1 January-February-March 2018 On The Road Again From Your Rep It s been one crazy winter season so far. Wind, snow (lots of snow), sleet, ice, and rain; high winds; temperatures ranging from the 20 s to 20, back to the 60 s, which resulted in ice jams on area rivers and lots of flooding and now back down to single digits. Sounds to me like a great time to start planning summer trips. There are many Retread events around the county to consider, including our own Western PA Rally at a new location. Keep reading for more information. Please consider leading a ride or volunteering to help out in the registration area. We had a perfect day for our Winter Banquet this year. It was great to see so many of our Western PA Retreads, including Arvilla Karns. A special THANK YOU to everyone who donated a total of 208 pairs socks. Four organizations were the recipients of your generosity: Liberty House, a transitional housing facility for homeless families in Meadville; The Liberty House, a transitional housing facility for veterans in Erie; The Homeless Overflow Shelter, in Erie, run by the Erie United Methodist Alliance; and the Cambridge Springs Jr/Sr High School. Great conversation, fantastic food, numerous prizes and lots of fun was had by all in attendance. For more on the Winter Banquet, look inside to read the full story by Kathy Wilcox. Effective January 1st, Art Grantz, has turned the Eastern PA leadership over to Bill & Nancy Lingenfelter and their assistant reps, Ed & Kathy Benner. Art will continue as our Mid- Atlantic Regional Director. He will also continue to oversee the Mid-Atlantic Rally, manage the membership cards for the Mid- Atlantic Region and serve on the International Board of Directors. On a more somber note, the past several months have seen the passing of three Western PA Retreads. Fred Hershelman passed away on November 5th, following a 10 year battle with cancer. Linda White passed away December 17th, due to complications from surgery and on January 3rd, Bill Neill passed away unexpectedly at the Butler Memorial Hospital. Our sympathy, thoughts and prayers, go out to the families of these Retreads. They will be missed. I wish each of you a Blessed New Year and look forward to seeing you at meetings and events throughout the year. More than 50% of our members renewed for 2018 by November 30th so they could be included in the drawing for a free 2018 membership. The lucky winners, Larry & Kathy Brown, were drawn at the Winter Banquet on December 2nd. If you haven t renewed yet there is a form inside you can fill out and mail back while you watch the snow fly. Don t miss out on future newsletters. RENEW NOW!

2 The End of an Era 6/26/84 7/4/17 My 1984 Honda Aspencade is heading for Dallas, Texas. For those of you who may have known of my past year of hospital stays, operations and recuperations, I would like you to know that I am on the mend and doing better. I have wanted to thank the Retreads for a long time, for all the years of rallies, adventures and sightseeing. For the memories, for all the wonderful, down to earth, remarkable people and for making my life more worthwhile. I purchased my Gold Wing shortly before joining the Retreads. The initial reason for the purchase was to save on gas. I rode it to and from work, winter and summer for a couple years until I realized that what I was saving on gas, I was spending on tires and that the winter riding caused so much corrosion I had a really difficult time changing my brake pads. I decided to get into a car pool. About the same time, I was looking into the Gold Wing Road Riders Assoc., The Christian Motorcycle Assoc., and the Retreads. After spending some time with each of them I went with the Retreads. That began a whole new adventure, a whole new reason for riding. As a side note, my first bike, at the age of 40, was a 400 Kawasaki and I failed my motorcycle test 5 times because I couldn t do the figure 8. Realizing my advancing years and medical concerns, I have been trying to sell my bike for several years. I was beginning to consider some type of trike conversion when my nephew, from Dallas, Texas, started to express interest. Today was the day. It is still a beautiful bike, still in good condition and Dan is mechanically inclined to be able to take care of it. Sorry, sad, emotional; the end of an era. No, I haven t given up riding. I have down-sized to a 400 Suzuki Burgman and a 150 Honda Grom. The Retreads are still on my calendar and with God s Blessings, many more years of meetings, talking and sharing stories. Thank you Retreads. You are much more than a motorcycle Club. 3 WESTERN PA RETREADS 2017 WINTER BANQUET As told by Kathy Wilcox Thirty four Retreads came together for our annual winter banquet. It has become a tradition for the lovely activities center of the First Church of God in Franklin to be the venue for our party. We enjoyed pre- dinner visiting and then sat down to a fabulous meal. This was the fourth year that the ladies from The Fox Street Church of God agreed to cater our dinner. It was a day for home cooking, and we were not disappointed. The buffet menu included baked chicken and braised beef (both with homemade gravy), homemade mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, coleslaw, tossed salad, dinner rolls, and red and green Jello salads. We also enjoyed cherry cake and of course bottomless coffee pots and a big bowl of punch! The ladies even created lovely decorations to make the room festive for us. We loved the black top-hat centerpieces. So did Darryl! A favorite part of the day is scoping out the variety of items on the Chinese auction table. This year the table was again laden with goodies. There were so many choices and only 10 tickets each! Multiple decorative items were scattered between a huge variety of articles including a Coleman picnic set, jewelry, steak knives, an electric heater, tote bags, a ladies purse, tools, candles, mini blinds, picture frames, a 1000 piece puzzle, a hunter s head lamp, several belt buckles and even a ceramic camper bird house! Those items getting the most tickets were candy, popcorn and nuts, followed by beautiful handmade items brought by our own Retreads. John Docter s bird feeder is always appreciated as are the handmade leather and crocheted treasures created by Duane and Betty Jones. Darlene Phillips crocheted a beautiful afghan. Tucked in with the chinses auction items was an envelope containing a free registration to the Mid-Atlantic Retread Rally in Lancaster Pa. for Spring 2018 won by Carol Feazell. Other lucky folks were Judy Grossman and Darryl Boleratz who won $25 gift cards donated by the Eastern Pa Retreads. Jan Archer was delighted to be going home with John Docter s bird feeder. The two popcorn tins were won by Arvella Karnes and Mark Shonka. Darryl Boleratz, Arvella Karns and Betty Jones each went out the door with a container of nuts. It was great day and most everyone went home with something, but Judy Neal won not only the 1000 piece World s Most Difficult Puzzle but so many other auction prizes we lost count! Kim Docter did not disappoint us with new brain games- three of them!! Right after eating a huge meal we had to wake up and solve Christmas riddles. We were challenged to remember Christmas trivia, Christmas songs and even what grandma was drinking when she was run over by a reindeer! We did great for old folks but are embarrassed that we challenged Kim on a few of the answers- and we were wrong! Many thanks to Kim Docter for all her hard work coordinating the event and games, and hugs to Beverly, and her crew, who worked hard to prepare the delicious dinner! Church ladies really are the best cooks!!!!! We wish everyone a great winter and look forward to seeing all in the spring, God Bless!
