1 Guisborough U3A September/October 2017 Newsletter NewsletterNewsletter Secretary s Blog Hello GU3A members, Welcome to our September/October 2017 Newsletter As our activities are up and running after a short break I thought I would mention a discussion the committee had recently. Many of you will have noticed that more and more information is available via our website, u3asites.org.uk/guisborough Thanks to contributors from across our U3A and of course Bernard and Rod our website facilitators who add them to the website. It enables us to keep in touch with members by providing up-to-date information in all aspects of the organisation and for people to contact our U3A. It also gives access to the regional (Northumbria) and national (Third Age Trust) publications and notices. Hence, the committee were wondering if some of you might like to attend a short but informative guided tour around the website. Bernard and Rod have kindly volunteered to take this but first I thought it a good idea to get some feedback as to whether you would find this useful. You can catch me or any of the committee members at the monthly meeting or you can me. We have a vibrant membership and as you may have noticed from the June minutes there are 44 new members so far this year making a total of 517. This I think you ll agree makes having and using the website an excellent form of communication. Best wishes Carol (Sec) carol_williams.63@hotmail.co.uk ************************************************* Cookery We're all so grateful to Gwynneth for her time and patience over the last few years helping us to produce lots of delicious dinners and cakes and now we're hoping someone will take over the running of the Cookery class. We are an easygoing group where we all share ideas and help each other. Evelyn Proudfoot Next GU3A get-togethers are on October 4 th and November 1st
2 Art Appreciation Thursday, 28 th September York Museum 23 including entry Vikings: Rediscover the Legend Featuring the most significant Anglo-Saxon and Viking discoveries ever made. From British Museum and York Museums. Thursday, 26 th October Sunderland Glass Centre 16 Demonstration of Glass Blowing 12 a.m. Exhibition of Jewellery in Glass.. Anne Merrick Painting India The Art Appreciation's July trip was to the Hepworth in Wakefield. Their major new exhibition was Howard Hodgkin: Painting India. He died earlier this year but had helped to choose the selection showing the enduring influence the country had on him over 50 years. The colour and warmth of India was captured, though the impressionistic nature of much of the work did not appeal to us all! I was moved by a 1940 print and drawing exhibition "Approaching Thunder". Much of the work, produced after the war, was in black and white. The Hepworth and Henry Moore galleries are always a delight. The museum was the worthy winner of the Art Fund Museum of the Year Thanks to Anne Merrick for her usual impeccable organisation of an entertaining and thought-provoking day. Cath Harrap... Nature 2017 The group has followed the burst of nature from April to July visiting a variety of sites from Skinningrove on the coast to Bowesfield on The Tees. Unusually, we have enjoyed some lovely weather for our walks and identified around 200 species of flowering plants and 50 types of tree. We have seen some spectacular swathes of flowers. The orchids were particularly good at Skinningrove with more fragrant orchids than previously as well as thousands of pyramidal and spotted orchids.
3 My thanks go to Pam Rayment and Margaret Wallen for all their excellent photos. The ones included here are teasel, bee orchid, pyramidal orchid and sea holly. We are now going into hibernation until next spring. Kath Corbett. 4 Talks and Walks Group 2017 During this year our guided walks have been around Prior Pursglove Archives, Skelton old church and castle, Skinningrove, Loftus, Marske and Hartlepool. Grateful thanks go to our wonderful guides Sally Smith, Anthony Wharton, Peter Appleton, John Roberts, Marshall Best and Peter Graves. Our talks programme is: Friday, October 13 th Brian Lake Flora and Fauna of the North York Moors Friday, November 10 th Joyce Scott The Rocky Shores of Cleveland Friday, December 8 th Martin Allen Wild Flowers of Cleveland Tai Chi The talks take place in the Methodist Hall, Westgate from a.m. Refreshments are served from 10 a.m. Admission 2 All members and prospective members of GU3A and SDU3A are very welcome to join us... The British Health Qi Gong Association (BHQA) invited Tai Chi/Qi Gong groups across their network to participate in the first World Health Qi Gong Day scheduled for 13th August Leaders of Saltburn, Guisborough and Stokesley U3A Tai Chi Groups got together with Tony Broder the local BHQA member and arranged a joint event. 21 members from the local U3A Associations celebrated the first World Qi Gong day on a glorious sunny morning at Zetland Park, Redcar. Sally Eccleshall led an invigorating warm up. Tony took the group through 12 Method Health Qi Gong, and Dorothy Poole led a Ba Duan Jin session. Sally closed the event in a circle and then everyone was invited to have a cooling drink, kindly provided by Tony and his wife. It was much appreciated on a lovely sunny morning by the seaside. Many participants said they enjoyed the event and several asked for more. Over 40 countries and regions participated. The Chinese Health Qi Gong Association have asked their British partner to share comments and photographs of the events held across Britain. We have duly shared our own small contribution. Dorothy and John Poole
