Attractions at these two museums include: old cars, history exhibits, stage sets, gangster stuff, and much more. The cost per person for this trip is $ which includes the coach ride, lodging & most food, and the museum passes. If you need more information or would like to sign up for the trip, please call Ron before Sunday, April 7. Ron also stresses that there will be plenty of rest stops along the route, and there is a restroom on board the bus. Editor s note: If this trip is anything like the one we took a few years ago to New Orleans, I can guarantee that you will have a good time and probably make some new friends as well!

4 Page 4 DUANE S WORLD It seems like we just put all our Christmas stuff away, and here it is, Easter already! I don t know about you, but at this late date in March, our flooding problems seem to have dried up (pun intended). Whenever we get heavy melting or heavy rain, we get a little seepage in a couple of spots in the basement. Not enough to bother putting in drain tile and a sump pump. This time the biggest problem was water in my detached garage which sits in the back yard. The drive slopes toward the garage and the water coming down follows the path of least resistance and gravitates under the door and into the shop. Several days were spent with my squeegee and dry vac trying to stay ahead of the deluge. You can also imagine the language that was coming out of me during that period! Now that everything has dried up, for the moment, I have some schemes in mind to alleviate that problem in the future, and I ll let you know how that pans out. I also heard of many homeowners who had water in their house who never had any problems in the past. Let s hope this year was an anomaly and not to happen again for a long time. With all the melting going on the last couple of weeks, cruising season is upon us! My 38 Chevy, Lil Darlin, is up on blocks, and I am running a new ground cable from the trunk mounted battery up to the engine block. After talking to many experts on the subject, I have learned that my old method of grounding to the car frame, many years ago, was not the best option and a much better ground is obtained by running the cable directly to the block. As I have said many times before, I ll let you know how that turns out. Another item I can report is that it might be time to get serious about getting Lil Darlin repainted after owning her for 35 years. I have a source who will give me an estimate on the cost of a total paint job which would include a change of color. If my wallet, after getting rid of the moths & spiders, can handle it, this might be the year to get this done. If you don t mind me saying one more time, I ll let you know how this turns out. Along with the start of cruising season, comes the part that I like to harp on every year. It s time to get your ride inspected! Our late friend, Ken Ingram, hosted the MSRA inspection for many years in Rosemount, and it was his baby. As far as I know, the inspection will be held in early May at the usual venue, and I should have the details in the next Cruz News issue. The other thing I like to stress is that the inspectors are not there to cut down your car. They are there to spot problems you may have missed. What they find may keep you from: having trouble later on down the line; or causing an accident; or resulting in your car being carted away on a flat bed truck. If you re not ready for the May inspection, there are others later in the season, including the Back to the Fifties weekend. Time to head out to the shop and finish routing that ground cable and getting my shop back in order after the water problems of a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully, you have your water problems under control as well. See you out there somewhere! D.B. BUS DRIVER SCOTT SIDELINED BY STROKE For those of you who went on the bus trip to New Orleans a few years ago, we recently learned that our congenial and capable bus driver Scott Pankow suffered a severe stroke while working a tour in Illinois. Scott spent several weeks in the hospital there and has been recently transferred to Hastings to complete his recovery. If you would be interested in sending Scott a card or calling him, his new hospital address is: Augustana Care Hastings Health & Rehabilitation, th. St., Hastings, MN, 55033, or his cell phone number is:

5 Cruz News Page 5 SOUTHERN CRUZER CAR CLUB MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES - Taken by Duane Barclay No meeting in March, see you April 17. THERE WILL BE NO HOLLEY CARBURETORS IN HEAVEN, GOODBYE KENNY! In the early hours of March 17, St. Patrick s Day, Ken Ingram lost his battle with Leukemia after a hard fought battle which impressed all of us who knew him. Undoubtedly, the world, the hot rodding community, and the Southern Cruzer Car Club lost one of the most colorful characters to come along in many a year. Please excuse me if this tribute gets a little long. I try to be fair on how much I say about the losses we suffer after a club member passes away, but trying to keep it short when you are talking about Kenny is just about impossible! I am proud to say that I was often on the receiving end of one of Kenny s zingers, as many of us were. The good part is, he could take it as well as he dished it out, and most of his friends took great glee in doing just that! In the title of this article I mention Holley Carburetors. Well, Kenny didn t have much good to say about Holleys, and wasn t afraid to let anyone within hearing distance know about it. A couple other dislikes of his were Walker mufflers and Fords. The other thing that impressed me about Kenny was his ability to spin a good story. Many of his stories came from his younger days. His many experiences sure gave him plenty of fodder to keep us entertained for hours on end. He continually was able to come up with a new batch of tales. It seems every road trip made to some car event included some weird happening to tell about later. Oftentimes, I tried to take what Ken said with a grain of salt, but then realized that this stuff was so off the wall, you couldn t make it up! Both Kenny & I are navy veterans stationed on aircraft carriers on the East Coast which gave us something in common other than cars. We spent a lot of time discussing our memories of that part of our lives. In the last months of his life, Kenny was building a scale model of a navy carrier and trying to make it look like his old ship, the USS Essex CVS-9. I know he was close to completion on it, and I hope that maybe he got it done. Our condolences go to ken s wife Lorraine and his family. I just know that Ken is now at some car show in heaven giving some poor rodder a hard time about still having a Holley carburetor under the hood of his Ford and those darn Walker mufflers under the floor boards! First photo: Ken is the emcee at the Eagan Car Fest show, Second photo shows the editor and Ken trying to look important at one of the Hastings Night Out evenings, Car Fest photo by the editor, and the Hastings photo by Fran Stade.

Club membership stands at 96 paid, for a total of 173 members. SOUTHERN CRUZER LADIES TRY A NEW VENUE FOR MARCH With no inclement weather to deal with this month, the ladies decided to drive across the river and try out David Fong s in Bloomington. The final tally was eight diners, and I ve been told that all agreed that the food was good. Next month will find them back south of the river at Clive s Roadhouse in Burnsville (South of the Burnsville Parkway on the frontage Road). Tuesday, April 23, at 5:00 p.m. Editor s note: With the expected flooding in the weeks ahead, maybe staying south of the river is a good idea! Photo submitted by Rose Barclay

7 Page 7 GARAGE SCENE - RON DONELY S 38 CHEVROLET In the Southern Cruzer Car Club, there are two 1938 Chevy Coupes actively hitting the pavement every driving season. One is my 38, Lil Darlin, and the other one is owned by Ron & Connnie Donely. I know for a fact that Ron likes to drive the wheels off the Chevy every season putting on close to 10,000 miles a year, and there are very few cruises that he misses. This winter, Ron s car spent some time in the paint shop and came out with a brand new coat of that striking purple paint (Ultra violet Rose Metallic) that makes the car really stand out in a crowd. For a little background on the car, Ron has owned it for 13 years. The motor is a 350 TPI; the Tranny a 350, 3 speed with overdrive. When Ron bought the car, it was painted and running, but Ron put all the finishing touches on it, including heat, air, sound system, etc. When the car was ready to come out of the paint shop, I went with Ron to pick it up. That was just when the big melt had started, and there was a lot of ice on the driveway. I didn t think Ron would get the car out to the street, but he prevailed and got the car home safely, albeit a little mud covered from the slush & puddles on the roads. Officially, I m sure Ron gets the early bird award this year for having his car out first! Photos by Ron & the editor WEDNESDAY GUYS FIRST CRUISE OF THE SEASON Wednesday morning, March 27, dawned sunny & dry. After breakfast at the Lakeville Perkins, several guys motored out of the parking lot to enjoy the day with the ultimate destination being Dick s Hot Rod Shop. As usual, the motorcade leaving the restaurant lot attracted onlookers among the diners. Photos by the editor.
