2 Upon completing the training, students will be able to demonstrate specific knowledge and skills, including: Transportation by a school bus is a privilege, not a right Understanding of the district s policies for student conduct and school bus safety Appropriate conduct while on the bus The danger zones surrounding the school bus Procedures for safely boarding and leaving a school bus Procedures for safe vehicle lane crossing School bus evacuation and other emergency procedures

3 Student ID You must have a student ID to ride a Richfield School Bus. Drivers will ask you for your ID until he or she gets to know you. If you have lost or forgotten your ID, you will need to replace it before the end of the school day. New ID s can be obtained for $2.00 during your lunch period in the student services office.

4 Safety & Management Policy The bus driver is the responsible authority on the bus. Students and parents must respect his/her need to be in charge of the bus at all times by following the directions given. Students must board and leave the bus only at specified bus stops. Students must remain a safe distance away from the pickup point when buses are arriving at the stop. Students should line up single file to enter the bus.

5 Safety & Management Policy Pickup times are established, and students should be 5 minutes early to designated stops. Students must go directly to their seats after entering the bus. Standing or walking on the bus while it is in motion is dangerous. Books, backpacks, lunch bags, sports and duffle bags, and all other objects must be kept out of the aisles. Backpacks, musical instruments and other large items must be handled by students in such a way as to not come into contact with other students.

6 Riding a Bus Other Than Your Own Only authorized students may ride the school bus. All riders must ride the bus to which they were assigned. Any student who wants to ride a different bus must bring a note from a parent/guardian in advance. The note must contain the following information: Date Student s full name Exact destination (bus stop) Parent/guardian s signature Parent/guardian s daytime phone number. The office will write a bus pass for the student to give to the driver.

7 Danger Zone Each student must be aware of the area surrounding the school bus called the Danger Zone. The Danger Zone is the area extending 10 feet in all directions from the school bus in which serious student injuries and deaths occur.

8 Rules at the Bus Stop Arrive at your stop early. The driver does not wait for late students. Respect the property of others. Use appropriate language If you need to cross the street, cross in front of the bus and wait for the driver to give you a signal.

9 Rules on the Bus Follow directions of the driver Sit in your seat facing forward No inappropriate language Keep arms and legs to yourself No eating, drinking on the bus No vandalism

10 Bus Discipline Procedures Richfield Middle School expects all students to follow bus safety directions at the bus stop and while riding a bus. If students fail to follow directions, the following consequences may occur: Bus driver warning Bus misconduct report After school/lunch detention Assigned seat Loss of bus riding privileges

11 Activity Bus RMS provides an activity bus that departs school at 4:22 pm Monday-Thursdays. Must have an activity pass to ride the bus. Bus routes are not the same as the normal 3:20 routes. Activity bus routes are located at the front door and in the main office
