1 The INTERNATIONAL BRANCH of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society A Trip to the Netherlands 2019 Tourist Programme: 28th April to 3rd May 2019 In Netherlands the vast sea of flowers starts with crocus in March, followed by daffodils and hyacinths, then finally the tulips show their gorgeous colours, from mid-april through the first week of May. The International Branch has chosen this wonderful season to invite you to visit this beautiful country with us. Then more dancers will join us for the Dance Weekend Friday 3rd May to Monday 6th May

Our base for both the tourist programme and the dance weekend is the Hotel Mitland, in the Voorveldse Polder - a park on low-lying land reclaimed from the river and site of the Fort de Bilt.

It s a 5-minute drive or a short bus or cycle ride from the centre of Utrecht which maintains much of its medieval character. The hotel s Vijverzaal where we will be dancing has large windows and a wood-laminate floor (just one class on carpet). The hotel has a small swimming pool with sauna and Turkish steam room, a fitness room, cycles for hire and lovely parkland walks. It has free wifi in all rooms and a large car park ( 8 daily). 3 HOW TO GET THERE By Public Transport: From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Trains depart for Utrecht Central Station about every 15 minutes Single-use tickets are now disposable OV-chip cards (eenmalige chipkaart) and can be bought from machines or at the Tickets & Service Counter. They carry a 1 surcharge in addition to the standard fare. They are made from card and are printed with the date/route. To validate the ticket passengers must check-in and check-out of their journey using the card readers near the platforms or at the gate barriers. The card is disposed of after use - it cannot be used again. The yellow and blue NS ticket machines are available at all stations and have an English language option. They accept debit/credit cards and also euro coins (change given) via the coin slot. They do NOT accept euro banknotes. From Utrecht Central Station Take bus 28, 50, 52 or 53, these buses run average every 10 minutes Get off at the Oorsprongpark stop, from here it is about 10 minutes walk Cross the railway tracks Turn into the fourth street on the left, this is the Karel Doormanlaan, and walk straight along the apartment buildings After approximately 350 meters, turn right at the crossroads and continue under the Voorveldse Polder viaduct to the Ariënslaan You will find Hotel Mitland after approximately 50 meters on the right

4 How to get there by car: From Breda Take the A27 in the direction of "Ring Utrecht (Oost) /Hilversum /Almere". Follow the 'Veemarkt' signs at Utrecht. Take the 'Veemarkt' turning (exit 30). At the traffic lights at the T-junction, turn left and go under the viaduct. You will pass a 'Firezone' petrol station on your right. Drive all the way round the first roundabout, you come to so that you are driving back in the same direction as you came. Immediately after the roundabout (about 70 metres) take the first right turn. Turn right again at the T-junction. This is the Ariënslaan. After about 300 metres, you will see Mitland Hotel Utrecht to your left. From 's-hertogenbosch At the 'Everdingen' crossroads (where the A27 and the A2 split up) a good 10 km before Utrecht, follow the Utrecht / Almere (A27) signs. Stay on the A27 until you see the 'Veemarkt' signs when level with Utrecht. For further directions, see directions 'From Breda'. From Amsterdam Follow the A2 to the 'Oudenrijn' intersection. Then follow the 'Ring Utrecht' signs which will bring you on to the A12. Follow the 'Ring Utrecht' signs here too. At the 'Lunetten' intersection, follow the 'Ring Utrecht /Amersfoort /Hilversum (A27)' signs. For further directions, see 'From Breda'. From The Hague Follow the A12 as far as the 'Lunetten' intersection. Take the 'Ring Utrecht /Amersfoort /Hilversum (A27)' turning. Once on the A27, follow the 'Veemarkt' signs. For further directions, see 'From Breda'. From Hilversum Take the A27 in the direction of Utrecht. Follow the 'Veemarkt', Centrum, de Bilt" signs at exit 30 when level with Utrecht. You will pass a 'Firezone' petrol station on your right. Drive all the way round the first roundabout you reach so that you are driving back in the same direction as you came. How will we spend our days in the Netherlands? Netherlands is not a large country so we don t anticipate any coach journeys being much longer than 1 hour.

Most days Free Time is included around lunch time so that everyone can buy their own lunch to suit. March to May is peak tourist season in Netherlands and places will be very busy. Most museums have timed slots that require booking online and then queuing through security for entry, so are better done at a quieter time of year than this peak season. We are limiting the numbers for the tourist programme so we all fit comfortably in one large coach. Our chief guide will be Jan Vijftigschild and he has booked additional guides where required, for example, the Walking Tour in Amsterdam has a limit of about 15 people per guide. Sunday 28 th April Day of your arrival in Utrecht Arrive at the Hotel Mitland at your leisure. Hotel check-in opens at 2pm We have a 2-course meal booked for 7pm then you can enjoy a relaxed evening and be well rested for the tourism to start on Monday morning.

Monday 29 th April A Dutch icons day of tulips and windmills. Aim to start boarding the coach at 8.45am ready to be on our way by 9.00 We ll start with a visit to the wonderful Keukenhof Gardens.

Keukenhof covers a huge area and you ll need to allow time for rests and sustenance We will round the day off with a drive around Zaanse Schans, a town of well-preserved historic windmills and

Back at the Hotel in time to rest before dinner at 7pm Tuesday 30 th April Delft and The Hague day Aim to start boarding the coach at 8.45am ready to be on our way by 9.00 Our first stop will be the lovely town of Delft where we will also have a visit to a small Delft pottery. Back on the coach to Scheveningen where there are plenty of places near the beach for an early lunch. We then have a short drive to Den Haag where we hope to arrive at the Peace Palace in time for the weekly Carillon Concert. We ll also see the Parliament building and visit Mauritshuis Museum, an impressive building where there are works by Dutch and Flemish masters ( Back at the Hotel in time to rest before dinner at 7pm

You ll then have free time to explore with plenty of choices for where to lunch.

7 Wednesday 1 st May Amsterdam day Aim to start boarding the coach at 8.45am ready to be on our way by 9.00 We head for Amsterdam, where the coach will give us a bus tour around and we ll have a guided walking tour. You ll then have free time to explore with plenty of choices for where to lunch. We ll meet up again for a canal boat tour then walk to Haesje Claes, a lovely Dutch Restaurant for an early dinner. An evening coach ride will take us back to the Hotel. Thursday 2 nd May Gouda to Rotterdam day Aim to start boarding the coach at 8.45am ready to be on our way by 9.00 Back on the coach for a hop-on, hop-off tour of Rotterdam with its modern architecture and the water defenses at Maesland Kering. A third of the land is below sea level and would submerge if no action was taken! The coach will take us to Gouda in time to visit its famous cheese market. We ll also have some free time in Gouda. Back at the Hotel in time to rest before dinner at 7pm

8 Friday 3 rd May De Haar Castle day Aim to start boarding the coach at 8.45am ready to be on our way by 9.00 Today the coach will take us for a visit to a real castle, De Haar, on the outskirts of Utrecht. After the castle visit the coach will take us to the historic town of Amersfoort. We hope to get you back to the Hotel by about 4pm so that you can welcome dancing friends arriving for the weekend, rest and freshen up for an earlier dinner at 6pm before the Welcome Dance starts at 8pm. Dance Weekend: Teachers Fred DeMarse Fred started Scottish Country Dancing in 1986 in the San Francisco Branch. He gained his Teaching Certificate at St.

As a dancer, teacher and judge, he has travelled across many continents.

Janet Johnston Janet and her sisters were brought up in West Fife and learned to dance as children. She's attended Summer School regularly since 1984 and gained her Teaching Certificate there.

9 Dance Weekend: Teachers Fred DeMarse Fred started Scottish Country Dancing in 1986 in the San Francisco Branch. He gained his Teaching Certificate at St. Andrews Summer School in 1996, and is also a Highland Dance teacher and judge. He is the current Artistic Director of the Red Thistle Scottish Dancers performing group. As a dancer, teacher and judge, he has travelled across many continents. He is a Past Chairman of the International Branch, is very proud of the IB goals and objectives and is honoured to be asked to teach at the 2019 IB Weekend! Janet Johnston Janet and her sisters were brought up in West Fife and learned to dance as children. She's attended Summer School regularly since 1984 and gained her Teaching Certificate there. She's taught evening, day and week-end courses throughout the UK and across the globe. Janet is a member of RSCDS Stirling and co-ordinates any Branch demonstrations. She presently shares the teaching of the Ochils Club in Stirling. She's delighted to be asked to teach at the forthcoming International Branch weekend. Ramona Zohm Ramona first learnt Scottish Country Dancing at a university dance group in northern Germany. She soon began to travel to classes, Dances and events all over Germany. After moving to Munich, she joined and became involved in the organization of the Munich Scottish Association, and started teaching SCD. Ramona passed her RSCDS teaching certificate in 2015 and has taught weekly classes, day and weekend schools in Germany and Europe ever since. She has participated in the Newcastle Festival both as a dancer and trainer for the German team.

Musicians Ian Robertson Ian was born in Buckinghamshire, England. Classically trained, with a lifelong passion for the fiddle, Ian led Sound Company for 15 years and has played with many others.

Leading his band on accordion, Ian has been a regular at the RSCDS Winter School and has played for weekend schools and functions across the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia.

Shona McFadyen Shona started playing violin at the age of 8 and became enthralled with Scottish music when her sister started learning the accordion.

10 Musicians Ian Robertson Ian was born in Buckinghamshire, England. Classically trained, with a lifelong passion for the fiddle, Ian led Sound Company for 15 years and has played with many others. A regular guest at major UK and European festivals, Ian competed at the 2011 Glenfiddich Fiddle Championships at Blair Castle. Leading his band on accordion, Ian has been a regular at the RSCDS Winter School and has played for weekend schools and functions across the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia. In 2014 Ian published his first book of compositions and in 2017 recorded Full Circle with Muriel Johnstone as a companion CD to Roy Goldring s A Reel for Alice. Shona McFadyen Shona started playing violin at the age of 8 and became enthralled with Scottish music when her sister started learning the accordion. Shona has won numerous competitions, including the RSCDS Class at the NAAFC Competitions last year where she also won the Overall Senior Fiddle trophy. She also competed in the prestigious Glenfiddich Fiddle Championship and the first Niel Gow Scottish Fiddle Awards. Shona has played for country dances for 12 years with her sister Susan s band and recently also with the Glencraig SDB. She has played for the RSCDS Summer School for 6 years and twice played for Winter School in Pitlochry. Edwin Werner In 1991, having previously played SCD tunes, Edwin was taken to his first class in The Hague by his parents. His first time playing the piano for classes was at the Kuckucksnest in Schlüchtern in Two years later he formed his own accordion, fiddle and piano trio - The Windmill Band. In 2010, adding recorder, bass guitar and drums, his new band called The Inverrhine SCD Band was born. This band has recently been renamed Kiltmania and plays for events including SCD classes, balls and ceilidhs. Apart from the band he has played in various duet & trio lineups in The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Scotland.
