Over the years I have written many GWRRA articles and a few have reached our publishing pinnacle of Wing World. One that I am very proud of one entitled Family Reunion and while it didn t make it to Wing World, it was reprinted, with permission, in several other newsletters. It really expresses the true feelings that Lisa and I have towards rallies, and I offer it again as we approach registration for our NM District rally and the currently open registration for the Region Rally, later in this issue. One of the events for the Region Rally will be the Region Couple of the Year selection process, and Gary Smith and Patricia Warwick will proudly represent NM. It is easy0 to see this couple as continued leadership in GWRRA, and continued friends to all in this association. Last year, it was our honor to serve as judges in the NM District COY selection process and had the opportunity to get to know them better. At that time, they served as Wylie s escorts, and NM-F COY among other things. Since then, they have stepped up BIG TIME as NM-ADDs, NM-F ACD s, NM-F Social Butterfly Coordinators, 40 to Phoenix Coordinators for the Moriarty stop, and frankly anything else that we, as District Directors, and their Chapter has asked of them. On April 1 st, we will have the honor to install them as NM-F CD s at the chapter gathering. Couples who have participated in COY selection processes will tell you what an honor and privilege it is to represent their chapters, districts or regions, and furthermore how bolstered and confident they felt when they saw and heard the support of their friends in the audience. When I put the pieces together, we have our District COYs, who are more than deserving of our support, participating in the Region COY selection process, at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa, May 26-28, 2017, which is a beautiful venue at a very affordable price considering their $30 return which can be used for food, drink, golf, spa or other hotel amenities during your stay. All that is missing is your registration for the region Rally and your support, cheers and show of your love for this couple as they represent YOU at the Region Rally. Please register and plan on being at the selection process to show them your love and support. Here is the link to make that happen: Please also help us to welcome the 40 to Phoenix riders in Moriarty on April 3 rd. These are fellow GWRRA members who have ridden from the east coast, or have joined the tour at some point along the route on their way to visit GWRRA national HQ in Phoenix. Refer to the flyer in this edition for more info, and please let Gary and Tricia know if you will be able to support this event. If you can help with door prizes, please also let them know. For more info see or contact Gary and Tricia at triciatalkn2ya@gmail.com or GLS650@msn.com. Please reserve the dates of Sep for our NM District Rally. We expect registration to begin in April, and have a lot of different and fun thing planned for this event, that you won t want to miss. 3

GWRRA is frequently referred to as the world s largest family, and we act like it. Like most families, no matter our differences we frequently come together to visit with one another, share some meals, meet new members of the family, and participate in family activities according to our culture. You can think of it almost like the Annual Thanksgiving dinner, but within GWRRA, we call these Rallies. We move it around to different family locations each year, and then we all go over the rivers and through the woods (or desert) in order to gather with the family. the Pre-Registration period is over, the cost of registration goes up a bit, so the best value is now because Pre-Registration closes.) Please join us at the kids table (NM District) this year or you will be missed. For more info For online Registration Well, our annual family gathering for the region is about two months away and this year it is in Tucson, AZ at the W Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa. So the organizers can make appropriate plans, we are being asked to RSVP (we call it registration.) Sure, we can just show up at the door, we are family, and of course are welcome to do that, but it really helps to let the organizers can make the best plans for us, so they know how many to set the table for, and make other arrangements. You are invited, you are welcome, you are almost expected to be there, but your family will understand if you can t make it. (If you aren t there people will ask where you are and ask if you are okay.) You know you want to go, so this is a great time to register for the Region F Rally. (As in previous years, once 4

Asimple "thank you" is all that is needed sometimes. I would assume you and I began our journey in the GWRRA for a variety of reasons, but whatever the reason, here we both are still going along with more or less vigor than when we first began. Perhaps we are excited about the next adventure with friends we know. Perhaps we are getting tired of the pressure of the business of the organization. We all see things from different viewpoints which tend to lead us to where we are in the organization now. Some just want to ride and not get tied up with all the bureaucracy and others seem to be born with involvement in the blood. No organization I've ever been a part of or heard of ever runs perfectly all the time, so there is a need for intervention and insight. No one agrees with everyone else all the time either. Our differences don't define what is right or wrong, just different. I heard a thought put very well the other day in the definition of tolerance; in that we can decide to be different, but the right way to be different is to be civil about our differences. Be civil? Yes, civil even when we don't agree with the direction or decision of the day. And while we are considering a shift in our actions (four fingers at me), let's not forget a simple, "thank you" to those who have decided for whatever reason to become involved at any level in the hobby we love. That is all that is needed sometimes. A simple pat on the back and a "thank you". So, I'll start and say to those who have served in GWRRA with particular interest towards the District organization, training or any other support effort, THANK YOU. Let's not let the burden of the work fall on a few. Please, don't wait until someone asks if you can, be willing to step up where you can. And, if riding is all you are comfortable with doing, then help by thanking those who can or are otherwise willing. We all play a role in the collective. Don't let someone go unappreciated or unnoticed. There is a burden here that many, if not most of you are directly aware and sometimes it is not about the business, but the people. People can be difficult and frustrating. The pay is really high (insert sarcasm) for them to have to deal with my issues along with other matters. So, be determined to be a problem solver for whoever you can and be determined to find the good or fun in the action. I still believe people are generally good natured, but we all appreciate a simple "thank you" along the way. Ride Safe. 5

For Tricia and I it has been extremely busy. We have taken over as Chapter Directors, conducted the planning and setting up of the 40 to Phoenix, trying to get the trike scheduled for maintenance, I am having to work 80 hours a week until my coworker gets back from vacation, trying to arrange a motorist awareness event the end of April (thank God for Debbie on this), working on getting our vests ready for the Region Couple of the Year on top of everything else that keeps seeming to pop up. I can honestly say our plates are full right now. Since I am planning on riding to Phoenix, which will be the first long ride of the year, I want to remind everyone to conduct the proper maintenance on your vehicles and ensure your T-Clocs are conducted. April 3rd, the district will be hosting the 40 to Phoenix in Moriarity, New Mexico. Please let us know if you are coming as we must give the caterer a count as to the number of people that are coming for dinner. The dinner will consist of Roast Beef (Chicken is Optional) with mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuit, cake and drink. All for $12.00 per plate. We must be contacted by March 28th to have your meal secured for the night. We have been invited to participate in an event that is being hosted by R & S Honda on Wyoming on April 29th. We intend to conduct a Motorist Awareness and Membership drive at this event so plan on coming by and helping if possible and if you are in town. M ay is our Region Rally in Tucson, Arizona. If possible, please come and support Tricia and I as we compete for the Region Couple of the Year. Wing Ding will be in Texas this year in August. Many are planning on attending as it is close to New Mexico. September is our own District Rally which will be held in Ruidoso New Mexico. Tom and Lisa have found wonderful accommodations at the MCM Eleganté. They have given us a great rate, lots of vender space and much more. 6

Distracted Driving Awareness Month April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, so pass the word to your acquaintances and remind drivers that motorcyclists are out there. We should encourage them to expect to SEE motorcycles and further encourage them to specifically look for us. "Fender-benders are rare in collisions involving motorcycles," said Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) President Tim Buche. "When two cars collide, the result is often minor damage that's repaired a few weeks later once insurance kicks in. However, when a car hits a motorcyclist, there is often direct vehicle-to-human contact. I can't imagine the lasting guilt of doing harm to a person who has a life and a family who loves them, especially if that harm is the result of a momentary lapse of attention. This can all be avoided by making a conscious effort to drive fully engaged and undistracted." The MSF has created a collection of insightful tips for car and truck drivers. In this publication (Quick Tips: Ten Things All Car & Truck Drivers Should Know About Motorcycles), the first tip has to do with drivers actually looking for and seeing motorcyclists: Over half of all fatal motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle. Most of the time, the car or truck driver, not the motorcyclist, is at fault. There are a lot more cars and trucks than motorcycles on the road, and some drivers don't "recognize" a motorcycle they ignore it (usually unintentionally) Driving Cell Free According to the National Safety Council (NSF), "Hands-free is not risk-free." A full 80 percent of safer to use than their hand-held counterparts. "But that's just not true," said MSF's Vice President of Training Systems Dr. Ray Ochs. "Distraction happens in the mind, and the mind can become distracted by the conversation itself, whether that conversation is hands-free or while holding a phone. The goal should be to completely free up the mind to focus on the task at hand - driving and watching for others, and doing so safely." To do just that, the NSC recommends driving "cell free." It should also be mentioned that some motorcyclists are able to use their phones while underway and, of course, many of us use CB s and Blue Tooth communication. All of which takes our focus away from operating the motorcycle. The National Safety Council has created a list of strategies to avoid cell phone distractions while driving. They include: Turn off your cell phone, or put it on silent, before driving. Toss your cell phone in the trunk or glove box to avoid temptation. Pre-set your navigation system and music playlists before driving. Schedule stops to check voic s, s and texts. Tell coworkers, family and friends not to call or text you when they know you are driving. 7

The Mind's Eye In the book, Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us), author Tom Vanderbilt echoes Ochs view that driving undistracted is all about what takes place in our minds. "Keeping one's eyes on the road is not necessarily the same thing as keeping one's mind on the road." Unfortunately, drivers don't have to be distracted very long to get into trouble. According to Vanderbilt, one study found that almost 80 percent of crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes involved drivers who were not paying attention to traffic for three seconds or less before the event. Distractions while driving can take many forms, such as eating, personal grooming, or even just mentally reliving a recent unpleasant conversation or event. "Beyond a certain threshold, the more that is asked of human attention, the less well it performs," says Vanderbilt. One group of drivers - teens - is especially at risk. Teen drivers are more distracted than previously thought, according to a new study by the AAA Foundation of Traffic Safety. After analyzing approximately 1,700 samples of incar video footage, researchers found that 58 percent of crashes among teen drivers were due to distracted driving. The study found that the main causes of distraction among teen drivers were interacting with other occupants, cellphone use, looking at something inside the car, singing or moving to music, grooming and reaching for objects. "Improvement in any skill requires a constant intent to improve," said Buche. "A great time to become intentionally focused on driving undistracted is while putting on the seatbelt. This is a safety-related action that we can all use as a trigger to make a focused, intentional commitment to driving undistracted." The same mental preparedness can be triggered when we put our helmets on. Ride safe, remain focused, and be of aware distracted drivers. Stop the Texts and Stop the wrecks! 9 Are You Riding your Bike? Or is your Bike Riding You? Recently, I was riding my motorcycle and admiring the sound of the engine. I imagined how the inside of my engine might look. I have put many miles on my bike but I never considered if my engine ever would quit. I have changed tires, oil, fork seals, brake fluid, fuses, and light bulbs. I have scheduled repairs and installed a host of updates. Yet, I have never had anyone open the engine to see if that little power house was ok. We may not understand the total capabilities of our motorcycles. The question is, do we have the capacity to maximize the capability of our motorcycles? If we do not maximize our skill levels, we are not maximizing the capability of our bikes. Let us examine to mechanics of turning your motorcycle in circles. Of course your bike will turn; however, if you are in control, the bike will go in the direction in which you are looking. For a controlled turn, you gently push the handlebars in the direction of the turn, while controlling your speed, feathering your clutch, and look in the direction of where you want to go. With this action, you are in full command of your motorcycle. If you were traveling at sixty-five miles per hour and observe a tire in your path and you had to make a quick maneuver to avoid the tire, do you know exactly what to do? The key to increasing your riding skills is training. The question becomes what kind of training does one need to increase the capabilities of the rider over the capabilities of the motorcycle? I suggest two key critical classes; a Motorist Awareness and an Advanced Riders Course. We are aware of automobiles yet many drivers are not aware of motorcycles. A Motorist Awareness class will provide you with information about what motorists are doing behind the wheel and how you can educate the motoring public to make riding safer. An Advanced Rider course will develop your skills to manage your bike while on the road. Classroom training, however, is not enough. Practice enhances what have you learned. Once you have attended class you should continue reading material on motorist awareness and practice maneuvers in an open parking lot. Motorcycles have been around since the second half of the 19th century. We have a lot to do to make Motorist Awareness a household term. We can be a voice for increasing motorcycle safety. Just imagine - if each one of us could inspire twenty motorists to be aware of their distracted driving habits. How many motorcyclists could be saved? Just think - if you increased your capabilities at managing your motorcycle, would you feel safer? There are classes waiting for you. There are instructors yearning to teach. I hope to see you there! Walter Clement District Trainer Motorist Awareness Coordinator 9

It is great weather to be out on the bike. Ours is still in parts in the back yard. Hopefully the paint job will be done soon and we can get it all back together so that we can join others in our chapter on some rides. Next month is the 40 to Phoenix ride. They will be stopping in Moriarity for the night and there will be a great get together. There will be lots of food, fun and opportunity to meet some new friends. Several chapters will be holding different Motor Awareness events over the next few months. Please try to attend and show your support. Hopefully those stopping by our booths will learn something and keep an eye out for our motorcycles. The Region F convention is coming up in May over the Memorial Day weekend in Arizona. Have you register yet? If not, why not! Take a minute and go online and get registered. Don t miss out on all the fun! GWRRA FRIENDS, I NEED YOUR HELP! A s a fundraiser for the GWRRA Motorist Awareness Program, I am planning to raffle off a quilt at Wing Ding 40. It will be made from the Wing Ding emblems from t-shirts from Wing Ding rallies past. This is where I need your help. I need at least twenty-five (25) Wing Ding t- shirts, preferably from 25 different Wing Ding rallies. Color and size does not matter. And I may need to use some duplicates. But ideally the emblems have good color. I currently have shirts from Wing Ding 25, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 36, 37, 38. The WD-39 t-shirt is ordered, and since it is for the 40 th anniversary, it will be the center of the quilt. As you can see, I particularly need the older shirts. If you have one or two that you can part with, I will be very grateful. You folks in Region F un can bring them to the Motorist Awareness table at the Region Rally in Tucson (or send them with someone if you can t attend). Or mail them to me: Char Simpson N 29 th Ave Lot 389 Phoenix, AZ Thank you in advance for your support of the Motorist Awareness Program! 10

A s we were going full force on our plans for the 40 to Phoenix event coming thru NM, we learned that our Chapter Directors Danny Branch and Crystal Salazar resigned their positions as Chapter F Directors. Heartbroken for the loss of our Directors, Tricia and I were notified by our NM District Directors, Tom and Lisa Evans, that we would be moved into the Chapter Directors positions immediately, and they will be in ABQ on April 1 st, to swear us in at our chapter meeting. Wow!! What a Shock!! This is not at all how we envisioned things to go for us! We had planned on having time to learn and gain some experience as Assistant Chapter Directors first. However; the cards of life dealt us a different hand, and things hit fast forward. Thank God we have Tom and Lisa to mentor us; as well as having the assistance from both, Danny and Crystal and all the past experience of our chapter staff members. We know that we can count on all our membership to help guide and support us on our new journey. We are committed to our Chapter, District, Region and GWRRA; therefore, we will do our part to ensure that the proper transition takes place. So, as we continue in our efforts to pursue the Region Couple of the Year Award, we now are looking to see if there is anything left for us to do. We still need to finish up our resume one last time and have it looked over by Becky and Bill. Other than that, we have done everything that we can possibly do to be ready. With that, we conclude this article by saying that we sincerely hope to see a lot of you at the Region Rally to represent New Mexico and to cheer us on at our competition. Bring some noise and let everyone know that we have a lot of spirit in NM. Thank you so much for your support, and may the Luck of the Irish be with us all! The road to the Region Couple of the Year competition has been fast and furious for us. Our roles as ACDs and running the past three chapter meetings, changing into becoming the Chapter F Directors, along with running for the Region Couple of the Year, planning Socials for the chapter and of course always making sure Wiley is happy and entertained there is an awful lot of action in the household. 11

Iwant to thank everyone for the compliments I have received on the Newsletter. As most of you know I also compile the newsletter for Chapter R and was especially honored when our Chapter won the Newsletter of the Year. It is being submitted to Region for competition. This is all good, but I really don t deserve the credit, If it wasn t for all the time the members of the teams spend in writing and submitting the articles there wouldn t be a newsletter for me to put together. They supply the cake and I just add the frosting and make sure that the newsletter meets the criteria that is in guidelines put out for GWRRA Newsletter. With that said, I want to take to thank both the District and the Chapter Teams for making the commitment to share their thoughts and their knowledge in the form of articles for the newsletter. This is not an easy thing to do, especially if team members hold more than one position in a Chapter, a Chapter position and a District or Region position, or both. Most of our District team members write at least two articles per month and some write more. This is somewhat stressful when it comes to deciding on a topic that hasn t already been covered in previous newsletters, then putting it into words that people find interesting enough to read. My job just consists of deciding on a format and adding an eyecatching picture or graphic. I m sure there are many people who like me, go to the library or the book store and the first thing you do is look at the title, then the cover. It s the cover that catches my attention and usually is the main reason I chose a book to consider. If I like what the cover looks like, then I look at the back of the book for the review and if I like that, I continue with the process of purchasing or checking it out. I know the old saying, You can t judge the book by its cover and that s true, but what s on the cover catches the eye and sparks the curiosity. I enjoy doing the newsletters. I sit in my chair with my laptop and while John is watching his guy programs that I could care less about, I copy, paste, search for graphics and pictures, format and reformat and create a newsletter that I think would be fun, informative, easy to read and follow some sort of a theme. I try to make the emphasis on GWRRA, motorcycles, places in New Mexico. I love creating something that when you receive it, you will want to download and read it from cover to cover and save it for future reference. I hope you all enjoy the newsletter and appreciate the efforts put forth by all of us on the NM Chapters & District teams. Until next month 12
