1 Southern Nevada Chapter, Inc. #2735 F E B R U A R Y From the Director s Saddle. When you receive this, we will have completed our first month together. February brings us a ride to Kingman, AZ where we will try out a new restaurant, a weekend in San Diego, a Meet & Eat and our second Meet & Greet. This year, we are going to acknowledge the Meet & Greets by handing out not only the star pins but we will have a special pin with attachments to show how many of these you have attended. As we mentioned at the January General Membership meeting, we are also learning that because of today s economy, it is not as easy to plan a Meet & Eat or book a motel for the weekend. When several of our local restaurants learn how many of us will be there, they want us to order off of a smaller menu or have buffet style with limited choices. One of the ideas of the Meet & Eats was for the members to try out a restaurant and learn if they would like to make it part of their regular favorites to visit again. We will select restaurants that look forward to serving us. The out of town motels are asking us to put one credit card on account to make the reservation for all 25 rooms that we want to hold. Some have even charged more than the price quoted on the Internet. For that reason, when we select a town that we will be traveling to, we will either ask a couple of motels to hold rooms each, or we will only be providing a suggested list of motels in the area. We will always designate one to be the host motel as it will be the place where we will meet for rides. There is a saying, It is not just the destination but the journey. We are going to expound upon that to say It is not just the destination but also the journey. As we are traveling to our destination, we will enjoy the journey. What that means is that if we are heading out on an overnighter and know that we will arrive prior to check in time, we will make an extra stop or longer stops along the way to visit places of interest or sightsee. We can also use these words in our everyday life. Take time for yourself, enjoy life and be thankful for what we have. It is not just the destination but also the journey. Karen S.N.H.O.G. 2 Editor s Note Well its been another great month! I made it through my first month as editor and hope to steadily improve as the year continues on. Thanks for all the compliments on my first month. And a special thanks goes out to all of you who contributed articles to the newsletter in January and February. That s what makes this a real member newsletter. It s all about the members, and your H.O.G. family wants to share in your experiences. Remember, you don t have to be a great writer to submit an article. Just do the best you can and we ll make it look good. And by all means, don t wait for us to ask you, just me anytime. I hope you have all been taking advantage of the great weather we ve been having this January. I was especially pleased to have a beautiful day for the Frosty Balls poker run. What a contrast from last year! I worked the event in 2007 and remember how cold it was that day. You could tell the people who took the long route when they walked into the dealership with icicles on their beards. Have a terrific February and ride safe! GO GIANTS! (since my Steelers let me down!) Your Editor Michelle Nieto Hi, I m Cinda Giesing and I m one of your Ambassadors. I ride a '94 Sportster 883 that I ve owned for twelve years (this April). I m a Life Member of H.O.G. since I was a member of Harley- Davidson Anaheim-Fullerton Chapter for several years before moving to Las Vegas in I became a member with this wonderful chapter in Jan I started to volunteer back when Johnny was activities officer, but didn t become an Ambassador until This is now the beginning of my 3rd year volunteering and I love it. It doesn t matter if I help with putting chairs out, the signing in process, handing out raffle tickets, selling tickets, cutting the birthday cake, helping with registration sign-up, helping at poker runs, or phoning and saying hi to new members but what I really like is welcoming the new members when they join. I love to tell them what s happening in the group, help them get acquainted with sign-up and show them where to sit so they can introduce themselves later in the meeting. Ride safe, see ya! Cinda Giesing Ambassador Ambassador s Corner PAGE 2 If you re interested in being an Ambassador, please let us know at one of the membership meetings. You can download an application form by visiting and clicking on the membership forms link.

5 The Hair of the Hog Ride People started arriving at ABC around 8:00 A.M. to socialize and take advantage of Starbucks. Karen Heriford gave a welcome and thanked everyone for coming. She then turned us over to Jim Larson. He said we were going to Kingman and would be eating at the Cracker Barrel. Then he explained the route we would be taking over Hoover Dam, south on 93, east on I-40 to the turn off for the Cracker Barrel. He asked if there were any new riders with us, then proceeded to go through our hand signals. We lined up with Jim as Lead and Wendy Smith as deuce. We rolled out of the parking lot in staggered formation down 93 to the dam. We slowed down and went into parade formation to cross over to Arizona. Some tourists took our photos as we passed by. Once across the dam, past the new bridge construction, and through the curves the pace picked up as we headed out onto the highway. There was a tailwind all the way to the Kingman turnoff onto I-40. What a change! We were going about 60 MPH but it felt like 100. The Cracker Barrel got us all seated in short order, which is a major accomplishment when a group as large as ours arrives in mass. I had Mom s Pancake Breakfast. After fueling at the Chevron Station, we headed out onto I-40 to 93 to the Laughlin turnoff. This time we had a cross wind. I rode with a starboard list to my old T-Sport across Golden Valley. As we headed into Laughlin, the wind subsided for awhile until we went charging up over the hill to Hwy 95. As we made the turn onto the road to Searchlight, the wind hit us dead ahead. We were once again moving with an airspeed of 100 MPH and a ground speed of 65. On the way to Searchlight, my main circuit breaker tripped, shutting down my engine. Everyone behind me took notice and rode around me so I was able to pull over to the shoulder of the road. Jim Brown then Karen and Rod Heriford pulled over behind me until a Nevada Highway Patrol Officer came by and told us to get off the roadway. My motorcycle started up and I took off after the group. We said our goodbyes at Terrible s Chevron and lined up for the last leg of our trip. This time I was at the rear of the formation, which turned out to be a good idea because my breaker tripped again. It reset as soon as I stopped so I was off again. JB followed me the rest of the way to Henderson and I had no more mishaps. Every ride is an adventure and this one was for sure. The cold wind pushed us all over the place but we stayed focused and enjoyed every minute. The electric clothes some people had on were a godsend. The Road Captains got us through it all with no problems. Many thanks to all of you for a safe and enjoyable ride. Little Joe De Julius AKA Speedbump PAGE 5

7 By the time you read this newsletter we will have completed our first month of the New Year. We started off with our annual Hair of the HOG ride to Kingman, Arizona for breakfast. The weather was a little cool and breezy, make that cold and windy, but we still had 22 bikes and 31 riders enjoying a great ride. We hope you had a chance to ride in the Dealership s Frosty Balls VI; this is always a great poker run. In January we also had our first Meet-n-Greet, Meet-n-Eat, and first overnighter of the year to Yuma, Arizona. This month we have a 3 day and 2 night overnighter to San Diego. This is always a great weekend ride location, with both the Southern California beaches and mountains as a possibility for a Sunday ride. The weather in Southern California is normally very nice at this time of year, so we should have a great weekend. In February the chapter will also have a lunch ride to Kingman, Meet-n-Eat, and Meet-n-Greet. I would like to invite everybody to join us on our Meet-n-Greet rides. They are a great opportunity for our newer members to meet other SNHOG members and learn about our group riding style. At the January General Membership meeting I introduced your Road Captains for 2008, including our two newest Road Captains: Robert Baldwin and Rex Derby. Please remember that we are working on rides. If at times it seems like we don t mingle or are standoffish, we are trying to focus on the ride. When the Road Captains are not grouped up working on the ride, feel free to stop and say hi, shoot the breeze or ask any questions you may have. Take a good look at the calendars and find the ride or rides that interest you and come join us. I highly recommend riding on at least one of our overnighters if you get the chance. See you on the next ride. Ride Safe and Have Fun Jim Speedo Larson Lead Road Captain From the Road Captains... PAGE 7

9 Hello HOG Family... Sunday the 13 th was my first official ride as a new ambassador so I felt like I should volunteer to put a little something down on paper for the newsletter. It was our first Meet and Greet of the year and I would first like to thank our Road Captains for another safe and fun ride, and thank Karen, our new Director, for a great lunch. Ed and I started the day by being at the dealership at 8:15 a.m. thinking that the ride was at 9:00 a.m. First lesson for a new ambassador - PAY ATTENTION in the meetings and it will give me 30 minutes more sleep on the morning of a ride. We had our pre-ride instructions. I was hoping we were not going to be tested because I left my purse on my bike and had to sneak out to get it so I missed some of what was being said. We got on our bikes and lined up, and as always before a ride, I said my second travel prayer of the morning and felt sure it was going to be a great day of family and riding. I loved the idea that we went Boulder Hwy to Boulder City. It went very smooth. When we got to Boulder park, the weather was chilly and the wind decided to take our lunches out of our hands before we put it in our mouths. So we had to be a little sly holding our subs, chips, cookies, drinks and napkins. I gave up on my plate. We introduced ourselves and I didn t see any new members. Where were you??? This bi-monthly event is for you and we missed all of you. Frosty Balls VI Well at least the Frosty Balls Event did not stand up to its name this year as it did last year. We had nice weather and a wonderful turn out. There were a total of 591 bikes and our volunteers had them signed in, pins handed out and poker card in hand in less than one hour. It seems that most of the riders took the long route, which led them to the Red Rock dealership, to the Rebel store in Blue Diamond, over the hump through Pahrump and then to the Casino in Indian Springs before returning to the main dealership where they received their last punch and their poker cards were opened. There were a lot of great poker hands but the best hand was 4 Jack s, winning a $5000 Gift Certificate. The second best hand was a Diamond flush, worth a $2000 Gift Certificate. The worst hand came in very low at 6, 5, 4, 3, Ace and was worth a $500 Gift Certificate. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all of our volunteers who helped with the event and to all of the Chapter members who participated. Karen Heriford Director We had our pictures taken (always fun on a windy day) and headed back to the dealership to say our goodbyes and go our separate ways. P.S. I would like to thank Director Karen for requesting I volunteer to write this. I actually enjoyed it. If you are thinking about sending something for the newsletter, I suggest you do it. You will probably do it again. Ride safe and keep that chrome on the up side. Jacquie Tozier Ambassador People came from all over to ride the Frosty Balls! H.O.G. Ladies hard at work... PAGE 9
