1 Volume 7 Issue 4 What s New Ringwood Forest and Price Nature Center are going to receive total makeovers in the playground department. In the next few months, visitors to these parks will see quite a change: the old playground will be removed from Ringwood Forest and both Ringwood Forest and Price Nature Center will receive new play structures. The new playgrounds will have new drainage, and wood chips will replace the sand that is currently on site. Both play structures will be colored to blend in with the natural environments in which they will be placed. Other improvements you may have noticed this summer included wood chipping under some of the benches in the dog park and turf repair. In the beginning of the summer, we also fought a water main break at Imerman Memorial Park; through the early part of summer, several leaks were located and fixed in the water line. Thank you for your patience during our construction. We are working to keep the parks beautiful and safe for you. Feature It s back! Are you a dog lover? Do you purchase stock dog calendars from the store to grace your walls during the year? 2 2 Recreation Station Programs Fall 2007 Wednesday, October 24 Dog Days Howl-a-Ween Costume Contest The Saginaw County Parks and Recreation Commission, WKCQ, and the Pet Supplies Plus store have teamed up to bring you another Howl-a-Ween! You and your dog are going to have a riproaring good time celebrating Halloween with us at Imerman Memorial Park. Ribbons will be awarded for costumes (on your dogs, of course). Not to worry, all participants will go home with something! When choosing your dog s costume, just remember that your pet has feelings too -- you wouldn t want to have their doggie friends laugh at them! The event will be held at Imerman Memorial Park. Registration starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 6:25 p.m. Judging at 6:30 p.m. Cost: Free Saturday, November 10 Birds of Prey Have you ever felt the intense rush of air from a turkey vulture s powerful wings? Have you ever looked an owl straight in the eyes? Have you ever been to a wildlife presentation that you wanted to see all over again as soon as it was finished? If you answered yes to these questions, then you ve seen Joe Rogers Birds of Prey before and you know this is one show you won t want to miss. If you answered no, it is time you came out to see bird expert extraordinaire Joe Rogers from the Wildlife Recovery Association. Whether you have seen him before or this is your first time, come on out to a live bird presentation at the Butman-Fish Library. You are sure to not be disappointed! Cost: Free Saturday, December 1 Science Alive! Live Animal Program Come see a biologist show a collection of exotic critters. Hands-on contact with parrots, turtles, snakes, or maybe a chinchilla will be sure to stimulate further learning. The presenter will also discuss the special characteristics that assist scientists to classify animals. Come to either show for a great time. Cheffy s Recipes - Chocolate Mice Cookies Please get an adult's help to melt chocolate! 4 (1 ounce) squares semisweet chocolate 1/3 cup sour cream 1 cup chocolate cookie crumbs 1/3 cup chocolate cookie crumbs 1/3 cup confectioners' sugar 24 silver dragees decorating candy 1/4 cup sliced almonds 12 (2 inch) pieces long red vine licorice DIRECTIONS 1. Melt the chocolate, and combine with sour cream. Stir in 1 cup chocolate cookie crumbs. Cover and refrigerate until firm. 2. Roll tablespoonfuls of dough into balls. Mold to a slight point at one end (the nose). 3. Roll dough in confectioners sugar (for white mice), and in chocolate cookie crumbs (for dark mice). On each mouse, place dragees in appropriate spots for eyes, almond slices for ears, and a licorice string for the tail. 4. Refrigerate for at least two hours, until firm.

Points can be earned by attending any Saginaw County Parks sponsored event, drawing/taking pictures of any of the Saginaw County Parks, or coloring the coloring sheets off the Saginaw County Parks web page. Each activity earns two points. Minimum of four events required. It is so easy anyone can do it! Pick up your patch card at any park event! Are you looking for a location for your special outing? We have the perfect place for any occasion! Pavilion reservations are ideal for company picnics, family or school reunions, graduation parties, birthday parties, church groups, clubs, and anyone who would enjoy their outing in a beautiful Saginaw County park. The William H. Haithco Recreation Area provides modern bathrooms, playgrounds, fishing docks, volleyball courts, and five picnic pavilions. Imerman Memorial Park provides modern bathrooms, a fishing dock, a volleyball court, a playground, horseshoe pits, basketball and tennis courts, and four picnic pavilions. Haithco Recreation Area, Imerman Memorial Park, and Price Nature Center on January 2, Did you know that each year the Saginaw County Parks and Recreation Commission offers over 50 programs that you can attend? Programs are held at a County Park facility or indoors at the Butman-Fish Library during wintery months. Saginaw County Parks is looking for lightly used sporting equipment, art supplies (craft paint), taxidermy (game species), animal pelts, and much more to enhance our programming. Animal taxidermy we would like: rabbit, fox, squirrels, beaver, deer, bear, raccoon, skunk, possum, etc. (skins, skulls, or mounts).
