7 The Negro Motorist Green Book Gilmore Museum Exhibit Decades after the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment ended slavery, African Americans continued to suffer unequal treatment, especially in the South. Jim Crow Laws discriminated against blacks in nearly every aspect of public life, including travel. Although the roads and highways were free for all to use, doing so was not easy for people of color. The Green Book, written by Victor Green, provided guidance for African American travelers to find safe locations to sleep, eat, shop and purchase gas. Locally, the guide was used by the Idelwild Chamber of Commerce in Michigan to assist black American travelers in the 1950s and 1960s. Green Book Movie Dr Don Shirley is a world-class African-American pianist, who is about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony Lip, a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx. Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation. (A must see film)
8 Keeping Moisture Out of the Distributor By: Happy Begg, Palmetto A's of South Carolina. Have you ever driven your Model A in the rain, and have it act up? This is exactly what happened to me while on tour with the Western Carolina s Model A Club. First the car began to periodically skip. Then it began to really run rough, until it just died! The cause? Moisture in the distributor. Well, this is a common problem in cars without electronic ignitions. Usually, the humidity level in the atmosphere is something the hot engine burns off before coming in contact with our distributors. But, when it rains, there is just too much moisture in the atmosphere and the inside of the distributor cap will begin to sweat. This in turn causes moisture droplets to fall onto the points, thus interrupting the flow of electricity between the ignition coil and the spark plugs. Generally, if you can get the distributor dry, you can go on your merry way. But how to solve the problem before it happens is the real question. Nobody wants to try to stand in a downpour over a hot engine and try to dry out their distributor! WD 40 is the answer! It was developed in 1953 by Norm Larson, founder of the Rocket Chemical Company, in San Diego, CA. WD 40, from the abbreviation "Water Displacement, 40th formula," was originally designed to repel water and prevent corrosion. Another little tool to keep in your arsenal! If every 3-4 months you will open up your distributor and spray the underside of the cap and down into the distributor and the tops of the spark plugs and the plug wires, a rain shower will never leave you sitting by the side of the road waiting on AAA! 11 THE IDEAL MAN Two hundred and twenty college girls in the East were asked some mighty important questions in a special questionnaire regarding the types of men they seek as husbands. Of the two hundred and twenty, only twelve insisted on college graduates. Only two demanded good looks. One wanted an athlete. Fifty were opposed to drinkers. More than 100 stipulated honesty, sincerity, education and culture. Wealth and fame were entirely ignored. But the one quality most in demand guess was a sense of humor! Evidently the girls agreed with the poet that the man worth while is the man who can smile. If this questionnaire is indeed representative of the state of women s minds the country over, it behooves all young men to learn to laugh and laugh heartily. Men who are not handsome, wealthy or famous may now console themselves. As long as they have a sense of humor, some girl will fall in love with them. But what man does not think he has a sense of humor? All men seem to be eligible for affection, to judge them by their own opinions. We are inclined to think that the girls practiced a little subtlety, as they often do. We can t believe they want to pass up wealth and fame these things have always lured girls. But being feminine, they mention these things indirectly asking that a man be possessed of a sense of humor in the conviction that wealth and fame come most easily to the men whose sense of humor is most keenly developed. Think of the men you know, and see if this belief does not carry some weight.
