When viewing the beautiful and macabre images of these often-shunned ladies, it s easy to understand why The Sideshow Brides chose them as their namesake. The haunting tunes that The Brides create, along with their deep lyrics concerning small-town happenings bring about a feel that has been musically compared to the likes of Tom Waits; moving and beautifully disturbing. Now, The Brides are working on their much-anticipated debut album that will hopefully be released in the early half of The Sideshow Brides reside in Melbourne, but hail from the town of Aberdeen in the Upper Hunter Valley. It was here that they received most of the influence for their music and lyrics, from both their creative family and the environment surrounding them. Both our parents played music, say the sisters, and we grew up listening to a fairly eclectic vinyl collection. They go on to comment on the abundant cornucopia of tales to be uncovered within the small town of Aberdeen where they spent their childhoods. There are so many stories little towns can tell. Anyone that has ever lived or grown up in one would understand that there is always a lot more beneath the surface. Good and bad! Put these tales to music and you have what has been described as The Brides delivering twisted tales of love and death while drinking whiskey in their Sunday dresses. 3 what s on Aberdeen brides married to their music Continued from page 2. The Brides strongly feel that the reason their sound is so unique is due to the blood-tie between them. It s kind of an unspoken understanding of each other. The Brides agree, Connecting and harmonising on songs is very important when performing and writing together so it helps to be on the same wavelength and click without necessarily having a conversation about it. It became obvious from the very beginning when the sisters started out providing backing vocals for Dallas Crane (a support act for the likes of Cold Chisel and later, Lynyrd Skynyrd) that the duo could easily stand on their own two feet as an act and the sisterly chemistry that buzzes between them is a strong element that drives their creative flow. Performing backing vocals for Dallas Crane and also recently on an album with Dan Brodie, had apparently wet the appetites of The Brides and heightened their anticipation and eagerness to become involved in bigger things. The Brides have a lot of big plans ahead. But it will all start with the release of their debut album that they are currently working on. The sisters say that this album will be a bold new territory for them as they delve into deeper and darker realms of the human emotional psyche. They plan to make it more roots-based and bring to the surface all the grittiness that goes along with the scars of love, loss and heartache and discovering the peace once the smoke has cleared. There are also plans of shows and travel ahead, with talks of a stint in East Nashville, Tennessee USA. The Brides hope to play, record and just plainly immerse themselves in all the opportunities and experiences East Nashville has to offer. The Brides have already begun their Nashville take-over, having already established some very strong connections in the Country Music Capital. One of the more prominent being Elizabeth Cook. We opened for Elizabeth Cook when she toured here in She s such an amazing entertainer. She hosts her own radio program called Elizabeth Cook s Apron Strings on Sirius XM Outlaw country channel. The sisters continue, Shows like hers, The Eldon Thacker Show and IAMS.org are very important to small bands such as we who aren t your typical Australian country music therefore don t get the commercial coverage and exposure needed to get your name out there. These US stations have a larger platform for Americana-based artists and getting airplay on these has given us a wider international audience. The Brides popular self-titled EP is a regular feature on Elizabeth s program. Images: [Page 2 and 3] Left to Right - Layla and Rhianna Fibbins are The Sideshow Brides. 4 creative arts Prestigious art prize benefits community By Rebecca Jenkins Hidden deep within the depths of rural NSW, there is a myriad of talented unknown artists just waiting to be noticed and recognised by their peers and authorities within the realms of the creative arts scene. More and more methods of exposure for these artists are surfacing. One gathering in popularity and prestige is none other than the Coal & Allied Singleton Art Prize. This year, with over 800 entrants, an ever-growing, large public interest and quite impressive prize pool, the Coal & Allied Singleton Art Prize is certainly proving why it s becoming a prominent leader in the quest to expose talented up-coming creatives. Thirty-two years young the Coal & Allied Singleton Art Prize is organised and run by the Singleton Rotary Committee. Being a community-based organisation the committee has stated its goals with the Art Prize as being to provide a service to the Singleton community, facilitate a growing appreciation of art and support and raise funds in an effort to dig up many talented artists in need of exposure. Because of the amount of volunteer work and sponsorship that goes into such a big project, not only has well over $80,000 been raised and used for community projects over the last five years alone, but the collective prize pool for the Art Prize has hit $18,500 this year. The main prize winner will receive a large monetary award of $5,000 for their creative stylings! The Coal & Allied Singleton Art Prize will display well over 800 paintings and drawings within the walls of the Singleton Civic Theatre. Simultaneously will also be the Hunter Region s Sculpture Exhibition that will be held at the Sisters of Mercy Convent. Here the1500-plus visitors that are expected to pass through both exhibits will be able to view art of a more-three-dimensional nature with a range of mediums in use. To top it all off, Lisa Kinna and the Terence Koo Trio will be filling the air with some well-rounded jazz beats at Swingin at the Convent on the 20th of July at 2pm The Art Prize will be judged by watercolour landscape artist Terry Jarvis. THE WAYFARER MOTEL New England Highway, Muswellbrook Muswellbrook s only 24-hour check-in motel Room service available for breakfasts, home cooked dinners and packed lunches Backing onto golf course Clean, comfortable and affordable 25 air-conditioned rooms Pool and barbecue facility WIFI reception@wayfarermotel.com.au An artist renowned for his smooth depictions of landscapes from all over the world and who has an obvious passion for his work, Terry is also a well-known popular tutor in the arts. This being said, visitors will have the opportunity to partake in a two-day workshop with Terry over the course of the weekend. It s set to sell out fast, so bookings are essential! Once Terry has selected the overall winner, the piece will become a part of the Singleton collection. This collection displays more than 88 works spread throughout the Singleton Library and council offices for the public to enjoy. The crowds for this year s Art Prize are anticipated to be the largest the program has ever seen and with the community benefiting so greatly from the event, it s no wonder why. For a full cultural and artistic experience, take the time to wander through the exhibits of the Coal & Allied Singleton Art Prize and then relax to a beautiful set of toe-tapping jazz. It s an event no art-lover should miss. The exhibition opens on the 18th July and closes the 22nd of July. Opening night will have food and wine at 7pm, with the major prize being announced at 8pm. Grab your family, friends, and anyone that you have fun with because on Saturday October 25, Tyrrell s Vineyard will be housing the fun festival - Jazz in the Vines. This event showcases eight artists and bands at this year s Jazz in the Vines. James Morrison, Leo Sayer, Emma Pask and Lisa Hunt will be all making an appearance and performing. The Australian Army Band, the Rehab Brass Band, the Galapagos Duck and Joe Camilleri and the Black Sorrows will also be performing. James Morrison is a true wizard in the music arts. He has been performing since 1962, and has been playing his first instrument since he was seven. He doesn t just play the trumpet, though; he also plays the trombone, flugelhorn, tuba, piano and a variety of other instruments. Leo Sayer is a British singer-songwriter, musician and entertainer, who is sure to bring life to the party. He has been performing for over four decades, and has released top singles and albums on both sides of the equator. Emma Pask was first discovered by none other than James Morrison during one of his regular visits to high schools when she was only sixteen. She sang with James s band that night and ever since has been touring around the world with James Morrison. Lisa Hunt was born in America and bred in Byron Bay. She has released songs all around the world, both as a singer and a songwriter, and has sold more than a million records. At the Jazz in the Vineyards event, she will be put into the spotlight once more to bless the crowd with her voice. The Australian Army Band is one of the most widely known bands in Australia. Known as Australia s most dynamic jazz band, all of the musicians were active soldiers of the Regular Army. They unite as a big band to promote the works of contemporary composers and arrangers, all while upholding the traditional standards of the swing. The Galapagos Duck along with Joe Camilleri and the Black Sorrows will also be pumping out some great tunes and vibes at this very entertaining event. As always Jazz in the Vines features some of the Hunter s best produce with a stunning range of delicious gourmet and festival foods available all day. There will be fresh seafood, Spanish indulgence, a delicious range of sliders, and the list goes on. You can pre-book a picnic hamper and pick it up on the day, and only for $55 through the website. 8 out & about Annual trivia night raises $6,600 for Westpac Rescue Helicopter The 2014 Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Singleton Trivia Night was recently held and to much joy, the evening provided an incredible $6,600 boost to the local support group s annual fundraising efforts for this vital community service. The Club Singleton auditorium was filled with 245 experienced and not-so-experienced trivia players. The night was made entertaining by many of the teams embracing the request of decorating their tables based on a designated letter of the alphabet, with the superhero squad crowned as the Best Decorated. This was closely followed by disco-fever, army and the zombies. Singleton Support Group spokesperson, Danny Eather, said that once again the group has been blown away by the generosity and support of the Singleton community. Everyone is finding it financially tough at present given the economic downtown within the Hunter and there does not seem to be any change in the foreseeable future, so to raise such a large sum of funds from one evening was amazing, he said. In particular, we would like to express a sincere thank you to all of the local business and individuals that provided prize donations, to Club Singleton for providing the usage of the auditorium free-of-charge and Singleton Sound Solution for assisting with the audio equipment. The combined generosity contributed to a resounding success with all that attended walking away with a smile on their face, irrespective of their team s result, Mr Eather added. The importance of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service was once again highlighted with the parents of a local motorcyclist sharing their personal experience in using the service only 12 months ago. After a high-speed accident on the infamous Putty Road, their son required airlifting to the John Hunter Hospital as a result of his critical injuries. Thankfully their son has since made a full recovery and coincidentally on the day of the trivia night he took his first trip back down the Putty Road on his motorcycle, without incident, Mr Eather recalled. A silent auction, 70 mystery balloons and a lucky 100-club for a sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the vineyards contributed to the evening s total. The $6,600 raised on the night, brings the Singleton Support Group s total to $45,000 for this year. Such funds will ensure that the worldclass rescue helicopter operated by locals for locals is available 24/7, but most importantly, and at times unaware by many, free of charge. The next fundraising event to be held by the local support group will be their inaugural Singleton Golf Day presented by A-Plus Contracting at the Singleton Golf Club on July 27th Experience. Sound advice. Positive outcomes. We think that just about covers it! MUSWELLBROOK Market House ~ 4 Market Street Muswellbrook NSW The Entertainer - Thursday 17th July,

9 equine trend & more Merriwa launches into space Merriwa is set to launch into cyber-space with the unveiling of the new community portal website ( au) at 6:00pm on Thursday, 17 July 2014 at the Upper Hunter Shire Council Chambers in Merriwa. The launch of the Merriwa website will provide an online portal for locals and visitors alike to get up-to-date information on what s happening and what s available in the Merriwa area. It will allow us to share our community with the world, said Kim Fenley, Chair of the Merriwa Website Committee. Upper Hunter Shire Council Mayor Michael Johnsen will be counting down for lift-off at the launch event. Council is proud to be a part of the development of the new Merriwa website, he said. The internet is the first point of call for information for many people these days so this is a great opportunity to showcase information about local businesses, community groups and events. After witnessing the success of a the website in Murrurundi (www. murrurundi.nsw.au), Council s Economic Development & Tourism Committee recommended that similar sites be developed in our other three towns, with Merriwa identified as the first, he said. Council has supported the development of this site with a small financial contribution, however it has been the hard work of a group of volunteers in Merriwa led by Kim Fenley, that has made this project a reality in such a short time. The event will kick off at 6:00pm with the launch of the Merriwa website followed by a demonstration of how to navigate around the site. Light refreshments will be available. Everyone is welcome to come along. For catering purposes please RSVP to Megan Moore on Save a hound at the pound Hundreds of dogs and cats have homes thanks to the work of Upper Hunter Shire Council rangers who manage the animal shelters in Scone, Murrurundi and Merriwa. 10 leisure & lifestyle Hoges goes bush! By Rebecca Jenkins Know as a lovable larrikin with an ocker sense of humour to match, everybody who s anybody has heard of the name Paul Hogan. He s had many faces, churned out many a catch phrase and is a global face to the Australian nation. Now, 30 years after his last regional tour, Paul is set to hit the road again with his Hoges: One Night Only! The Hilarious Truth and Nothing But The Truth. This time around though, we ll be seeing a lot more of the Hoges behind the characters as well as some added stand-up and clips. Hoges has been hailed as a comic genius who is as bold as brass and doesn t shy from controversy. But what a lot fail to see is the man at the core. A man who is remarkably intelligent, socially aware and is all heart. He has torn down many social barriers with his outlandish characters and sketches. One of his more well- known characters that did just that was, of course, Crocodile Dundee. Many remember the positive, easy-going, knife-wielding character as one of the more prominent action heroes of his time. The character has even been described as a cross between Rambo and Chuck Norris. Hoges not only disagrees, but dislikes the notion. The movie scene was screaming out for the movie hero that DOESN T kill 75 people... says Hoges, less of those commandos, terminators, exterminators and squashers. Mick s a good role model. There s no malice in the fellow and he s human. He s not a wimp or sissy just because he doesn t kill people. If that wasn t enough to expose the true heart in Hoges (behind the performer), on the topic of the many advertising campaigns he s taken part in, there s one he regrets above all else...winfield. Yeah, we were encouraging people to smoke. At the time, 1971 or something, they used to say Doctors recommend.. Or 9/10 smokers prefer. We were all being conned. When they put the medical warning in there I said I m going to get out of this! Hoges continues, Young ones were taking up smoking and all going for Winfield. It was a staggering success but I was a drug dealer. But who knew back then? Hoges started of his career in the early seventies when he took part in an interview on A Current Affair. Next thing he knows he s writing, producing and performing his own characters, alongside John Cornell in The Paul Hogan Show. It was here that a lot of his more predominant characters came to life. Hoges has also put a shrimp on the barby for Aussie tourism and made quite a fuss in a ballet concert during one of his many commercials for Fosters in England. Hoges also featured in the miniseries ANZACS, in which writer John Dixon specifically wrote the role Pat Cleary for Hoges. Now, after this lucrative career spanning 40 years, Hoges comments that he was happy to find a reason to head out into the rural parts of Oz again. About 30 years ago I toured the country performing with such acts as Normie Rowe and we had a blast! Then, when I did the movie Charlie and Boots only a few years back, I had the time of my life travelling throughout Australia and immediately started looking for an excuse to do it again... THIS is that excuse! states Hoges, excitedly. Need your advertisement designed... Created and designed by 90 kelly street scone wilkins street muswellbrook Despite where his career and life has taken him, Paul Hogan still holds the admiration of a nation as well as his peers. Many who have worked with him more readily remember the man than the performance. Producer, Dean Murphy beams glowingly about Hoges impending tour. Paul created the most amazing characters. Leo Wanker, Arthur Dunger and, of course, Crocodile Dundee, but none were greater than the character we simply called Hoges. He was one of us, yet he mixed with royalty, held hands with Mike Tyson and hosted the Oscars. It s going to be an hilarious night of entertainment! Paul Hogan is a man that needs to be seen to be believed. Tickets go on sale on the 18th of July and can be purchased at the venue or ticketmaster.com.au Hoges will perform for one night only at: Newcastle Civic Theatre on Sunday, 27th July; Tamworth Town Hall on Tues 29th July; and Narrabri at The Crossing on Wednesday 30th July. Tickets are pinned to sell out fast. Image: Paul Hogan. Aberdeen brides married to their music Continued from page 3. The Sideshow Brides have a promising and lucrative future ahead of them. Already making a firm name for themselves in Melbourne, rural NSW and readily becoming known in East Nashville plus still backing the likes of Dallas Crane as they support major-league bands. The momentum is building for this unique duo and it ll be only a matter of time before they become a household name. They re a different, honest, gritty and well-oiled musical machine that will enthral audiences on a world-wide basis soon enough. But no matter where they may go, their small-town upbringing and the memories belonging to it will always be a part of their music and who they are. 12 local gig guide An Austentayshus act for the Upper Hunter By Rebecca Jenkins For a man who wanted to pave a lucrative career in the fi lm industry, Austen Tayshus certainly made it big as a comedian. With his dark brooding appearance and deep voice, his presence alone is enough to command an audience turning all eyes to him. But then he opens his mouth... Known for his blunt, politically-incorrect and sometimes full-on-humour, Austen is defi nitely not a comedian for the faint at heart, but he puts on a dam good show! Born in New York and raised in Sydney, Austen had big dreams of getting into the fi lm industry. But it was the single 'Australiana' that his good friend Billy Birmingham and he released in 1983 that shot Austen Tayshus to fame of epic proportions. Purely a song made upon Australian puns, it shot to number 1 almost immediately. He began to tour and perform around Australia, New Zealand, Bali, Fiji, UK and the USA, clocking up an amazing 10,000-plus performances in total that has spanned a good thirty years. Austen Tayshus draws most of his material from his background and upbringing. The son of a Hasidic Holocaust survivor, he was raised in an Orthodox Jewish household. It maybe because of this that his humour is often offensive, blunt, politically-challenging and often includes throwing a few good insults into the audience. Austen had had his fi ngers in many pies. From politics to the fi lm industry he was so eager to break into. Austen released one of his more notable fi lms in the late 90s, the award-winning 'INTOLERANCE'. Austen wrote, starred and directed the fi lm that received the Best Film Award at the 1998 Tropicana Film Festival and also scored a Best Actor Award for his own performance in the fi lm. Austen Tayshus has not surprisingly tried his hand at Australian politics. He has run a number of times for seats, starting with the House of Representatives in 2010 for the seat of Warringah and later (never one to mind causing a stir) for the Australian Sex Party. He's taken on the likes of Tony Abbott and Barry O'Farrell in the past, but all roads lead him back to the stage. In August, Muswellbrook had better ready itself as Austen Tayshus will be tearing up the stage with his unique brand of dark humour on Friday 1st August at the Royal Hotel. Tickets are priced at $20 each. For ticket sales and further enquiries contact the hotel on Image: Austen Tayshus.
