2 Page 2 President s Message May 9, 2010 I t was great to see everyone that was able to make it to Penn s Restaurant in Monroe. A tremendous thanks to Mike and Marsha Byrd for making the arrangements. What a perfect place with a completely separate room for meetings like ours. I want to welcome our new members, Charlie and Hellen Attaway. Wouldn t you just know it, at their first meeting as new members, Hellen won a door prize! I appreciate those that drove their Studebakers, even though there was a threat of rain. They really draw attention in the parking lot. Everyone please remember the upcoming car show at the Milt Robson museum in Braselton on the 22 nd of May at 10 AM. Afterwards the Zone Meet committee will have a short progress report meeting. Location to be announced. Don t forget to watch Extreme Home Makeover: Home Edition on May 16 th for Tom Elliott s appearance. I was pleased to hear Charlotte Delli s announcement that our chapter membership is now up to 60 members.fantastic! Looking forward to seeing everyone in Winder for the June Chapter Meeting. Let s try for a big Studebaker turnout. Everyone, please drive safely. Happy Studebakering, Dan Miller Scenes from the Middle Tennessee Chapter annual show in Shelbyville, TN on April 9-10 (Photos courtesy of Thomas Odom)

4 Page 4 North Georgia Chapter, Studebaker Drivers Club Meeting Minutes May 2, 2010 President Dan Miller opened the meeting. Thanks to Mike and Marsha Byrd for hosting us today at Penn s Restaurant. We welcomed our visitors and guests, and announced birthdays, anniversaries, and those we need to keep in our thoughts and prayers. Charlie and Hellen Attaway were here today as new members Welcome! We were pleased to see Billy and Charleen Carey, as Charleen was back in the hospital since we saw her at the April meeting. Charleen thanked the chapter for the planter we sent. Dan spoke yesterday with Marvin and Carolyn Sikes. Carolyn continues to recover from her back surgery well ahead of schedule. She is up and walking not only indoors, but also ventures out to the garage where HER new Avanti is parked. She says wanting to get behind the wheel is a real motivator for her recuperation! A reminder about our invitation to join other car clubs in a tour of Milton Robson s car museum on May 22 nd. More information will be in The Hillholder. Barbara Miller provided some updates on the Southeast Zone Meet: We have 25 room-nights reserved so far, which is half of our 50 night commitment. Charlotte Delli has six meet reservations to date; please complete the registration form you find in The Hillholder, and return it to Charlotte right away. Buddy Hunt continues working on the parking issue. We are looking for items to include in the goody bags, as well as door prize contributions. The Zone Meet planning committee will get together on May 22 nd, after we tour the Robson museum. We are going to set up a display of scarecrows as part of the meet s fall theme, and will award a prize for the best scarecrow. Charlotte Delli has directions on how to make one. Contact her via or regular mail, and she will send you a copy. Ed Burris gave us highlights of his trip to the West Tennessee Chapter s car show in Tunica, Mississippi. Barbara reminded us about the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode that airs May 16 th. As we reported last month, Tom and Maureen Elliott attended the show s unveiling of a new home for the Jeremy Williams family in Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia. Jeremy Williams was profiled last year in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for his continued dedication in coaching the Greenville High School football team while facing his own battle with ALS and meeting the needs of a son with spina bifida. Watch closely and you might catch a glimpse of Tom and Maureen in the audience! Charlotte presented the Treasurer s report; a copy will be in the newsletter. We are up to 60 memberships, according to Bill Delli. Janet Alspach won the 50/50 drawing, splitting the $90 pot with the chapter. Door prize winners were Ben Alspach, Hellen Attaway, Doris Cope, and Ray Downing. Our hosts Mike and Marsha also had a supply of calendars, drink koozies, and hats to take home. Our June meeting will be at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Winder. This is the same location we used in April. No need to RSVP. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. See you next month at the Corral!

14 Page 14 STUDEBAKER MEDIA This is a 99 page book based on the articles of the same name that appeared in Turning Wheels in the early 1990s and which won the SDC's Churchill Award for Best Article, Non-Paid. The book contains all the material from the original series, which ran for a year and a half in The Hillholder, and not only replaces some material edited out for the TW series, but has updates and several new items that were written after the TW series was published. "Some Thoughts" is aimed at the first-time restorer, but will be of value to the more experienced; it doesn't try to be a "how to restore a car book", but gives you a look at the decision-making processes, tools, spaces and basic skills you'll need to do a restoration, and will provide a framework to help you structure your project. There are several chapters of Studebaker-specific advice. In the chapter devoted to engine rebuilding, I've tried to describe a step-by-step process that anybody can follow, and I ve tried to include tips I've picked up in building 60+ engines. I've received many compliments on the engine chapter, and I'm glad to finally be able to get it in print. Some Thoughts on Restoring a Studebaker is available for $22.50 USD, plus $4 for handling and postage, for a total of $26.50 to US addresses. Canadian orders add $6.50 USD for postage, total $29.00 USD. To order a second book in the same order, add an additional $3 ($4 USD for Canadian orders). For Australia and Europe, shipping is $12, total $34.50 USD paid by PayPal only. The easiest way to purchase (and the only way if you are in Australia or Europe) is to PayPal the appropriate amount to me at, and mention Some Thoughts in the remarks section. Otherwise, if you live in the US or Canada, send your name, mailing address and a check or USPS money order for $26.50 ($29.00 USD bank draft for Canadian buyers) to: Chuck Lampman 4141 Lynette Ct. Kennesaw, GA If mailing payment, please me to notify me that the check is coming so I can set one aside for you, or get some more printed. (I try not to keep too big an inventory because they are expensive to stock.) (8/2010)
