5 When this slide was shown at the Yorkshire in Bloom Awards Ceremony, a cheer went up from Table 10. This is where six members of Hutton Cranswick in Bloom were seated along with the Chairman of the East Riding Council, Peter Turner, and Martin Burnhill, Facilities & Service Manager for Sewerby Hall & Gardens. Gina Simpson, Coordinator of Village in Bloom, had already received the Gold Award from Helen Bainbridge. (Right) Helen is a well-known horticulturist who has received many gold awards for her own exhibits. Earlier this year she was awarded The Harlow Carr Medal for her significant contributions to horticulture in the North of England. In her opening remarks to the 375 delegates present, Helen stressed the importance of In Bloom and community groups working together and passing on knowledge and expertise. At this year s awards, there were 43 entries in the It s Your Neighbourhood section. This is a element of the In Bloom campaign that encourages volunteer groups to clean up and enhance the area near where they live. The importance of caring for our environment was detailed in last month s article about Greening Grey Britain. Lots of interesting and informative information can be found in the RHS publication Grass Roots or on the website: ( Grass Roots can be downloaded from the website). In his closing remarks at the awards, Roger Burnett from Scarborough, who was Master of Ceremonies, reminded delegates about Wild About Gardening Week which runs from 26 October until 1 November. This year the focus is on hedgehogs. The RHS has joined with Hedgehog Street a campaign run by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society to work towards halting the decline in this important species. any style of garden can be hedgehog-friendly, and what s good for hedgehogs, is good for everything else. (Grass Roots, Summer 2015) A hedgehog enjoys a portion of cat food! Congratulations to all the Special Category Entries! (YiB Judges, 2015). Visit: 5 Can you help in 2016? To continue with the In Bloom campaign, ViB will need more hands-on support in the coming years. A meeting will be held on 21 September to review this year s results and plan for the future. As part of this process, we hope to detail specific requirements so that volunteers can more easily identify where their skill may be put to good use look out for more information in the November Bulletin or to express an interest contact Gina Simpson on ; ginasimpson@btinternet.com Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless but because they are priceless.

Some of these make me laugh and some of them make me think. Here is something that I received recently that I would like to share with you. A church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. 'I've gone for 30 years now,' he wrote, 'and in that time I have heard something like three thousand sermons, but for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the priests are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.' This started a real controversy in the 'Letters to the Editor' column. Much to the delight of the editor, it went on for weeks until someone wrote this: 'I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some thirty two thousand meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this; they all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today! When you are DOWN to nothing...god is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment! With best wishes, Brian 7

9 Hutton Cranswick Methodist Church Minister : Rev d Robert Amos Sunday Service Cranswick Inter-Church Prayer Fellowship Mondays 9.30 am at 13a Orchard Lane God s Secret Listener Chain of Events In 1972 Barbara Jamieson, an English woman originally from Bridlington, was working in Vienna and invited a young ethnic Albanian man from Kosovo to church. After a few weeks Sali Rahmani became a Christian and the following year ECM (the European Christian Mission) sponsored him to come to England to spend a year at their headquarters and then to go to Bible College in Berwick-upon-Tweed. The day Sali arrived in England another Albanian man, Alfred Andoni, died. Alfred had been employed by ECM in 1968 to send Christian messages into Albania by radio a year after the leader, Enver Hoxha, had announced that they had abolished God and were the word s first atheistic state. Sali took up the baton and began broadcasting 15 minute programmes once a week and eventually every day into Albania. The Christian broadcasting work of ECM expanded in the 1960s and 1970s and letters flowed in from every country apart from Albania. No one knew whether anyone in Albania was listening. The first letter for Sali arrived 18 years after he had begun broadcasting, when Albania had started to open up. It was from a widower who had been listening in secret in his cellar with his 10-year-old daughter. Another secret listener was Captain Dosti. He was an expert in radios and communications and his job in the army was to scan the airwaves for any hint of an enemy invasion. He came across Sali s radio programme and started listening once a week. Eventually he wrote and asked for a Bible and then did a correspondence course. A few years later after several other jobs, Berti Dosti became the full-time pastor of a young growing church. In 1998, when half a million refugees fled to Albania from neighbouring Kosovo, Berti took a lead in co-ordinating the churches relief work for which they were thanked by aid agencies, government officials and the president. His other projects have included setting up a school, helping disabled people and helping to broadcast Christian radio programmes within Albania. They use the same frequency Enver Hoxha s regime used to send out their atheistic messages 30 years ago. 11 To raise money we have had an amazing raffle, bag packed in Tesco, had a Bake Sale and held a Fun Day in the village. We have also held a community craft session in the street to make a mobile for Charlie s sensory room with Charlie and his family and the best bit is we have raised awareness of Autism and Haemophillia by encouraging Charlie s mum to make a Facebook page called Charlie s Shenanigans Our 10 yr old girls have taken part in the Lifestyle Challenge run by the Humberside Police. They have spent the summer raising money for Charlie a local 7 yr old boy who has many medical issues, a worthy young boy. Their aim was to raise 300 to send Charlie and his family on a holiday to Filey. With your help and the generosity of others and lots of hard work!, they actually raised an amazing , plus a holiday to Blue Dolphin in Filey and some football tickets and stadium tour!!! The family were so happy, they were speechless and couldn t thank us enough and have said the money will go towards improving Charlie s Sensory room. This project became much more than raising money, the girls also held a community craft session in the street to produce a sensory mobile for Charlie and have also encouraged Charlie s mum to set up a community page on facebook called Charlie s shenanigans to continue to raise awareness of Autism and Haemophilia and as a support network for others experiencing similar issues. The support from our community has been amazing and this project has been a job well done by all, Thanks again. Helen, Toni and Sarah (Parents of The Fab Four ) Sports & Recreation Association Mike Wardell has stepped down from his role as Chairman at the SRA after seven years and has taken on the job of secretary for the next twelve months. 13 A celebration of cycling Saturday 19 th September Wheels across the Wolds On a perfect day for cycling warm, sunny (but not too hot), light winds a small group of cyclists enjoyed a leisurely ride from Hutton Cranswick to Etton and back, with a stop for lunch at The Light Dragoon. Organised as part of the Wolds Walking and Outdoor Festival, the event was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the 20 th anniversary of the National Cycle Network. Participants from as far afield as Hull, Harrogate and Aberdeen (!) were impressed by what the Wolds has to offer cyclists quiet roads, picturesque villages and scenic views. The route was mainly on local sections of the National Cycle Network, developed and maintained by the national cycling charity Sustrans, passing through the villages of Kilnwick, Lockington and South Dalton. The event was organised and led by local Sustrans volunteers ( ), who give their time freely to help maintain the Network. Grateful thanks to Ray and Carolyn Sharpe of Cranswick Garden Centre ( for use of their facilities; also to Leigh Tovey ( ) for standing by with a recovery vehicle (fortunately not required!). Notes:- 1. This year, Sustrans celebrates the 20 th anniversary of the National Cycle Network, of which three major routes now converge on Hutton Cranswick. 2. The Wolds Walking and Outdoor Festival is now an annual event, organised in September by VHEY ( Marathon Fund Raiser! Whilst we re on the subject of cycling, village resident John Nolan, together with a group of friends, completed the Way of the Roses cycle ride from Morecmbe to Bridlington just a week after completing the Hull Marathon. The Way of the Roses cycle route covers a staggering 170 miles which they completed in one weekend. John did these events in order to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Trust in memory of his father who died from cancer earlier this year and their efforts raised total of Well done John and friends! 16 News from the Avenues Bicycle Project As you can see from the photograph were back in business after our summer break. Our aim is to send one container of up to 400 refurbished bikes a year to West Africa. We have sent over 1600 bikes since Once the bikes reach West Africa they are distributed by our partners, The Village Bicycle Project, to farmers, health workers, school teachers, students and school children who are living, working and studying in rural areas. We are currently collecting bikes for shipment to Sierra Leone in early You may think the bikes in the photo look a little small to be useful in West Africa, and that is often the case, but a bike is a bike and can always make a difference to someone. A couple of weeks ago Dean and Gary from Child Dynamix picked up seven pre school bikes from the Avenues Bicycle Project. The bikes, donated by members of the public in Hull, Hutton Cranswick and Newcastle, had been checked over by young people and staff at Push Iron to make sure they were safe to ride. Dean and Gary took the bikes to Hoggle Doggle, a children's charity based on the Greatfield estate in East Hull, where children in the play centre will get to ride them, as well as social workers taking them to children whose parents would not ordinarily afford to buy a bike for them. If you have a bike you no longer need you can get in touch with me on or through The Bulletin address. It may often make a difference to someone else! 17 A New Village Facility for ALL!! We are delighted to report that we now have the opportunity to create a Village Hub style facility within St Peter s Church for everyone in the village to take advantage of and which, hopefully, will supplement the excellent work already carried out by other organisations within the village. To finalise our plans we need to apply for external funding to supplement funds we have already raised and, to do this, we need evidence to support the need for such a facility. We need your views and thoughts as to the uses you feel could be made of this facility by all in our community. St Peter s Church also recognises that some of the over 50s in our village experience feelings of isolation and loneliness, due to the lack of opportunities in the community for individuals to come together in a social and supportive environment. We want to encourage individuals to support each other, form new friendships and develop a feeling of worth, particularly amongst those whose life experiences and talents are so very valuable. We really need your opinions as to the kind of activities you would like to see in Hutton Cranswick, your ideas on how we can reach out to all in our community and how we can best make community activities accessible for all. Can we ask you to please fill in the short tear off slip below (please use a separate sheet if necessary) and return it to Linda Ellis at 20 Mill Street, Hutton. Alternatively, if you would like us to help you fill it in or just to simply pick it up from you, once completed, please call to arrange.. Would you be interested in taking part in activities arranged for your age group? Yes/No Would you be interested in taking part in activities arranged for the over 50s? Yes/No If you answered Yes to either question above, some suggestions we have already include: Book Club, Knit & Natter, Pilates, Basic Computing, Family History, Afternoon Film Club, Whist/Cards, Art/Painting, Using Skype, Trips to Places of Interest, Coffee Mornings etc. This list is by no means exhaustive and we are looking to add your ideas. Please add your ideas here.... How can we ensure we involve all in our community?... And the over 50s specifically?..... Any other thoughts? If you would like us to contact you please add your name and contact details below Name & Address (please print) Tel No. Arrangements have now been made for you to return your completed slip to The Spar Shop or the White Horse. We are also looking for people who could give a lift to a friend to any of the various activities in the village, or to church services on a Sunday. If so, please phone Linda on

21 Matthew Lock recently spent some time in Ghana working with under-priviledged young people. Today he dropped a letter through our letter box and I thought it would be interesting to share an extract... Whilst out in Ghana I spent Monday to Friday teaching at several schools which included Sunrise, Obemeng and Tunasi. Between 8.30 am till 2.00 pm I would teach year olds Mathematics, English and Ghanaian civil rights and women s rights in t he country. Without donated resources like pens, paper and colours, I would not have been able to break down the language barrier and successfully educate the children in a hands on approach. From 2.00 pm until 6.00 pm was t he time that I either delivered my rugby coaching in the friendly communities or, for the last week, built toilet blocks at Obomeng School. The story goes that whilst I spent more time in the school I grew closer to the teachers, the children and the community as a whole. This turned into a desire to do something completely worthwhile for them and with everyone s donations, which amounted to 200, this funded the resources and equipment needed to build the toilet block. When socialising in the communities, whilst playing for Twenedurase XI football team, I met a young man named Quasi who has brilliant skills in building and decorating but was unfortunate not to have a job in any of the major cities or towns because of lack of references. With the budget I had, I was able to pay him four weeks wages to work with myself and some other volunteers who wanted to help me out. Following the first week s work I wrote a letter of recommendation explaining the project and how impressed we were with Quasi, he then gave it to one of the major building companies in Mpraeso, which was the major town near us. After receiving the letter somebody came down to look at his work and offered Quasi a full time job with them, so thanks to the generosity of those who donated towards the project, a talented young individual has been put into work. The logo used by these organisations is nothing like the logo used by Cranswick PLC as was thought at the last meeting. A coat of arms was also suggested. Action The clerk is to send out to councillors an image of the In Bloom logo minus the flowers which are included in the logo. The clerk is also to enquire about a coat of arms. d) Carbon Capture Scheme NGC required further information as regards the ownership and any other use of the allotments. To submit the below from ERYC s Will Park, Principal Highway Management Officer as regards the access road to rear of Cranswick Green in response the letter sent regarding ownership issues and pertinent uses I have once again contacted my colleague Dave England, Area Manager, Streetscene Services (Highways) regarding the content of the attachment so that I can compile a comprehensive reply. This will be our last response to these issues as both the Area Manager and myself have stated the Council's Highway Authority stance previously and continuing to repeat the reasons would be futile. Paragraph 2 & 3. The Parish Council appear to accept that there is a public highway to the south of the Green, consequently as they state the Green is situated on ''land north of the public highway'' the proposals should not ''cause injury to the land'' or ''disturb and/or interfere with the soil of the Green''. In paragraph 4 the statement '' strip of land to the south of the public highway'' is public highway verge - we do not dispute ownership as it is irrelevant. The Highway Authorities copies of the historical village green - and highway maintenance records - clearly define the adopted status of this track and adjacent verge. As we have previously stated, highway public use rights and Local Authority statutory maintenance duties overrule any ownership rights ''two spits deep/right to pass and repass'' is the adage. In regard to the statement in paragraph 5 this is irrelevant as no one requires easement rights upon a public highway. Finally I have attached again Plan 1 of the original village green record plan held by the Council's legal team that clearly shows the route in question and Hobman Lane. Several paths across the Green are definitely not part of the registration that is why the Highway Authority maintain them with no objections from the Parish Council. The 1977 Register above the plan confirms the parish Council did not actually have to claim the majority of the land within the red line on Plan 2 as they already owned it! However, under title YEA that have now claimed sub soil ownership beyond the Village Green under the route in question and the cross paths, it does not however alter their Highway Maintainable status and public rights over these areas. The area covered in the absolute title which the PC was granted last year encompasses the access road in question. The absolute title YEA year is a legal document and unless the title is challenged the land as documented with Land Registry is under the ownership of the parish council. Action The parish council are to make more enquiries and continue to pursue the matter.
