1 June 2013 Message from the Mayor Happy Summer everyone! A lot has been going on since our last newsletter. If you have been walking about you will see that both Radium playgrounds are under construction and soon to be operational. The kids are waiting with bated anticipation. New trees are being planted on the boulevard, the number of solar lights has tripled and 8 of our volunteer firefighters have taken their First Responders course. Congratulations and a big thank you to each and every one of them for all the extra time and effort they put in to being ready to keep us all safe! Radium Events Committee presents Other changes coming up soon are: Our Mountains Shall Bring Peace to the People sign will be relocated shortly and will be remounted with a new structure in keeping with our entry signage theme. We will be installing modern welcome signage that includes moveable copy to advertise our special events and festivals. We have constructed phase two of the Radium Pump n Jump biking facility. We are exploring the potential, through training and funding partnerships, to construct a roof over the outdoor rink. On the May long weekend I was welcoming 400 Bow Valley cyclists at their 30th Anniversary dinner in the Rink and the skies opened up a roof would save many events from being ruined by weather and give us a much needed larger hosting venue while keeping the integrity of an outdoor rink. We will be developing a community energy plan and then undertake an energy assessment and potential upgrade to the Community Hall. We will continue monitoring flows in the Forster Creek drinking water watershed to build a baseline of seasonal and yearly flow data. The staff and Council met mid May and went through a strategic planning session, with Gordon McIntosh walking us through the process. It built camaraderie and put us all on the same page for moving forward over the next 5 years. All of the Council hopes to see everyone out and about this summer don t forget to visit the library, listen to Music on Main Street, hike the Sinclair Creek and Old Coach Trail and mostly say hi to the business owners we re all happy the winter s over! 3 Enlarged and Improved Pump & Jump Bicycle Track During the spring, a crew of dedicated bicycle trail builders were busy once again at the Pump and Jump Track maintaining and improving the track which was completed last year, and increasing the size of the track with Phase 2. This new phase includes an intermediate line with bigger hills and more opportunity for jumps. The Rotary Club of Radium Hot Springs Sunrise came forward again this year with a substantial donation to assist in funding Phase 2 of the Pump and Jump Track. Many thanks to the Rotary Club!! There will be a Grand Opening of Phase 2 coming in June. Watch for the date on the Village website! Thank you to everyone who volunteered and participated in Corks & Forks this year. It was held on May 25 and was the first Annual Fundraiser for Tourism Radium Events Committee. So many volunteers donate time and energy to put on all the fabulous events in Radium we do each year but on a shoestring budget! At Corks & Forks we had a small but generous group. Keep your eyes and ears open for the 2nd Annual coming up next year let s fill the room and have some fun and support our small but mighty Village!!! Radium Community Space Survey The Village of Radium Hot Springs invites your household to provide feedback on its community arts, culture, leisure and recreational facilities! Do you envision multi purpose spaces for leisure activities such as dance, yoga, children/senior craft and recreation programs or spaces large enough to hold dances, banquets and community celebrations? Perhaps you support expanding hiking/walking trails and outdoor spaces. The Village of Radium Hot Springs is seeking feedback on current community spaces, ensuring they have the necessary amenities, features and services, without duplicating other venues and community commercial spaces. This research is being undertaken as a Master s Project and a follow up to the 2010 community survey. This information may be used to guide long range planning as the Village updates the Radium 2020 Vision and goals and strategies under Section 3.5 outlined in the 2013 Official Community Plan Draft. Online survey will be available in July. Watch for web address and additional details. Researcher: Jessica Fairhart is currently undertaking a Master s degree in Community Development at the University of Victoria and has undertaken the Village of Radium Community Facility Needs Assessment as her Master s Project. With undergraduate degrees in Leisure Studies and Organizational Communications, community, recreation and municipal services have always been an area of interest to Jessica.
4 Water Conservation Water use, on average, doubles during the summer months. Much of this increase is caused by needless water waste. By using water wisely, you will waste less water and cause less stress on the Village s treatment and distribution system. Users are asked to restrict their water use to watering only on the days that correspond with their address. For example, a house number ending with an even number should water only on calendar days that are even numbered and vice versa with house numbers that end with an odd number. In Radium Hot Springs, water conservation measures are in effect from JUNE 1st until SEPTEMBER 30th of each year, with no watering of lawns and gardens between 10 am & 6 pm. Watering during the heat of the day is ineffective and results in evaporation and waste of valuable water. Adventure Radium 2013 Hey Kids!! School is almost done and that means Adventure Radium will soon return! Come and join Ashlee and her leaders for another season of games, crafts, water fights and fun. Ashlee has been busy planning her calendar and she is thrilled to be able to incorporate the brand new Radium Park Playground into her program. This year s camp begins Tuesday, July 2nd and runs every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until August 22nd. Ages 5-8 attend the morning session from 9:30 to noon, while kids ages 9 and up meet in the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:30. This program has a drop-in fee of $5 or $25/child for the entire summer, or $50 for a family of 3 or more. Kids need to bring water, a snack, sunscreen and insect repellant. Registration forms are available at the Village Office or on the website, (under Things to Do ). So come out and meet new friends, say hello to old friends from last summer, and let the Adventure begin! The Village of Radium Hot Springs is surrounded by forest which inhabits wildlife such as bears, deer, sheep, cougars, coyotes, and wolves. Being so close in proximity to a national park and natural habitat for wildlife it s inevitable that they will sometimes enter the community. If the experience is good for them perhaps because they have easy access to food and/or no threat of predation they will continue to occupy the village. The Village of Radium Hot Springs along with over 20 communities in BC now has a new education program implemented aimed at helping to reduce human-wildlife conflict. New to 2013, WildSafeBC is a program that was developed by the BC Conservation Foundation and is a direct descendant of very successful Bear Aware program developed and ran since WildSafeBC s motto keeping wildlife wild - and communities safe underscores the belief that if we can keep wildlife living in the wild we can, in turn, make our communities safer for us and keep wildlife from coming to harm. To learn more about WildSafeBC please visit their website at www. wildsafebc.com or contact Crystal Leonard, WildSafeBC Community Coordinator for the Village of Radium Hot Springs and the District of Invermere at or radium@wildsafebc.com.
5 New Playgrounds Coming S on!! There has been a lot of activity in the main park in the Village with old playground equipment being removed, and the site enlarged and prepared for a brand new playground layout. The playground will be complete in the next couple of weeks and will provide both primary and intermediate aged users a great active playing opportunity. Once the playground in the main park is completed, reconstruction of the Kirk Street neighbourhood playground will start. This playground will also have an exciting new look with bright colours and new activities. Generous funding for these projects was provided by both the Government of Canada through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund program and the Lake Windermere District Lions Club. Join a Parks Canada Interpreter for a fun-filled evening program June 27th- August 31st Programs begin at 8 pm from the Redstreak Campground theatre Learn about bighorns and bobcats on an evening walk to a panoramic view point every Saturday.
