S o u t h e r n N e v a d a C h a p t e r, I n c. # The Director s Saddle Wow! Were has the year gone? It has really been both an honor and a pleasure to serve the Chapter over the last year, but nothing could be possible without the hard work and dedication of the Officers and members of the Chapter. So I want to thank the Primaries, Discretionary, and Road Captains for their continued support towards the Chapter and the countless members that supported the various rides and efforts of the Chapter. I also want to thank Nick, Marc, and the entire dealership family, and especially Randy (could not have done it without you) for helping to make this year a great experience. They were always there to do whatever was asked of them to help our SNHOG family. Hopefully, by the time I finish this article I ll be able to announce the leadership for next year. Christmas & Chanukah are the two prominent holidays this month. As different as they may seem, both share the themes of Hope and Joy. Don t worry, I m not about to go into a history lesson of Y'hudhah HaMakabi, or start quoting the Gospel. Where I grew up as a child, walking down the neighborhood streets one would pass an endless array of brightly lighted Christmas Trees and Menorahs peeking through the frosted windows into the darkened streets. Candy canes, which adorned trees inside the homes, were freely gambled away to the spin of dreidels in the streets and nearby playgrounds. Continued on Page 2 S.N.H.O.G. 2 Continued from page 1 Director s Saddle...continued The Director s Saddle...continued It was for me and remains my favorite time of year. Even Mr. Dunbar the next-door neighbor and perennial Mr. Scrooge of the neighborhood had eyes that twinkled and had a bit of a smile during the holidays. For my Dad it was that time of year to break out Popular Mechanics to build a special gift, maybe that Geiger Counter or the shooting gallery with photoelectric targets with hand-made Tommy Gun and Luger Pistol! But one thing was always sure; some new nefarious trap would be made to keep his young son in bed until morning. All because one year I decided to get up and open all the presents at 3:30 AM. Parents... they just have no sense of humor! Oh and what marvelous devices he came up with! Like the pressure sensitive alarm that was hidden under the carpet or that thin and invisible piece of thread ankle high strung across the hallway. Yeah, Mr. Wizard and Rube Goldberg were nothing compared to my Dad! As we celebrate the joys of December, let s not forget those who may not be as fortunate. The Childhood Cancer Toy Ride on December 14 th is one way to give back. Collection boxes have been placed at both RRHD and LVHD for NEW UNWRAPPED gifts. These will be collected and carried by our Chapter from LVHD to RRHD for distribution and if you want to see literally dozens and dozens of smiling faces, this is an event not to miss. There are also tickets (as of this writing) still available for the Chapter Christmas Party at the Golden Nugget. Cost is $40.00 per person, and each member will have the opportunity to draw for a gift card valued between $ $ So as I close this last newsletter for 2013, God Bless You All and my wishes for a Merry Christmas, Frelikin Yom Tov, and Happy & Healthy New Year AJ Notes from the Editor: It has been real great being Editor for the Hog Newsletter for the past few years, but it is about time for some fresh perspective on a Great Southern Nevada Hog Chapter. Thanks, and I look forward to what the upcoming Editor has to say the next coming years. Mario Torres Page 2

Road Captains Article By Tom Westdorp As 2013 winds to a close it s time for a little reflection. It s been another safe year of riding for the SNHOG. I want to thank all the Road Captains for their efforts in that regard. Earlier this year I was chastened for smiling during a lively safety discussion on a ride, but I couldn t help it. When you see how much our Road Captains care about ensuring the safety of our riders, how vigorous some of the discussions get, I really can t help but enjoy their passion and dedication. It s been a pleasure serving as the Lead Road Captain and being involved with this extraordinary group. I also want to thank all the riders this year. You ve all worked to be safe, and when mistakes were made learned from them. Road Captains alone cannot make for safe rides, our safety is a result of each and every one of us striving to do the right things on each ride. Well done everyone! But don t get too cocky because safety is a process. As soon as safety slips, even a bit, from being your top concern bad things will happen. Stay alert and stay safe. I can t pass up a chance to remind you to check your tires and air pressures. Remember a 10 degree change in temperature means a 1 pound change in tire pressure. So what was the temperature when you last checked your pressures, and what is the temperature when you set off on a ride now? Keep them up to HD s recommended levels for your safety and to maximize the value of the money you spend on tires. I just got soaking wet by having my rain gear in my saddlebags instead of on me. Word to the wise wear the right gear! On that ride I was especially thankful that I had good tires on my bike, and that my bike is ABS equipped. Make sure your tires still have adequate tread depth. If your tire pressure gauge doesn t have a tread depth function (many of the HD gauges do) have your tires checked the next time you re at the dealership. It might even be worth an extra trip. Aquaplaning is not the way you want to find out it s time for new tires. Although a tire check is part of the service provided when you take your bike in to the dealer for its regularly scheduled service, tires don t always wear out in 5,000 mile intervals. I ve refrained from recommending products but I want to make sure you hear about the product Dr Tiki found. It turns out there s a battery pack available, on a waist belt, that lets you use your heated gear when you aren t plugged in to your bike. It s roughly $200, but it gets you a lot more value and enjoyment from your investment in heated riding gear. Imagine still being warm while at a ride stop. Do you have kids or grandkids into winter football or soccer? How about those cold mornings and evenings at the dog park? Banished to the outdoors for your smoke breaks? If you already have heated gear make it even more useful, if you ve been putting off heated gear because of our short winter season maybe it makes more sense if you can use it for other things? The battery pack is rechargeable, compact and should last for 4-5 Churchills. (those are big cigars, minute smokes) As they say on TV, makes a great Christmas gift. Page 3

Road Captains Article cont d, BY TOM WESTDORP Tom Westdorp I did a little field trial at 42 degrees with a 15+ mph wind. Wearing my riding boots, normal socks, riding jeans, and a long sleeve Harley T-shirt. I put on my heated jacket liner and heated glove liners, plugged into my battery pack, set it to 2 on a scale of 3, set the liner control to a medium setting and smoked a Churchill in pure, toasty comfort! Didn t even put a dent in the battery life. I didn t wear a jacket, nor gloves, just the liners. Imagine those cold mornings in an Albertson s parking lot, the stops on the Frosty Balls run, or waiting for a gas stop to end. Nice and warm! LOH, who s looking out for you? Who s got your back? That s right, me. I m here for you, LOH! I can see the smiling faces in the chapter photos now. $200 is a lot of money for something smaller than your dog-eared copy of Fifty Shades of Gray, but it keeps you warm and contented outdoors. Yep, it s better than porn! Guys, Christmas is coming HD, if you see this, here s a great, and free, product idea: An orange and black HD branded Snuggie that plugs into the battery pack! You won t be able to handle the demand. A tip of the hat to Dr Tiki for the find! To wrap up, who knows where 2014 will take us, so many things are still up in the air, but wherever you ride, and whomever you ride with, always remember to stay safe. Riding a Harley provides so much enjoyment, but most of it comes from the great, though ever so slightly dysfunctional, family with whom we get to share the experience. Thanks SNHOG! Page 4

Welcome New Members New Members, are, Heidi Bowman,, Jason Regester, PamWilson, Scott Bourne, Craig Smith, Patrick Wynn Event Photographs... A Friendly Reminder! Our SNHOG Event Photo Gallery is also a great way to share the fun we have as a Chapter with friends, family and/or anyone who is skeptical about joining our Chapter. By browsing through our event photos for just a few minutes, anyone is able to quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round! Although Beverly Kusler, Darlene & Tom Greenough, David Fraley, & Penny Carver are our Chapter Photographers, they are obviously not the only ones taking pictures at our events. If you have a photo(s) you would like to submit for the gallery, please to photos@snhoglv.com. The name and date of the event photos were taken at must be included. 7 Four Corner Ride Notes from Chester McQuillen By Chester McQuillen The SCMA offers a patch for a Four Corner Ride. No, this is not just a trip to the Four Corners area of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. That would be too easy and this is the same group that also offers the Iron Butt patch. This is the actual four corner cities of the United States: Madawaska, Maine; Key West, Florida; San Ysidro, California; Blaine, Washington. I did not qualify for this patch. To earn this patch, one has to visit all four corner cities within 21 days. This didn't make much sense to me as I am about the journey and not the destination. The ride from Florida City to Key West offers some of the most amazing views that I have ever seen. The waters under one bridge will have a distinct palette of colors almost as if someone had just drawn them. The different shades of green, blue, yellow and brown cannot be described adequately by me, they have to be experienced. They only drawback is that one must leave by the same road. I am a lover of loops, but getting to see those views again made up for it. Madawaska, Maine is a small town of bilingual folks who speak more French than English. The roads to the I town were in good shape and pass through some very nice scenery, but watch out for moose. One of the mistakes that I made on this trip was not going to Fort Kent, which is 45 miles west of Madawaska. Fort Kent is the endpoint for US Highway 1. Blaine, Washington is in Washington. What can I say? I love mountains and there is some very nice riding through mountains to get there and back. I want to apologize to my California friends, but San Ysidro is in California. There are corner markers in Maine and Florida, and there is the International Peace Arch in Washington. These make for good photo ops, although the Arch is not motorcycle friendly and must be walked to. Along with the four corner patch, SCMA also offers the X patch. This requires going to the four corners by going through Lebanon, Kansas, where there is a marker for the contiguous center of the US. I do recommend visiting the town Grocery store. They have one of my favorite types of cafe. Instead of a menu, they tell you what they are serving, although they will burn a burger for you. The blue plate was outstanding. Live to ride and ride to eat. For anyone interested in the Four Corner Patch: or One other site worth visiting near Lebanon is Cawker City, Kansas, home of the world s largest ball of twine. This is actually the second largest, but it was made entirely by hand. There is access to add twine to the ball. Also worth mentioning is Belle Fourche, South Dakota. They have a marker there as the actual center of the entire US. The bad news is that the marker is not at the actual center. Problems with vandalism have forced the property owners to close access to the site and the marker is located at the Belle Fourche Visitor center. Page 7

Here are More HOG Benefits for you HOG Member Benefit Tom Westdorp How can I get more value from my HOG membership? A question many of us ask ourselves. Sure, there are the birthday gift certificates from our dealerships, and the monthly ticket drawings they fund. There s the discount on AT&T wireless plans from the national, and the basic roadside assistance coverage (by the way if you haven t upgraded that to Deluxe give it some serious thought right now!) But if you can t get to the HD Museum or Miller Park how else can you get more value? Did you know that the national HOG will reimburse up to $50 for the successful completion of an accredited MSF rider training course? Not just the Rider s Edge classes, any accredited MSF rider training course. Now I know that each of you is an experienced rider, so the beginner course is probably not the right one for most of you, but let s think about the Skilled Rider course. A course taken on your own motorcycle, to sharpen your skills and help make you a safer rider. I hope everyone reading this article has his or her driver s license endorsed for motorcycle operation. Although those on HD trikes don t require it in Nevada, the rest of us certainly do. If there are any scofflaws reading this, please be aware the Skilled Rider course also can be used to earn your M endorsement. When I took the course half the students were taking it in a big hurry after getting a ticket. Wouldn t it be a good idea to get it handled on your schedule rather than the court s docket? Assuming we re all legal at this point, why take a Skilled Rider course? After all many of you have been riding motorcycles for years, even decades. What can you learn at this point? There s the whole old dog, new trick thing going on, too. Right? You put on lots of miles riding with the chapter, riding with other friends, riding alone just to enjoy the ride. Thousands, maybe tens of thousands of miles. You re not the owner of some garage bound dust magnet, you re riders. Skilled and experienced riders. Assume for a moment the course was required, just for the sake of argument. Would you be more worried that you re wasting money or that you won t pass? If you answered the former, ask yourself if you re really that good or maybe just a little cocky. If you re worried about passing, schedule the class now. You re smart enough to know you need it. We can all sharpen our skills, and having an instructor take you through a planned MSF curriculum addressing safe motorcycle riding will benefit any rider. Build your skills, correct bad habits and increase your confidence. Page 15

Here are More HOG Benefits for you cont. Continued, Also passing an MSF rider training course can earn you a discount on your motorcycle insurance. Check with your insurance company. HOG and probably your insurance company think the rider training courses are worthy of them putting up cash to subsidize them, by reimbursing you for passing them. Your part seems pretty easy! Take the course, what could be the problem? All the Road Captains passed the Skilled Rider course, and I sure would like to see the patch or pin signifying you passed the course on every vest in the chapter. How many times have you silently questioned the riding ability of someone else? How many times do you think someone else has silently questioned your riding ability? Are you really so good the class would be a waste of time and money, or will you be just a little worried about passing? How many of you are already wondering, how much do I get reimbursed if I don t pass? Take the course; you know it s the right thing to do! Page 16

The Story of Stella Brown It all started back in May when my Dad, Glen Oelrich, invited me to an LOH ride to Rachel, NV. I didn t know it then, but that is the beginning of the story of Stella. I met Dad at his house the morning of the ride, and he went over instructions for being a passenger. I put on his extra helmet and gloves and hopped onto the back of his bike. As we took off and before we even got out of the neighborhood, I knew I loved riding. By the end of the ride I was completely hooked: hooked on riding and hooked on Harley s. By the end of the week I was a member of the SNHOG chapter. That same week I attended a Garage Party, and very timidly and with MUCH hesitation and fear paid for the Riders Edge Class. I attended Chapter meetings when I could and went on every ride I could possibly make. (She kept bugging me about when the next ride was. Glen) In September, I finally swallowed the last of my fear and took the Riders Edge Class. I was honored that my dad was able to be there to watch me take (and pass) the riding test. (In the entire class of 6, no one lost more than 8 points on the practical test. I knew then she would have no problem handling a bike. Glen) Although my original plan was to be able to save enough money to buy my own Harley by the end of summer, 2014, after I took the class I really had the bug! I wanted a Harley (more specifically a 2003 Heritage Softail Classic) so bad I could almost taste the chrome and leather. Somehow, I just KNEW that I would know MY bike when I found it and prayed it would come much sooner than next summer, although I didn t have much hope. One Sunday afternoon, kind of on a whim, my Husband, Mike, and I met my Dad over at RRHD because they had two used Heritage Softails on the floor. It turned out I didn t care for either one, but Doug, the sales manager, said he had something in the back that he thought I might like. That s when I met Stella - a beautiful 2003 Heritage Softail Classic with less than 10,000 miles, in great condition and ready to ride. I fell in love! I threw my leg over the seat, and knew I had found my bike. Mike and Doug went to the office to discuss the details of our possible purchase but I was disappointed to find out that it might just be too much. I reluctantly left, but with the faintest (more like high hopes since Mike was talking Glen) glint of hope in my eye that I would see Stella again. The next afternoon I called Mike, only to find out he was at RRHD talking with Doug, but there was no budging on the price of the bike. It seemed Stella was out of our (my) reach. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I asked Mike if he had talked with Doug some more and each time he answered No. I was losing all hope. Finally on Friday (after that whole day had gone wrong) Mike called me with bad news. (A strategic move to keep her off track. Glen) It seemed that Stella had been sold the day before because apparently, according to Doug some guy had come in the day before and bought the bike. I was heart-broken and yes, I cried. The next day, Saturday, was the Nation of Patriots Ride to Nellis AFB. It was a wonderful thing to see Veterans presented with the money we as a group helped to raise. After that ride, Dad said he had to go RRHD, and since I am always up for a trip to the dealership I said I would go with him, although I was still grieving over the loss of Stella. (Actually she would have gone anyway since she was captive in my backseat. Glen). I followed Dad into the dealership. He walked towards the parts department; bought something handed it to me and said You re going to need this. I just looked at him and stupidly asked why? (Almost like the teenage years. Glen) He gave no further explanation, but just walked towards the bikes. Page 23

The Story of Stella Brown cont d I figured maybe I would just sit on other bikes when I noticed Dad standing in front of a bike that I hadn t seen when we walked in, even though it was by the front entrance. I thought it strange that he was just standing there, and when I noticed the bow I started walking towards it. That s when I realized that is was STELLA! My bike that Mike said was sold. I was so confused for a minute, and then I noticed the card on the bike with my name on it. So here s what REALLY happened that week! Mike went in on Monday MONDAY!- and bought Stella. All week long, he made me believe there was no hope, and he and my Dad both lied (such a harsh word. Glen) to me in order to keep this wonderful conspiracy under wraps! When Dad and I walked into the dealership that Saturday, Mike, my daughter Dayton and my 7 month old grandson were hiding in by service, waiting for me to notice the bike with the big bow on it yes, the bike with the big bow and my name on it that I walked right by! The something Dad bought was a battery tender, and when he handed it to me, I still didn t have a clue! I was so overwhelmed with emotion that I cried (something I don t do very often). It was the greatest conspiracy ever, and my Husband and my Dad pulled it off wonderfully those liars! So that is the beginning of the story of Stella. But this isn t the end. The end has yet to come, and between now and then Stella will get a lot of miles! Page 24
