W e had a great time visiting with Chapter N at Village Pizza. It s not too big a secret that Lisa and I are transplants from NJ, where Pizza is king, so we are pretty critical of pizza but I think that Village Pizza offers a good pizza buffet at a good price. It was a large group in attendance in the back room and we had a great time. That evening we attended Chapter F s Social Butterfly at Romano s Macaroni Grill with two big tables of friends. Thanks to Gary and Tricia for organizing that event and for putting us up for the night in their lovely home. We got to spend time with GG, who, like most Pit Bulls, is just a big sweet dog who loves attention. Think about Valentine s Day, In Hawaii, in the middle of winter with your friends. Sound like fun? We ve put together a Fun, Friend and Fund raiser February 9 16, 2019 on Norwegian Cruise Lines Pride of America to Hawaii. A payment of $1, will be made to GWRRA New Mexico District for every 8 cabins sailing from Indulge Yourself Travel s Vacationing for Funds Program. We already have 12 cabins of friends booked for the Trip, and we are really looking forward to it. You have about 2 years to put aside money for this fun event. Please see the flyer in this issue for more info. The Colorado District Rally is at Chaffee County Fairgrounds, Salida Colorado, August 24-26, It is right before Wing Ding, so my plan is to leave Salida, CO straight into Grapevine, TX. I m hoping that the folks from CO are putting together a ride that I can join. The Host Hotel is the BAYMONT Inn & Suites, 7400 W US Highway 50, Salida, Colorado Phone Cite Colorado GWRRA to get the special rate of $105+tax & fees. GWRRA rate is NOT available with online booking or the 800 Number. See the Flyer in this issue. We look forward to seeing who will be serving as Chapter Couples of Year and Individuals of the Year. It is a great honor to be recognized by your respective chapters in these programs. I know of no one who has been selected by their chapters, that didn t have fun being COY or IOY, especially if they chose to participate in the District/Region/International selection process. They remain friends for years with others they met in the selection process. Congratulations to all the COYs and IOYs and HAVE FUN!! This year the NM District will be hosting the Moriarty stop for the 40 to Phoenix Ride at the Moriarty Civic Center, 202 Broadway. If you are unfamiliar with the event, Riders will depart Wilmington, NC on March 28 t and enjoy a 12- day ride across the US to Chula Vista, CA, with a stop at GWRRA HQ in Phoenix on April 4 th, picking up riders along the way. One of their overnight stops is Moriarty, where the NM District will host their stop. The riders do an escorted ride into town with one of the local law enforcement officers. The ride departs rest area mile marker 208 at 4:45 PM on April 3 rd, so you can join them and ride in, or go directly to the Civic Center. Tricia and Gary, our ACD s have stepped up to coordinate the event. A HUGE THANK YOU to them for their efforts. Please contact them if you can volunteer to help park bikes, or any other assistance, or just to attend the event and help greet and welcome the riders. Gary: GLS650@msn.com Tricia: triciatalkn2ya@gmail.com). Of course, you are welcome to join the ride at any point along the route and ride with them, and visit GWRRA Home Office the next day. For more info about the event, please visit their website at 3

Ispoke of Safety in my recent Chapter R article as a matter of becoming too familiar with the word and forgetting why we use it with a reference to motorcycle safety. Here, I would like to remind each of you (and myself) of the term, FUN. There is a saying, If you can t have fun doing whatever you are doing, maybe you should consider not doing it. Life is too short to do something you don t enjoy and with people you don t enjoy doing it with. Our song leader in church always asks why we sing joyful songs with such frowns on our faces. He challenges us often to smile while singing. OK, I have tried to smile and sing at the same time and it is a bit like patting my head and rubbing my tummy at the same time. It just appears in any organization, that there are those who have a difficult time doing whatever they do, with whomever they do it and enjoy themselves. I am sure you have met them; frowny-faced, grumps who make every day a bad day. I have had employees who I just knew were unhappy at work. I ask them if they want to be someplace, anyplace else. I am not too surprised by the answer; sometimes, yes, they would like to be someplace else. That is when I offer to help them get there. No harm and no foul. Look, they are doing more damage and disservice to our organization, me and themselves, by sticking with something they hate. Of course, I believe having fun is a matter of one's attitude. Looking forward to the day's events or meeting with folks you like, or doing something as a group is often fun. GWRRA is fun people, doing fun things with a hobby, that I think is fun. Are there difficult times and words that should not have been said? Of course, we are all capable of doing or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. I have found that by not wearing a chip on my shoulder and being too sensitive when someone slips up, is a reminder of someone who overlooked something I did or said in the past. We all have bad days and difficult times. Wouldn t it be fun to run across folks who were not gloomy? I can even see it as a payit-forward event if I am the first to overlook my "friend's" slip-up. I love that bumper sticker that states, "A bad day fishing is always better than a good day at "; you fill in the blank. I am unsure if there is such a thing as a bad day of riding the motorcycle, though. Getting caught in bad weather, mechanical break-downs, etc. just build the testimony for our future stories. I also recognize there are folks who just want to get under your skin on a variety of matters. Frankly, if they do, then you let them win. My wife and I share a daily thought about being a light to others; a beacon of sorts in a gloomy world. Well, I am a bit ornery, so if I am to be a light, I like being an LED light; bright and sometimes annoying. But, never dark, never determined to add to the trouble or gloom. There is never enough time to worry and fret over matters that should not otherwise matter. So, put on the correct attitude and go along with GWRRA's motto word, FUN, and have yourself some of that! 4

A s you may recall, our first article discussed our appreciation for our older riders and the legacy they helped to create with the GWRRA. During our Chapter F meeting conducted this February, we asked the membership what they thought of creating a ride especially for the older members of the GWRRA who no longer ride motorcycles but would love to get back on one and feel the wind in their faces and the smell of the fresh air once again. The older members were extremely appreciative of the thought and loved the idea about being able to ride again. So, with that in mind, Chapter F is creating what will be known as the LEGACY RIDE. Once a year, in the months of May or June, Chapter F will be offering to take out any and all elderly GWRRA members and their wives, on a motorcycle ride. The ride will be no longer than 1 hour to any destination and the riders can choose to ride on a motorcycle, trike or even in a car. A person s physical capability may restrict them to what they are able to ride on, but the whole point of doing this is to show our older members our appreciation for all they have done and how important they are to the chapter. Our hope is to take these members out on a fantastic ride, stop and get something to eat, talk and share stories of our past rides and have a joyous time. Just share the day with each other s stories. We invite the other chapters to consider either joining us, or to schedule a ride of your own. This is such a wonderful event for every chapter in the District to adopt, and we surely hope it extends throughout GWRRA. Should you have any questions or want more information concerning the Legacy Ride, please feel free to contact Tricia or me. Have a blessed day! Gary and Tricia 5

A sk any rider and they will probably tell you their biggest safety concern is being cut off, run over from behind, or otherwise violated by another driver in traffic. It s a constant and very real threat to our safety. In addition to our skill as riders, we do have additional control of the situation by making ourselves as highly visible as possible. Doing so will reduce the number of surprises we face every day and help us avoid getting blindsided by someone else s last-minute decision or lack of attention. It s also fortunate that most of our motorcycles have a wide frontal profile which research shows reduces accident risk. When speaking of high-viz (high visibility) riding gear, what is the most visible and attention getting color for the human eye? The brightest, most visible color you can wear during daylight hours is fluorescent yellowgreen. Why? Human eyes are built to be most sensitive to that wave length of light (~550 nanometers), at least during the day. See the below color chart. But when the sun begins to set, our perception of color starts to change. Not wanting to get all nerdy with a detailed explanation of rods and cones in the eye (remember your high school biology), suffice to say that we lose the effectiveness of high-viz colors in the dark. That s why it s important to pay attention to reflective materials for night riding. Below are some tips to stand out in traffic: Wear a florescent, reflective safety vest or a brightly colored riding jacket Wear a white or brightly colored helmet. Use strategic lane positioning Use a headlight modulator Flash your brake light at stops Incorporate reflective materials (reflective trim piping and other reflective materials) Install auxiliary driving lights Avoid riding at night, dawn and dusk Install a louder horn Avoid riding at low sun angle times Avoid riding in poor weather 6

It s also relevant to mention that the American National Standard for High-Visibility Safety Apparel (ANSI/ISEA 107) has established standards for industrial safety apparel. Only three colors meet its rigorous criteria: fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red, and fluorescent red. Looking at the color sensitivity chart explains why these colors are the safety standard and we also see variations of these colors in our motorcycle gear. Ok, for those sharp readers who are asking themselves, what about blue since the chart shows it as a high color point, similar to green and red? According to the UCLA Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, blue is the hardest color to see as more light energy is required for a full response from blue-violet cones (high school biology again), compared to green or red. At a certain light level, a blue-violet color appears darker than green or red. In summary, if you feel you need a bit more visibility on the road, riders now have a broad selection of high-viz riding gear to choose from. Of course, the wise rider never lets their guard down, even if their high-viz gear makes them look like a rolling bumble bee. We all know there is always some distracted motorist out there that will try and make that bee a part of their grill work. BE ALERT!! 8 W ow this weather has been great for riding. Although I wouldn t know because Bill has our trike torn all apart, replacing everything that is broken or messed up and then getting it ready for painting. So hopefully it gets put all back together right. Everyone keep me in your prayers or better yet keep him in your prayers that it all goes back together or someone is going to be unhappy! We are very pleased to congratulate the following Chapter Couple of the Year and Chapter Individual of the Year for 2017: Chapter F Wayne & Penny Holly Couple of the Year Chapter R Henry & Billie Grimm Couple of the Year Chapter TX1A Robert & Jody Janisse Couple of the Year Chapter R Skip Barrows Individual of the Year Chapter TX1A Gail Reynolds Individual of the Year It is a tremendous honor to be chosen and recognized as a COY or IOY. Please congratulate them, and lend your support by encouraging them to compete at the District level. We had several entries in the NM District Newsletter contest. The team scored each newsletter according to the Newsletter Handbook. The winning newsletter is the April 2016 Chapter R newsletter and the newsletter editor is Judy Metts. Congratulations! This newsletter will be submitted to Region to compete for the Region Newsletter award. All the newsletters that were submitted were very good and professionally done. You could tell the editors go to a lot of trouble to make your chapter proud and to give you something that is worth your time to read. So please take time to tell your chapter editors Thank You for all they do and READ your newsletters! As District MECs, we encourage all of you to find a way to enhance Chapter membership. Find and educate non-members about GWRRA. Let them know that we try to live by the GWRRA motto Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Invite them to your next gathering. If you have a new or perspective member at one of your gatherings, be sure you take the time to personally welcome them. You just might be the reason they decide to join GWRRA. 8

The Road to Region As we get closer to heading down to Tucson to compete for the Region Couple of the Year, we are trying to see if there is anything that we forgot to do. Nothing that we can think of! But then all of a sudden, another opportunity to improve ourselves and to add to our resumes presents itself to us. What could that be you may ask? That is, to host the 40 to Phoenix ride as it comes into Moriarty, New Mexico this April. For those of you who may not know, this year the 40 to Phoenix ride will arrive in Moriarty on April 3 rd. Tricia and I volunteered to host the event along with the New Mexico District Team. Although things are in the planning stage, we can give you an overview of what to expect if you are able to participate in the event either in the actual ride, or just helping with the Moriarty welcome, dinner and send-off. Riders that day will meet at the I-40 rest area at the 208 exit, between the times of 3:45 PM and 4:45 PM. At 4:45 PM the riders will leave the rest area (via police escort) heading westbound on I-40, and travel to exit 196 wherein they will exit into town. Riders will travel to the Community Center and park behind the center for a group photo. Riders will then leave their motorcycles there and enter the community center to be welcomed by local GWRRA staff and have a catered dinner. After dinner, a presentation will be given to the 40 to Phoenix riders along with a short safety briefing conducted by Chris Boyle. We will have drawings for door prizes and a We hope to end the event early as we realize riders are tired and need to prepare for the next day s leg of the ride. This is a great experience to get to be part of such a wonderful event such as the 40 to Phoenix ride. I do not know if you are aware that this is the largest members planned and run ride in the nation. It has also become a GWRRA sanctioned ride. So, come one and come all to the fun, comradeship and exciting experience of the 40 to Phoenix ride. For those of you who cannot make the ride to Phoenix, no problem. Come and have a wonderful dinner and fun time in Moriarty, New Mexico. More information will be sent out very soon. For us, this is just another Road to Region. Gary and Tricia 9

I hope everyone is taking a few minutes to read the newsletter. As I receive the articles from the Team I realize how dedicated they are to serving you. If anyone thinks there isn t anything to do, just look at the section Around the District and see when and where the gatherings are held. It sort of reminds me of the A.A. Chapter that meet in our Parish Hall 5 days a week. If you look for a gathering, there is one available for you to attend. In fact, there are one or two gatherings every week-end! All the Chapters, except for Chapter R, which David West calls the nomadic chapter, are fortunate to be able to hold once a month socials. There are rides, rallies, and educational opportunities. There is always something to do! If you want to join in on a ride, call the Chapter Director or the Ride Coordinator and let them know you will be joining the group. As a member of Chapter R, we would love to have you join us at the Three Rivers Petroglyphs on March 18 th. You can meet us and have lunch, hike the trail or just socialize at the visitor center. Plans for lunch haven t been made yet, but whether it be in Tularosa or Carrizozo or a picnic, you are welcome to join us. Chapter F is having a ride to Belen and the Harvey House that day also, so if it s not convenient to join Chapter R, you might want to consider joining Chapter F on their excursion. Recently we have received invitations from other chapters to attend their socials. How nice is that! We have crashed the party a couple of times and have been welcomed with warm greetings and hugs. As I have said before, The more you attend the district functions, chapter functions and become involved the more friends you meet. That uncomfortable feeling of not knowing anyone goes away and you become part of the larger group So I encourage you to read the newsletter, find out what is going on in the District and if you happen to be in the area, attend the planned events. The newsletters also contain flyers on rallies and registration. There is information on GWRRA cruises to the Panama Canal and Hawaii on the back pages. We have booked our reservations for the Panama Canal Cruise and are looking forward to sailing with our GWRRA friends! Why not join us? 10
