1 Goodyear Ski Club, Akron OH Ski News October 2014 President s Report Greetings, fellow ski club members! Fall is here, and we are quickly approaching the start of ski season. We have many activities planned for the next few months, so do your best to join us. As always, one of the first events of the fall is the annual Goodyear Ski Club Swap Shop at Buckeye Sports Center on October 2-5. For those who are new to the Club, this is a venue for snow sports enthusiasts to buy and sell their clothing and equipment. If someone is selling something, the proceeds are distributed as such: 80% to the seller, 10% to the Beacon Journal Charity Fund, and 10% to the Goodyear Ski Club. This a great way to get rid of items you are no longer using, but please be aware that we cannot accept straight skis or helmets for sale, and there are restrictions on the age of ski bindings. A list will be on hand to determine which bindings are acceptable. Anyone wishing to help out by volunteering, please contact me or just come up during the swap. Any help will be appreciated. The flyer is in this month s newsletter, showing the hours. The new Warren Miller movie, No Turning Back, will be shown at the Akron Civic Theatre on November 22. Tickets are $15 at the door the night of the show, but I will be getting some tickets at the group rate, and will sell them for $10. Please come to our October or November meetings; I will have tickets available for purchase then. This movie always seems to draw well, and CMSC has a raffle drawing at intermission; you never know what you might win!! It s a great way to get primed for the upcoming season. We are still in the consideration stage for the December trip to Stowe, Vermont. Frankly, we have not gotten enough people yet to make this trip happen. If anyone who has not already contacted me is interested, time is running out. Please let me know by October 10 if you would like to go. The flyer is also in this Newsletter. 2 And for those planning ahead, this year s Holiday Party is Tuesday, December 9, and will be held at the Houston Pub as it was last year. We are working on getting some great prizes for the raffle. If anyone would like to sell tickets this year, please see me at the Swap Shop, or the October/November meetings. We will provide the main course for the party, but if anyone can bring a side dish or dessert, it would be appreciated. And finally, once the Swap Shop is over and things settle down a little, we will be accepting volunteers for the Constitution Committee. If anyone is interested, please let me know. We will be reviewing the Constitution to determine whether or not any revisions should be made. As always, be safe and enjoy the great weather we ve been having. Chris Gifford, President Stowe Train Trip Proposal December 11-15, 2014 Would you be interested in the following trip? Please let us know what you think; we value your input. This is not a commitment, just an indication of interest. Goodyear Ski Club is investigating a joint trip with Stark County Ski Club (formerly Timken Ski Club) to Stowe, Vermont. The dates are December 11-15, 2014, Thursday-Sunday, returning early Monday morning. We would be traveling Thursday and Sunday evening, and skiing Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Includes: Transportation between Canton/Akron and the Amtrak train station in Cleveland, OH (roundtrip) Amtrak train (Lakeshore Limited) between Cleveland, OH and Schenectady, NY (roundtrip) Motor coach between Schenectady, NY and Stowe, VT (roundtrip) Lodging at the Commodore Hotel in Stowe (2 per room) with breakfast daily One group dinner at the Commodore Hotel 3-Day lift ticket at Stowe (optional day at Jay Peak for $15 more if enough people are interested) Train baggage and bus tips are included. The Commodore Hotel is close to quaint, historic downtown Stowe. It s an easy walk to other restaurants, shops, and places of interest. We will have our bus with us for the duration; we can explore as we wish. We will have time in Schenectady, both going and coming home, to have food and libation. There are several options near the train depot; there s no need to rush a meal at Stowe prior to departure. The price depends on the number of people committed: At 30 people, the cost would be $675 At 40 people, the cost would be $619 Should we pursue this? Please send your yes or no response to presidentgsci@gmail.com. Again, this is not a commitment! It is only an indication of interest. Chris Gifford 2

7 Fall Bike Ride Hosted by Helga and Lothar Beke September 27 was a beautiful fall Saturday, not a cloud in the sky and sunshine all day. The temperature was a little chilly at first but got warm as the day went on. We met at the Fredericksburg Elementary School at 9 a.m. and got ready for a wonderful bike ride in Amish country. First all twenty two of us got into a group for a photo and then headed out on our excursion. The bike trail is really nice; it s paved all the way from Fredericksburg to Killbuck. We shared it with the horse and buggies in the different communities we rode through. Since the weather was cooperating, it was quite a busy trail all day long with bikers and people jogging and walking. The scenery along the way was really pretty with the fall leaves starting to change colors. There was a nice stopping point that had a rest area to catch a breather before going on the rest of the way. Most of the group continued on to Killbuck and then turned around and headed back. Others decided that the depot stop was enough and turned around to head back to Fredericksburg. The ride was a success for all; we all made it back in one piece, and there was only one mishap between Teresa Gifford and Les Wise at the end. Both got a little scuffed up, but in the end, it was not too bad. After the ride was over, Helga and Lothar had prepared a nice lunch at their house. We had a variety of grilled sausages, with German potato salad and delicious cucumber salad to go with them, along with some chips and dip. Dessert was one of my favorites, apple kuchen, with coffee. We all enjoyed the lunch along with chatting about the ride and upcoming events with the ski club. I want to thank Helga and Lothar for such a wonderful day on the bike trail along with the delicious lunch they provided. If you are ever in Holmes County and want to take a great bike ride, this is the place to be! Teresa Gifford 7
