if minimum requirement not met by Friday, March 19. Early Childhood EE Programs-NAAEE Guidelines for Excellence Workshop Bora Simmons, NAAEE Guidelines Trainer Limit 20 9:00 am 4:00 pm No Fee Participants will learn how to use the Early Childhood Guidelines to strengthen and bring EE into their programs in this one-day workshop. Participants will use the guidelines as a tool to evaluate quality EE materials from Project WILD, Project Learning Tree and Everglades ABC s to show how hands-on activities can help youth explore nature. Participants will receive Guidelines for Excellence in EE books, Growing Up WILD, Project Learning Tree Early Learning Guide and the Everglades ABCs guide. This workshop is paid for by a generous donation from the North America Association for Environmental Education. Flying WILD Workshop Dawn Hurley and Megan Auchter, Brevard Zoo Minimum 12 1:00 pm 5:00 pm Fee: $5 This program introduces students to bird conservation through classroom activities and school bird festivals. It supports educators by providing interdisciplinary, standards-based opportunities to engage students in real-world learning that helps them understand the importance of migratory birds and their conservation. The workshop will consist of three parts: overview of program, mini bird festival activities from guide, and festival planning. Growing Up WILD Workshop Florida Fish and Wildlife Consv. Comm. Volunteers Minimum 12 1:00 pm 5:00 pm Fee: $5 Project WILD s NEW! early childhood guide for connecting young children to nature has a wide range of activities and experiences designed for children ages 3-7. Growing Up WILD provides an early foundation for developing positive impressions about nature and lifelong social and academic skills. Educators will receive Growing Up WILD materials, experience activities first-hand and discover how to connect young children to nature.
