2 President s Message July 2014 Gazette This has been a busy summer of travel for Pat and me. It started when we went to Ontario, CA for the Big Train Show May 30 th. Since then we have been to Idaho, Montana, and Washington, visiting Pat s relatives. Next month will find us in Cape Cod with our Harwich friends and also in VA with our daughter, son- in-law, and our 5 grandchildren. We return to Phoenix the end of July in time to participate in the modules display at the Mesa Public Library. I hope that many of you will be helping with that event by setting up, running trains, tearing down as well as interacting with the other ABTO volunteers, the library patrons, and especially the children who come to see the trains. Please sign up with Jim Kangas or let Ginny know you want to be included in this important activity. Congratulations to our three photo contest winners: First place Don Sorenson, second place Rich Hull, and third place Ginny Morris. Well done, everyone. Thank you to Mike Quaintance for his leadership in the photography SIG. Be sure to take a look at the winning photos in this issue of the Gazette on page 9. There will be no official club meeting in July. But why not make plans to double up in August by carpooling with other ABTO people to the Beat the Heat swap meet in Prescott on August 16 th and then attending the ABTO general meeting on August 23 rd at Cardon Children s Medical Center? Steve Lewis is the featured speaker on the topic of switches. Also at the August meeting, I will share a topic of interest on George Stephenson, Father of the Railways. I have been reading about him this summer. In a serendipitous moment while shopping in Port Townsend, WA at a vintage store, I spotted a model of Stephenson s Rocket engine. I will be happy to show you this model. We are saddened by the death of our good friend, Bill Nagle, and our sympathy goes out to his widow and other welcoming me as a newcomer and of our many good conversations about our hobby of garden railroading as well as other common interests. I hope everyone is having a good summer, enjoying special times with family and friends. John Meyers Chief Engineer 2

The Board will bring up a suggested change of bylaws to better understand the wording of the Vote of Confidence at the August Meeting and then at the September meeting, the ABTO membership will vote on the change. Mike Quaintance brought up the possibility of ABTO making a monetary donation to the Superstition Mountain Museum Railroad. There was quite a discussion on this matter. This was tabled until the August meeting when Mike Q. will ask for a certain amount of money. Roger Crooks had asked if ABTO could hold a meeting at the museum. John Mazzoli had mentioned that members will be permitted in the future to bring their trains to run on the train layout.. Mike Lewandowski asked Mike Q. what are the immediate needs for the railroad Don Halver asked if there would be signage showing that ABTO had made a donation. The website is smmrr.org. Mike Q. will report at the August Meeting on these matters. Ennis Thompson brought up the question, what is ABTO going to do with their money. There was quite a discussion about renting a building and Mike T., treasurer mentioned that there would be extra costs of insurance, taxes, security and other expenses would be incurred. Mike also mentioned that we as a 501 (c) (3) organization and must spend on charitable and educational functions. Jim Gardner suggested to set up a committee headed by Mike Temenski to discuss the use of ABTO monies. Roy Towne suggested getting a donation from the Arizona Museum for the library event. Signs for Meetings were approved and Steve Lewis will take care of getting the signs. Ryan House-Ken Hawkins brought up to get volunteers from the West Valley to help with the operation of the railroad. ABTO is giving John Meyers an initial $ to get the railroad up and operating. ABTO will give $200- $400 each year and will ask Ryan House to help in funding like Cardon does. Terry Haas mentioned that he has been going down on Mondays to clean and maintain the railroad. Christmas Open Houses-Glenn Saber had suggested having daylight hours. It was mentioned to Glenn just to let Sandy know your hours and she will state it on the Open House listing. Helen Rabbitt also asked for more publicity in her area to publicize her railroad. Mike Lewandowski asked Mike Quaintance, coordinator of the open houses, if he had a schedule of open house volunteers. Also, if there would be an Open House meeting in the near future. Yes, there will be a meeting in the near future. We started this last summer when the Museum advertised for volunteers that were railroad hobbyists. John and I, along with about 6 others built a temporary layout from a donation given to the museum of G-scale equipment. We are now building a permanent layout that illustrates the history of Arizona around the turn of the century (1900 s). We now have a 32 high base in a giant U shape approximately 50 X 50. This summer we will finish filling the base with dirt and we should be ready to start the layout by late autumn. At this time the museum is working on several avenues of corporate donations and we hope to have enough to build a ramada over the base. We encourage visits at any time to see the temporary layout and the progress on the permanent one as well as the rest of the history that the museum has to offer. They are open 7 days a week, 9:30 to 4. smmrr.org Mike Quaintance JULY MEETINGS CANCELLED UPCOMING ABTO EVENTS Oct. 11 Railfair at McCormick Stillman RR Park Nov. 1 Roundabout at Tucson SWAP MEETS & SHOWS. 7 Bill Nagles s Eulogy by Ennis Thompson During WWII Bill Nagle s parents moved the family to Northern CA from Mass. to become part of the Redwood logging industry in this part of the state. Bill was 12 at the time of the move and later worked some summers around and in his dad s logging camp at different odd jobs. This was what most boys did during the war filling men s jobs, as so many of our men were in the war overseas. In the spring of Bill s senior year in high school, an Air Force Recruiter came around for an assembly, looking for young fellows to enlist after graduation in June. Bill told me this sure sounded better than falling trees and climbing around on those logs in the river. Bill enlisted in the Air Force and before he knew it was in South Korea at one of our satellite air bases during the Korea conflict. For the next 24 years, Bill was an enlisted Radar Specialist in the Air Force reaching the rank of E-9, Master Sergeant. He was stationed at Germany for two stints, where he met Herta, his wife. They have two children, Linda and Bill, Jr., and a number of grandchildren. One of his favorite granddaughters, Sierra, is presently a 1 st Lt. In the Army at a line officer school in Florida. She had graduated from ASU with a lot of the Nagle s help & assistance. Bill Jr. is at our local VA hospital suffering from bone cancer for some 6 years. Plus the 10 years duty in Germany, Bill s enlistment included stops at Kansas, Alaska, Northern California & Williams Field in the valley. After retirement from the service, Bill completed a BA degree in ASU and worked as a lab tech at Chandler Regional Hospital for 17 years. With increasing use of DNA testing and responsibility in court cases, he decided to become a guard at Shetler Security Guard with less stress. Bill was instrumental in pushing me into security work, which I ve been part of for 5 years now. The Commemorative Air Falcon Field and ABTO have been a vital part of Bill s life and leisure time for some time now. These are some of the different roles Bill took on: 1. Head Technician and engineer of the German plane stationed at Falcon Field. Bill wasn t a pilot. While on an ABTO module gig the plane was taken up and crashed, killing two of Bill s friends. He dropped out of the CAF for some time after that. 2. Christmas Open Houses: Worked with me for 6 years nightly at Christmas for ABTO s Christmas Open Houses. The 1 st year we were open, Bill worked 19 of the 20 nights we were open. (6-10) 3. Built his own layout by himself as he approached 80 years of age, hauling all of the interlocking block and ¼ in. granite in from the street. Bill was open at Christmas with his German layout. For some time Bill was the only person in ABTO with European G-Scale trains after Jack Slinkard passed away. 4. Opened the door for the annual Falcon Field Modules Participation for ABTO. He was on the CAF board at the time they started the Planes, Trains, Motorcycles and Cars show. 5. He was chairman of the New membership group into ABTO, working with them on the do s & don ts of Garden Railroading 6. When we started up ABTO s Modules and Dioramas, Bill bought the trailer-stabilizing hitch for the big trailer. Herta and Bill pulled a 5 th wheel for years. Continued on page 8 7

8 7. Traveled with Eaglewing s Iron Craft and Dan Hoag promoting G-Scale and Eaglewings at National Conventions. 8. A quality master builder of models structures, boats, cars. He even built a sailboat in 9. Bill helped out anyone in the club on most any project they needed help on, if asked. We ve lost a great member and achiever and his final rites were held at the Veteran s National Cemetery on Cave Creek Road north of Union Hills on Friday, June 27th at 9am. A fly over was held on Saturday, June 28th at Falcon Field. 9 Photography Winners Our photography contest for the June meeting was a success. I received 19 entries from nine entrants and I picked out three winners and an Honorable Mention. First place went to Don Sorenson, second to Rich Hull and third to Ginny Morris, and the Honorable Mention to Don Sorenson. Their entries can be seen below. The contest theme was open as long as it had something to do with our hobby, Model Trains. As I explained at the June meeting, I was looking for photographs that grabbed the viewer s attention and not just an insurance record. Even with our current small point-n-shoot cameras today, it s almost impossible to take a picture that isn t focused or correct exposure so the main emphasis is on composition. None the less, I tried to convey that interesting photos can still be made by adjusting the exposure and the focus away from the camera s basic settings. For the next photo contest to be announced in the August Gazette, I will tighten up the theme a little bit, but as I mentioned in the meeting, the entry will not have to be of your own layout and I will allow some computer alterations, or photo-shopping.. 1st place 2nd place 3d place June Membership Meeting Photos -photos by Don Sorenson 9
