Along the main highway to Ballinascarthy, County Cork, Ireland the Model T Club built a stainless steel Model T monument to honor the Ford family. Fairlane Manufacturing, was Henry Ford s first plant outside the U.S., which he named after Fairlane Street in West County Cork, Ireland. 2 THE PEDAL PUSHER Volume 29 Number 3 Established 1990 March 2019 March. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE This is the hardest president s message to write because we are past the membership drive and before touring season. I want to encourage people to think about hos<ng a tour this year. We ve been a li?le light on touring the last couple years when our efforts were split to the na<onal tour. Well, that s over with so let s entertain ourselves for a change. If you have ideas for a tour contact Steve Vining so we can fill the year up. 7 IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR What a treat to visit this gem of a museum. You pass by the gramophone, in the entry parlor, and the collections of hubcaps, and metal automobile logos, and realize the tribute to Ben Sharpsteen s entertaining illustrations are featured throughout. In the historically correct details of the dioramas you want to shrink down to the size of the miniature people so that you too may experience the tranquil feeling of the simplicity of life of yesteryear. Imagine walking down the tree lined lane, calling out a greeting to the people engaged in a game of croquet, then you traverse the four sided gazebo, feed the chickens, meander through the glass conservatory, ride a horse drawn carriage, register at the hotel, and visit one of the delightfully decorated homes for a cup of tea. The history of Calistoga continues on a large timeline on the wall, and in several other dioramas. You could enjoy a ride on the stagecoach or deliver the mail, if the life-size horses depicted hitched to the harnesses were real. The displays of the kitchen tools encourage reflection on how they were used, and to inquire, is that an original pressure cooker on the floor in front of the cook stove? Outdoor tools and livery items are included in the barn shed area. In the back is the original house with a display of handmade quilts, one of which is silk. The three rooms are filled with furnishings of the time period, and maybe even some things you aren t too familiar with. Remember the wicker baby strollers? The bed and dresser sets are beautiful, intricately carved, and probably one of a kind. The featured display, at this time, was brass era car s memorabilia. A display case filled with brass, another with items related to oil, gas, tools, and tires. A display was dedicated to a chauffeur, his clothes, and hat badges. Another display was clothing you would need for a car ride. Don t miss the vintage books on display throughout. A favorite for the ladies was a display of beaded and metal woven purses. If you turn the corner past the postal box display, you are back to the gift shop which is filled with lacy items, hat pins, and miniature models, and lots of wonderful vintage books. If you enjoyed the winsome paintings featured throughout, you can purchase prints of some of Ben Sharpsteen s paintings that were the magazine covers for the Horseless Carriage magazine. Thank you, Jack and Gail, for the special showing of your museum! By now, we had worked up an appetite, and walked through the picturesque town (mountains close by, just like in the diorama), crossed the bridge over a rushing river, and enjoyed a yummy lunch at the Pacifico Mexican 7 Restaurant.
