9 California B eing the third largest state, California is located on the Pacific coast and stretches 780 miles between the Oregon and Mexican borders. It also has the highest population than any other state in the country. California is also known as the Golden State, which refers to the discovery of gold in Today, the term could refer to being the land of golden opportunity, for its sunny climate, amazing natural beauty, strong economy, and relaxed lifestyle. Los Angeles, the second largest city in the nation, is the largest city. It includes the famous district of Hollywood, where people flock to see and be movie stars. To the north lies San Francisco, home of the famous cable car system originally introduced to relieve horses of the difficulty of dragging streetcars up the steep hills. The Central Valley lies inland from San Francisco, with the San Joaquin River providing a source for well-irrigated citrus fruit groves and farms. The vineyards inland from San Francisco produce the majority of the nation s wine. From September to October, the grape harvest takes place at over 200 wineries in the region. Early Spanish missionaries were the first wine growers. California is also the state of many natural wonders. Home of the highest waterfall at Yosemite National Park, parks that preserve giant redwood trees, Inyo National Forest that is home of the oldest living trees on Earth, and a barren desert that is the lowest point in the nation. State Symbols California Quail California Redwood Golden Poppy Mendocino County History Mendocino County was one of California's original 27 counties, created in 1850 by the State Legislature. Because of its small population, Mendocino County was administered by the government of Sonoma County until 1859, when the government was established in a small building on Main Street in Ukiah. County officials moved into the first courthouse at the site bounded by Standley, Perkins, State and Schools streets on January 24, Mendocino County derives its name from Cape Mendocino, which lies northward of its northern boundary. Cape Mendocino was given its name by a famous Spanish navigator of the 16th century, Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo. Cabrillo discovered it in 1542 while on a voyage of discovery along the Pacific Coast and named it in honor of Don Antonio de Mendoza, the first Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico), and the patron of the voyageur. The Californian Native American tribes who originally lived in the area were the Yuki, the Pomo, the Cahto, and the Wintun. The first permanent non-indigenous settlements in the county were made on the coast north of Big River in April of Mendocino County encompasses an area of over 2 million acres or approximately 3500 square miles

14 How much House Can You Afford? How much you can afford is determined by a relatively simple formula. Lenders generally figure that no more than 28 percent of your income should be for total housing costs. In addition, they require that your total monthly debt be less than 36 percent of your income. (Note: These are general numbers. Other loan programs may allow higher percentages.) For example, if you make $48,000 a year, divided by 12 months, your monthly income is $4,000. (Remember, that s $48,000 in gross pay, before federal and state taxes are removed.) Twenty-eight percent of $4,000 is $1,120. That is the most you can make in a monthly mortgage, taxes, and insurance payments. Generally, to qualify, the self-employed buyer must have been self-employed in the same line of work for at least 24 months before applying for a loan. Lenders use your net income, the figure at the bottom of schedule C of your federal income tax form, to decide how large a mortgage you can carry. But they don t look at what you earn now or what you made last year. Rather lenders figure the monthly average of your income over the past 24 months. Also, overtime pay & bonuses sometimes may not be figured into your average income. Don t forget that points, closing costs & other out-of-the-pocket expenses probably will come out to about one percent of the mortgage amount
