Oklahoma Railway Museum, Ltd. Central Oklahoma Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society NARCOA Affiliate Member Volume 53 Issue 6 June 2018 Oklahoma Railway Museum donates Cotton Belt Memorabilia to Arkansas Railroad Museum by Anne Chilton Bob Cossairt and his wife Alma took a road trip in mid-may to Pine Bluff, Arkansas. They delivered five tubs of Cotton Belt memorabilia and B.B. Garrett s letters and personal effects to the Arkansas Railroad Museum, located in the old Cotton Belt shops. In February, A.W. Hines, the new owner of Garrett s Whistle Stop Ranch in Flint, Texas, generously allowed ORM to salvage car parts and memorabilia from the remaining four cars on the ranch before they were scrapped. Bob had contacted Arkansas Railroad Museum about a donation of Cotton Belt objects that the Oklahoma Railway Museum (ORM) had acquired during that trip. Above, The front of the Arkansas Railroad Museum. Below, Elizabeth Mary Gains in one of the museums display areas. She was excited to accept the donation and will be attempting to reunite B.B. s personal effects back to surviving family members. It turns out that Arkansas Railroad Museum s secretary, Elizabeth Mary Gaines, knows the grandchildren of the Garrett family. Her husband and B.B. Garrett joined the military together and worked together over the following years. 2 Page 2 The President s Column For the last several months I have been asking you to help your museum. This month I would like to not ask anything, but to share my thanks for your help. Last year Anne Chilton applied for a grant to the Kirkpatrick family fund to help us grow our endowment fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. The grant was for a 3:1 match of donations to our account. Meaning for every three dollars we raised, they donated a dollar. The grant was awarded, and we had four members step up to donate a total of $30,000! This means that the grant will pay $10,000. Our endowment just increased by $40,000! I want to thank all four of these members, who wish to remain anonymous, for their generosity. You just contributed to the long-term financial stability of the Oklahoma Railway Museum. Our mechanical department has been working overtime this year. Our museum is not static, and it takes a lot of work to keep our equipment (engines and passenger cars) in operating condition and compliant with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA.) This year, all of the equipment we use during our train ride events had brake service due. This involves removing multiple valves, sometimes up to 7-9 per car, inventorying and packaging them for shipment to a service facility. Once serviced and shipped back, the valves are reinstalled, and the equipment tested for functionality. Greg Hall, our Manager of Train Operations and Guy Lynn have been instrumental in ensuring this was accomplished. Many other volunteers helped as well, Terry Birchett, Bob Cook, Natalie Lawson, to name a few. Without their help, we would not be operating our train rides this summer. If you see them next time you are out, give them a word of thanks. Larry Dodd and John Cobb have been working diligently on the Le Flore depot since it arrived in January. Both Larry and John use the museum as a part time site for their motor homes. While on the grounds, not a day goes by that they don t work on some task at the museum. They both are very passionate about moving the restoration of the Le Flore depot forward. Steady progress Oklahoma Railway Museum, Ltd. (405) Officers: Eric Dilbeck, President Bob Nantois, Vice President Drake Rice, Secretary Charles Price, Treasurer Trustees: Terry Birchett Bob Cook Bob Cossairt Larry Dodd Greg Hall Bob Hussey Craig Larson Departments and Staff Train Show Chair Bob Cook Museum Administrator Anne Chilton Volunteer Coordinator/ Membership Chair Amanda Resnick Interim Dispatcher Editor Eric Dilbeck Dispatcher Editors Sharin Wolfe Hayley Enoch Education Chair Steve Kamm has been made and we should see the roof installed by the end of the summer. With help from Greg Hall, Tom Harrison, Bob Cossairt, and Steve Kamm; Larry and John have pushed to ensure the depot project is progressing every week. While these are just three examples of you, our members dedication and helpfulness, there are many more that assist at the museum. Train crew, flaggers, and car hosts are critical to our train ride events, which are our primary source of income. Our grounds maintenance volunteers keep the grounds looking sharp. Our administrative staff, Anne and Amanda, that do too many tasks to list. And all of the members and volunteers who make our museum successful, Thank You. See You On The Rails! 3 Page 3 Current Projects By Eric Dilbeck We currently have several projects in progress at the museum. Arrange time on a Saturday to come out and help. Le Flore Depot (on the north property) Work on the depot continues at a steady pace. John Cobb and Larry Dodd are making progress towards placing the depot on the foundation. Santa Fe Box Car (in the shop building) Work is progressing on this project. Two coats of primer have been applied and the roof has been painted black. Santa Fe 643 Steam Engine (outside on the track) SF 643 is waiting shop time for the curtains and the cab partition to be installed. Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Caboose (outside on the platform) Work continues replacing the outside siding. Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad Inspection Car (in the shop building) This project is near completion. Work is in progress on the generator. The engine compartment needs a coat of paint. Around the Grounds There are plenty of projects and tasks at the museum. See Amanda, our volunteer coordinator, about available projects and volunteer opportunities. Volunteer Spotlight: Bob Nantois By Amanda Resnick Bob Nantois has volunteered with the Oklahoma Railway Museum (ORM) for nine years, and he serves as Vice President. Originally from New York, Bob moved to Oklahoma to attend The University of Oklahoma. He worked as an attorney but is now retired. His interest in trains started with a model train set for his son. His son lost interest, but he didn t. He joined the museum after volunteering for Day Out with Thomas as a member of COMRail Train Club. He likes volunteering at ORM among our dedicated members, and he enjoys the camaraderie among our volunteers. The Oklahoma Railway Museum greatly benefits from Bob s expertise and dedication to the museum.

Page 4 Museum Update By Drake Rice As you have noticed when arriving at the museum, work is proceeding on the Le Flore Depot and as you walk through the gates toward the shop you see in the yard the UP Caboose, several engines and in the shop a passenger car, caboose and other items. What do all of these things have in common? They are all projects in progress at the museum. But to continue working on these and to prepare for future expansion, the museum must have funds and obtain grants. That s where each of us comes in. Yes, we all work on various projects, but now we need to start helping with funding by making financial donations to the museum. As stated before, the museum does not expect everyone to give large amounts of money, but everyone should be part of the giving program. When Anne applies for grants, many times they want to know what percent of members donate money in addition to time to the museum. If you give just a dollar a month, or twelve dollars a year, you are a financial donor in addition to a volunteer which helps in application for grants. I hope you will join others who have begun this plan of giving financially to the museum each month. Each dollar donated helps move the museum to the future growth and construction of the facilities that we all look forward to having at the Oklahoma Railway Museum (ORM). If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or other board members about this important effort. Our Union Pacific caboose now has operating trucks under it that are roller bearing. A year ago, we worked with the Kiowa County Museum on an exchange of our caboose trucks for the set under theirs. Our caboose had friction bearings trucks and one set had a bad bearing surface. Their caboose is on a stationary track and they were kind enough to exchange with us to enable ours to operate on our train rides. We thank their museum board working with us on this project. Bob Hussey s crew traveled out and did the exchange work. If you are ever out in the Hobart area, please stop by and visit their museum. They are in the old Rock Island Depot. The 36th street crossing signal work is proceeding with the grant received and all agreements signed. We are now waiting for the set of signals to arrive. They are cantilever and will replace the one old style we still have now. We are hoping to have the new signals in place and operational by the end of August. We appreciate ODOT Rail Planning for their help in this project. Work is continuing on the Le Flore Depot project. The foundation and setting of the depot are nearly complete. Then the roof can be installed, and the bay window returned to its place. This is a big project that will require a lot money to get it in usable condition. Check in at the museum on Saturdays to see where you can help out. Craig Larson, our National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) Director, would like to encourage all NRHS members to mark their calendars for November 8 and 9, That right, 2019, which allows you time to reserve the date and save your money. The NRHS Fall Conference will be in Dallas on those dates, and Craig would like to see a respectable group from our club go down for the conference and activities. ORM has a good number of NRHS members, and we have received two grants in the past from them, one for the Rock Island Caboose and the other for the Missouri Kansas Texas Inspection Car. Remember, ORM operates passenger trains on the first and third Saturdays, and the Day Out With ThomasTM event is fast approaching and we always can use help. Contact Amanda at the museum and let her know when you are available to volunteer. The Oklahoma Railway Museum s mission is to provide an educational experience of railroads and how they shaped Oklahoma and the Nation.

Page 5 ORM Education Activities May 2018 By Steve Kamm In May, it seemed that we expended more effort outside of the museum than on our grounds. On May 12th, Jerry Gore and I represented the Oklahoma Railway Museum at the first ever Trainfest in Moore, OK. During the day, Jerry promoted the museum and handed out flyers to the adults. I helped three or four dozen children solve switching problems on our portable G-scale switching layout. Then, on May 18th, Eric Dilbeck, Anne Chilton and I drove to Frisco, TX, to visit the Museum of the American Railroad (MARR). We were hosted by the museum staff, who proved themselves to be hospitable as well as very willing to help and share. The MARR is much better funded and, with 17 acres of rolling stock, much larger than ours. The MARR has realized plans to build new display tracks on their campus site and has long term plans to build a new museum complex. Their education program is already going full blast: All third-graders in Frisco spend half a day on the grounds and at the temporary museum in the Frisco Heritage Center. However, the MARR s display space in the Heritage Center is currently quite limited, so our museum is ahead in that aspect. I met with the full-time Education Director, Rayna Alan, who thankfully shared her work and okayed a bit of stealing ideas. Meanwhile, coordination with the Oklahoma History Center continues to provide benefits. The Center scanned and digitized a large 1900 Oklahoma map showing contemporary railroads, which is now hanging in our ticket office. The Center invited us to participate in a new program to produce history-themed jigsaw puzzles. Anne and I are currently deciding which image to select. The Oklahoma History Center has also provided us with copies of their 1909 Oklahoma railroad map to sell on a consignment basis in our gift shop. Coming up this summer, we will host four Boy Scout troops, two in July and two in August. The Scouts will attend our Gary Githens railroading merit badge program. Above Right, Jerry Gore at the Moor, OK railfest. Above Left, From Left to right, Eric Dilbeck, Anne Chilton, Steve Kamm, John Garbutt, Rena Alam, Bob La LaPrelle, and Kellie Murphy. At the ORM, we continue to develop and post better signage in accordance to our standards. We have posted new signs on the entries to the Exhibits Car and the Model Train Car. Bob Cossairt is working on a replacement for the much-dilapidated Gift Shop sign. Finally, Anne and I are working on a statement to be added to our website which will provide information to visitors with disabilities. It is rewarding to see that each month we improve our facilities and become more and more a real museum. Engraved Platform Bricks Cost is $50.00 per brick. 6 Page 6 Ramblin Rails By Eric Dilbeck OKC to Catoosa via Luther, Bristow, and Sapulpa On May 9th, 2018 I headed to Tulsa for a trade show for the company I work for. Leaving Oklahoma City, I headed up I-35 and jumped on Turner Turnpike to head up to Tulsa. Since I was not I a huge hurry to get there, I took the opportunity to see a few sights on the way. My first stop was in Luther. Many of our members have talked about a Santa Fe Lounge car that sits 100 ft from the old Frisco mainline at the north end of town. I grew up in the Jones-Choctaw area, so I had been through Luther often. The car was moved there in the early 80s, so it would have been there while I was living in the area, but I am not sure that I ever remembered seeing it. Today you can easily overlook the car due to the vast overgrowth of grass, bushes, and trees. I did find it, though, and snapped a few pictures from my vehicle so as not to trespass. Santa Fe Lounge car 1342 sits 125 feet off the old Frisco mainline in Luther. Leaving Luther, I decided to head up Route 66 rather than getting back on the Turnpike. After a quick stop at Tammy s Round Up Café in Davenport, OK my next stop was Bristow. I arrived at the Frisco depot that now houses the Bristow Historical Society. The depot was closed, but while I was looking around, a volunteer doing some administrative work came to the door and let me in. I image that just like any of our volunteers, she was happy to open up the museum for a guest. I briefly browsed the museum. The museum has a lot of artifacts and displays pertaining to the Bristow area, and they do have a small display of mainly Frisco-related railroad items. The original Frisco water tower stands beside the depot, one of the few remaining of this construction type. The museum hopes to one day repaint the tower. If they do, it will be a pretty sight. I continued up Route 66 to Sapulpa. The road parallels the former Frisco mainline track, now part of WATCO s Stillwater Central Railroad. I stopped here and there to look at satellite maps for any landmark of the old Frisco shops, especially evidence of large circles that might have been the pit of our turntable. I had no such luck, though, and the most I found was an old Freight station along the mainline track and a caboose that appeared to be on display. Using my maps, I arrived at the location to find the caboose and also a trolley car under cover. Continued on page 9 Above left, The Bristow depot. Right, Frisco water tower still standing in Bristow.

ORM Receives Ice Cart Donation! We recently received a donation of a UP ice cart. Matt Martin of Kansas donated the cart to the Oklahoma Railway Museum in May. The cart was used at the Salina, KS Depot. Ice carts were used by railroads at terminals to restock ice in dining and lounge cars. Ice typically was delivered by truck to depots at predetermined locations along the route but could not necessarily get close to where the cars would be spotted. Railroads usually had intermittent commissaries that restocked all food supplies and other items required to run dining and lounge service. Rest In Peace Jake The Oklahoma Railway Museum and its volunteers are saddened by the passing of our beloved yard dog, Jake. On Saturdays he could be found not far from the side of Tom Harrison. Insistant barking in the late afternoon always let Tom know when it was time to head home. Everyone enjoyed spending time with Jake. His favorite things at the museum were attention from volunteers and visitors (especially belly rubs), riding in golf carts and chasing rabbits behind the shop. Jake will be greatly missed. Page 7 Crosstie Donations Friends and families of ORM can make donations to the museum for crossties, equipment and facilities. A donation of $50.00 will help ORM purchase a new crosstie. You may donate a crosstie in recognition or in memory of someone. Donations can be mailed to the museum at the address below or made online on our website, oklahomarailwaymuseum. org. Notate Crosstie with your donation, and send to : ORM Ltd NE Grand Boulevard Oklahoma City, Visit the Depot Store The Oklahoma Railway Museum has items available for both children and adults at the Depot Store. These include baseball caps, polo shirts, t shirts, lapel pins, coasters, and now mugs. Profits from the sale of these items support the museum and its projects. The Depot Store is located inside the Oakwood Depot on the museum grounds. It is open on run days (the first and third Saturdays April through August) from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The store is also open during special events.

Page 9 Ramblin Rails Continued from page 6 It turns out I stumbled across the Tulsa Sapulpa Union Railway (TSU). Expecting to find a museum in the building, I walked into their office with a confused look on my face. The girl behind the desk did not seem concerned, as she said lots of people wander in looking for a museum as I did. She was about to go home for the day, but the general manager was there and willing to show me around. He opened up the caboose and trolley car. They both are in good condition and the caboose had items displayed in it. After he locked up the cars, he took me to the back of the building, used as an engine house, for the four switch engines the TSU uses to shunt cars around the area. They are all similar to the switch engines at the Oklahoma Railway. I was only able to see three out of the four engines, as the fourth had been dispatched to switch cars. Not wanting to take up the managers time, I headed on my way to my next stop. Catoosa. My conference was hosted at the Hard Rock Café in Catoosa, OK, but I still had a little time to go railfanning and visit a Santa Fe depot. Marc Montray, one of our members, lives in Catoosa just across the road from a busy spur line of BNSF. In his retirement, he has built a replica of a Santa Fe depot to house an operating HO scale layout. As Marc was telling me his plans for the layout, his scanner alerted us of activity on the tracks. We quickly ran out to watch a hy-rail pickup headed north. Marc said that once the hy-rail set off, the local could be cleared to head south. Soon, his scanner chimed again. With cameras in hand we ran across the street to get photo as the local passed by. The consist was freshly painted 1995 a SD40-2 in the lead, followed by 260 a SD75M,280 a SD75I, and 273 a SD75M. After the local passed I said goodbye to Marc and his depot and left to check in and set up at the trade show. As I pulled away, Marc gave me a Leslie 5 chime sendoff. For a moment I thought I was going to get run over. As a side note, the next day the museum got a call asking if we would accept the car in Luther as a donation. More details to come on. Till next time, ramble on! Click here to watch the local go by. Top right, Trolley at TSU. Top left, a section of the overhead wire from the early days of TSU still is mounted in the car barn.
