Candler AZ March 7-10 Rally 2 Silver Cove RV Resort Silverlake, WA. April Rally 3 Pleasant Valley RV Park Tillamook, OR. May Rally 4 Midway RV Park Cenralia, WA. August Rally 5 Silver Spur RV Silverton,OR. Septemper Hello Pacer Family. I can t believe we only have one more rally left this year. Time seems to be flying by so quickly. Teri and I are spending the rest of the summer at Mercer Lake Resort doing a lot of fishing and shopping along the coast. The first three rallies were great as usual. Our attendance has been outstanding. Thank you everyone for all the fun and great food! The May rally at Silver Spur was exceptional. The barbeque was a great idea. We will be doing that again in September at Woodburn. The resort also put on an ice cream social that was well received. Dennis did a great job as rally master at the Northwest Area Rally in Albany. Everyone pitched in and volunteered at several different jobs. That is what is so special about our chapter. You don t have to look far for volunteers. The August rally was just last week, and I am still trying to recover from eating all the delicious food. Even though it was quite hot Friday and Saturday, everyone had a good time. Saturday, we braved the heat and went on a tour of Wolf Haven, walking through the forest observing the wolves in their environment. What an interesting tour. We learned more about how the wolves lived than we ever knew. Thanks to Kathy for the great tour. Don t forget our last rally of the year at Woodburn. Amazingly enough we have 15 coaches signed up! It should be a fun rally with outlet store shopping nearby, gardens to see, drag racing nearby, and golf courses too if you are so inclined. The rally will be September See you all there! Our vice presidents have done a fantastic job arranging rallies for next year. The first, unofficial rally will be outside Quartzite, Arizona, in the usual place out Plamosa Road, January 23 to 26, The big tent will run from January 21 to 29, so Teri and I will get to the camp site on January 21 st. Looking forward to seeing as many as possible there. The first official Pacer rally will be April 21-23, 2017 at Silver Cove RV Resort, WA. This is where we met a couple of years ago at our 25 th anniversary. It is a great venue for a rally. Martie needs hosts for this upcoming rally, so step up and put on a show. It s not that difficult! Presidents message continued on page 3 PACERS NORTHWEST, AN FMCA CHAPTER
2 October 2016 Keeping Pace Page 2 Nusy Says by Kathy McKnight September 2016 Aloha my fellow Pacers... hopefully everyone has stayed hydrated and cool in our uncommon heat this summer. News update from the Nuzy corner... I have to share some heart breaking news with you all. In April we lost one of our new members, Ron Garner. He fought a courageous battle for a year with pancreatic cancer. Our Lord needed him. Our heartfelt sympathy and prayers were sent to his partner and our fellow pacer sister, Arlene Wilt. Arlene we feel the pain in your loss and continue to pray for your healing. Thinking of You wishes and Get Well wishes were sent to: Don and Gwen Dowdell for their son s surgery, Gary Tilley for his unexpected hospital visit, Doreen Daggett for her wrist surgery, Sylvia Wynandts for her deviated septum surgery and Madelyn May for her back surgery. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all for successful continued recovery. On another note, Don and I just returned from our latest rally at Washington Land Yacht Harbor in Lacey, Washington. We enjoyed hosting the rally and had a lot of help from our co hosts, Don and Gwen Dowdell. In total we had 13 rigs, 30 people, which included 2 visitors on Friday-Steve Barber and Gloria, 2 visitors for potluck breakfast and our afternoon outing to wolf haven on Saturday morning-irv and Elaine Fleming and last but not least, newly retired Navy Chief Corey Baker (Dennis & Marties son) who joined us for dinner and a game of CLR on Saturday evening. We showed that young whipper snapper how wild we can be! It was so great to catch up and spend time with each of them. A big Thank You to Corey, he was the big winner at CLR and contributed all of his winnings to the Christmas family stocking. I believe in total we raised $200 for the Christmas stocking, A Great Big Thank You to All. Those of you who couldn t attend you were so greatly missed! Seven of us arrived on Thursday; we all went to dinner together that evening to our standard stop when heading south, Hawks Prairie. When we returned to our rigs we sat out in 2 groups, one at the Evans site and on at the Hedlund site, watching the Seahawk game. Friday was an explore on your own, happy hour at 5 and hot dog and hamburger barbeque at 6 followed by cake and ice cream and great conversation. Saturday we had planned an outing to Wolf Haven in Tenino. I had my doubts on whether we should go, as the weather was quite HOT. When I asked for a consensus on what everyone would prefer, they voted to continue with wolf haven regardless of the HOT weather. Gladly so, we had a wonderful guide, Patrice, who was very knowledgeable on the resident wolves and coyotes there. although they were not very active. I was told the ideal time to visit is May. After wolf haven some did go and explore on their own, visiting the capital, the farmers market and the water front. All in all everyone left the rally pleased and with a full belly. One thing discussed at the rally was a possible destination in Canada. Dale and Sandra Riley have already been looking into possibilities. I don t know about you but I am very excited about this. Continued on Page 4
3 October 2016 KEEPING PACE Page 3 The second rally will be held at Pleasant Valley RV Park located approximately six miles south of Tillamook, Oregon, May 18-21, This is a new park for us, however Butch assures it will be a good one! We need hosts for this rally as well. The Northwest Area Rally will be held June 22-25, 2017 at the Cowlitz County Event Center in Longview, Washington. Once again, the Pacers will serve the ice cream. Should be a good rally with lots of room at the event center. The August rally will be back to Washington at the Midway RV Park, August 18-20, 2017, just outside Centralia, Washington. Hosts are needed!!! The final rally of the year will be at the Silver Spur RV Park, September 21-24, This will be a big rally with officer elections for the upcoming year for virtually all new officers. So, make sure you put this one in your calendars and volunteer to be a host. Please try to make it to as many rallies as you can for great visiting, fun, and of course delicious food. Also, think about being a host for one of the rallies, or at least a cohost. It is not that much work because everyone attending a rally steps in and helps. All you need to do is plan the menus and provide whatever food you want, which is reimbursed by the club. Potlucks work great, so it doesn t take much, and help is always available. As always, thank you again to everyone attending the rallies. And a special thank you to all of the officers. Butch and Martie have done an outstanding job as well as Tom, Glenda, Kathy, and Rudi. Thanks again. See you down the road at the next rally. Drive safe and stay healthy. Bill President Joke of the week A doctor advises an elderly couple to write themselves little notes to combat their forgetfulness. When they get home, the wife says, "Dear, will you get me a dish of ice cream? Maybe write that down so you don't forget?" "Nonsense," says the husband. "I can remember a dish of ice cream." The wife replies, "Okay. Would you add some strawberries on it?" To which the husband replies, "No problem a dish of ice cream with strawberries. I don't need to write that down." And so he goes to the kitchen and his wife hears pots and pans banging. The husband finally returns and presents his wife with a plate of bacon and eggs. She looks at the plate and asks, "Hey, where's the toast I asked for?"
4 October 2016 Keeping Pace Page 4 Next rally September 22-25, Woodburn RV Park, rally hosts Bill & Teri Hollenbeck and Ken & Kay Hedlund. REMEMBER: Life isn t meant to be easy, It s meant to be LIVED. Once again I will ask for every ones assistance; if you know a member who is under the weather, having surgery, celebrating a special occasion or just has some news, information or a story to share, please feel free to contact me: Kathy hynprncess@yahoo.com. All information is greatly appreciated. Safe travels to all and if we don t see you before, hope to see you in Quartzite at the unofficial rally. MAHALO! Kathy Silverton, Oregon Rally What a great weekend at the Silver Spur RV Park in Silverton, Oregon. We had 11 member coaches attend the May Rally. Gary and Kathie Ayers invited their good friend from Newberg, Russ Miller, to join the fun. Russ and Jean Bailey stopped by on Saturday to visit. It must have been Jean's lucky day, as she bought a Coach purse from the flea market collections. Go, Jean! Some members took advantage of the beautiful Silver Creek Falls area with lots of hiking and photo opportunities. A few of us made it to the Mount Angel Abbey which was established in It is a private Roman Catholic seminary, university, and community of Benedictine monks. The view over the valley was spectacular. Gary, Kathie, and Russ braved the wet weather on Saturday morning to attend the annual pet parade in downtown Silverton. The dogs stayed in the car-smart thinking on their parts. A big thank you to our hosts, the Evans's and the Noels, for the delicious brats and sauerkraut, not to mention the German chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The resort staff were very accommodating, by providing coffee and tea every morning, a pancake breakfast on Saturday, and an ice cream social that evening. One more thing...dorothy Park celebrated her 92nd birthday. She was out riding her bicycle in the early morning hours before some of us were out of bed. Congratulations Dorothy! Hope to see everyone at the Northwest Area Rally, Albany, Oregon, June 23-26th

6 October 2016 KEEPING PACE Page 6 TECHNICAL INFORMATION PROVIDED BY DENNIS MARTIN I was working on the motor home today, wondering what I was going to write this article about. I decided to talk about several things. As I was washing the roof of the motor home, I realized it had been a couple of years since I had been up there. I found 2 repairs while I was washing. The rubber boot to the antenna was off of the electrical connection and it was hard as a rock which was due to the hot sun in the south. The second thing found was paint had come off of a plate in between the 2 air horns on top. The 2 repairs, were minor and only took a couple of minutes, however if they were not taken care of, they could become major repairs in a few years down the road. So you can see how important a roof inspection can be. Doing this could save you money and most likely down time. The roof is one area that is usually forgotten until it does become a major job. I would also like to remind our member on the GEO METHOD for our black tank. The way we do this is fill the toilet bowl with water. Add a cup of Dawn detergent, a cup of Calgon Water Softener and flush. This mixture will coat the pipe and tank causing it to become slippery, so that everything goes through the system and comes out when it is dumped. If you haven't done this, you do this 3 or 4 times in a row, and then do it every 3 rd or 4 th time you dump after that. Martie flushes about 1/4 th of a cup of bleach, by its self after the initial flush of soap and water softener. Some people feel too much bleach can be harmful to the seals in the system. This method works very well and we have been using it for a long while. I would recommend one thing. If you haven't had your tanks cleaned out, you should have this done first. If you have any questions regarding the GEO METHOD you can google it and there is a lot of information. It has been around for a while. I will be ending this article talking a little bit about a water hose. Our members that have hose reels will not be able to use this hose on the reel, because it is a collapsible style hose. The hose is a Teknor Apex Zero-G RV and Marine Hose. A 25 Ft. hose cost about 30 dollars depending were you buy it. It is manufactured with FDAsanctioned materials. It is drinking water safe, which means it is lead free. It also carries a 5 year warranty. The company claims the core prevents kinking, remains flexible in cold weather and does not retract or expand. What makes this hose nice is that it folds up and doesn't take up much space in the compartment. I have used the hose only one time, so I am still in the process of evaluating. I know it sounds like the one shown on TV that lasted one time and then you threw it into the garbage can. I can tell you the quality of this hose is much better. I will see how this one works out. Until next time may all your travels be safe, Dennis Martin

8 October 2016 Keeping Pace Page 8 More from Silver Spurs A few unsolicited notes on the Pacers NW Oregon Rally held on May 19, 20 and 21 at the wonderful Silver Spur RV Resort in Silverton, Oregon. This was our first Oregon rally of the year and was well attended. I believe that we had 21 or 22 Pacers and guests participating. The park has been completely renovated and the Staff at the resort were fantastic to work with throughout the stay. For the first time in recent history, we were treated to an opportunity for a Resort provided $5 breakfast. Pancakes, bacon, syrup and whipped cream along with assorted fresh fruit all for the fee of $5. We also were treated to an Ice Cream social provided by the park. There was a $2 charge, but it was provided for with the $10 food assessment for each Pacer attending. Other great food was available such as Rudy s famous Sausages boiled in beer and then finished on the grill. Wow! Tasted by most of the folks present. And Sauerkraut using Louise s family recipe of bacon grease added to the simmering forever sauerkraut. Then the next evening we had a bring your own meat to barbee.. with other fixins provided by the hosts. I have included several pictures so those of you who missed out can have an appreciation of the facility and the first Oregon Rally of the year. This resort has a catch and release fishing pond, enclosed outside eating areas with heat, and perhaps the most accommodating staff that we have encountered. It is close to the Oregon Garden, Silvercreek falls, Mt. Angel and the Benedictine monastery. The monastery has a very well known rare book collection kept in a specially controlled room. Gutenberg Bibles and early Christian writings on papyrus. We have already scheduled a revisit to this facility in September of Please plan to attend the park for that rally. Some of the pictures may need explanation: The $5 breakfast with real whipping cream! Great to see Mickey and Pat McCallum in such improved health after spending much of the winter in Yuma in the hospital and recovery centers. Welcome back!

12 October 2016 Keeping Pace Page 12 WOODBURN RALLY September 22-25, 2016 The final rally of the year was held at the Woodburn RV Park, Woodburn, Oregon, September We had 16 coaches in attendance with one couple, Russ & Jean Bailey, in attendance Saturday without their coach. Two families, the Hedlunds and Hollenbecks, arrived on Wednesday as hosts to get set up and everything arranged with the resort. The other members started arriving Thursday afternoon and evening. Everyone spent Thursday setting up and catching up on old news and new news. Dinner was arranged out at Elmers Restaurant. Friday began with coffee in the morning, then everyone dispersed to shopping at the outlet mall and site seeing. Friday night dinner consisted of a potatoe bar provided by the hosts with potluck side dishes. Dessert was cookies and ice cream. All was wonderful as usual. After dinner, we played a new game of Pacer s Poker. We had 28 people playing with $3.00 each. The game went on for over two and a half hours with Martie Martin finally winning the pot. She nicely donated the winnings to the Christmas fund. Thank you Martie!! Saturday morning started off with a breakfast potluck which was wonderful. After breakfast, Bill ran the final business meeting of the year with announcements of next year s rally dates and elections of officers for next year. Minutes of the meeting will be sent out by Glenda. After the business meeting, all of the gals set out for more shopping while the guys settled down to watch football. Saturday night dinner was barbeque with salads, corn, and baked beans. Dessert was served with pie and ice cream (of course). After dinner, everyone gathered to play a resounding game of card bingo. Several ones won small pots with the big winner being Dorothy Park. Way to go Dorothy. The rally wound down Sunday morning with a continental breakfast of coffee, fruit, cinnamon rolls, and (of course) left over pie and ice cream!! The rally turned out great with everyone having a good time. See you all next April at Silver Cove RV Park, Silver Creek, WA. And, for those heading south, we will see you in Quartzite, Jan. 23 rd!! Hosts, Ken and Kay Hedlund Bill and Teri Hollenbeck The Northwest Area Rally will be held June 22-25, 2017 at the Cowlitz County Event Center in Longview, Washington.
