1 Travel Diary, De Panne, Belgium Monday by Kjell Effenberger 12L School started 08:30: Meeting all together with other students from the sustain.me Erasmus + project. There we played some games, to get in contact with the other people from other countries. After the warmup, we heard the first presentations from various countries (about their topics or sustainable architecture). We also made a presentation on sustainable architecture focusing on Wilhelmsburg in Hamburg. First break at 10:00 Continuing presentations at 10:30 After the first presentations (between 09:30-10:00) we continued with them and heard some more presentations, for example from French girl who travelled to China and talked about the eating habits and aspects of sustainability there. Another presentation was spontaneously held by Kjell (myself). It was about the oil-conflict in the Middle East. Lunch at 12:00 Quite early on this day we had our first lunch in the school. We had red cabbage, potatoes and some meat. For desert, we could choose between waffles, fruit or other sweet things. It was great. Working on our survey questionnaires at 1:00 After a one-hour break, every country started to work on their own survey questionnaires about sustainable housing in their own countries. We summarized all the results of the questionnaire on one paper, which showed the results of each country. We weren't able to finish it completely, so we will continue working in the coming days. Preparing teaching lessons for other classes at 2:00 The last exercise we had was to prepare presentations/teaching lessons for other students of the school in De Panne, who haven't been involved in the whole sustainability project. The teachers divided the students in groups of three people from different countries and gave them a sustainability topic like food or clothes, they had to work on. We will present our lessons on Friday. School s out 4:00 After a hard and exhausting first day in the school, we were finally allowed to go home. Time to hang out with new friends and host families!

2 Tuesday Belgium by Mikey Bradley 12L 8:30 : Meeting at school 9:00 : Presentation by Pieter on sustainable housing. Why are we talking about sustainable housing?, why is sustainable housing important?, what are sustainable ways of housing ( examples ), evolution of housing, model of sustainable housing and social housing. 10:00 : Short break ( 30min ) 10:30 : Presentation Florence, Kjell, Mikey about sustainable housing in Wilhelmsburg ( green architecture, General information about Hamburg, special houses ( Woodcube, Water-house, Hybrid-house), covering of A7. 11:00 : Presentation from other countries ( Italy, Spain ) Italian Presentation about GSE 11:30 : Questionnaire housing (survey) conclusion of the questionnaire from Germany 12:00 : Lunch 13:00 : Press at school ( Interviewing of the different countries and taking pictures ) 14:00 : walk on the beach (little tour of de Panne ), History of de Panne ( first king, world war 1) 15:30: back at school (END OF DAY )

3 Wednesday by Vanessa, 10b We met at the school and drove the bus after 3 hours of driving to the Foamglass factory in Lommel. In the factory the people gave us a presentation. Tom Duhoux give us a presentation about sustainable jeans. I think the presentation from Tom Duhoux was very important. The jeans was recycled from old jeans for new jeans. Later we were given some helmets and plastic glasses. In the factory they produce glass insulation. The old glass is recycled. In another factory we saw mountains of glass pieces. The glass pieces is sorted in the colours green, brown and white. In the factory we got food and drinks. The meal was very tasty. There was mushroom soup with bread and bread with fish or sausage or cheese. The drink was coke, tea, coffee and water. In the factory it smelled weird. In my opinion the day was very good and it was very interesting seeing the produce of glass and the recycled of glass. The glass is better for our world than plastic. 4 Thursday: By Lena Peplinski 10a We met at 8:30am at the parking lot. After everybody arrived we started driving with the bus. We travelled for one hour, while driving we talked to each other or slept. First we stopped at a monument for the young people who fought and died the First World War. We talked a lot about the victims and how people remember the soldiers. We learned what happened in this war and what the difference between both world wars is. After this we moved to some sustainability houses. Our guide told us that the houses are use water from the rain for the washing machines and the toilets. What is more, the houses have solar panels on the roofs. With the energy from the solar panels they make the water for the shower warm. So when the warm water is empty you have to wait until the water is warm again or you have to take a cold shower. When we were ready to talk about the houses we went to a restaurant and ate something. We stayed there for about two hours until we went back into the bus und drove to a museum where we learned more about the First World War. It was very interesting to talk about the different weapons what was used into the war. Towards the end of the museum we went through a trench, to know how it nearly felt to be a solider down there.

5 When we were finished there our last point was a visit on an old cemetery for and from the victims from the First World War. There were so many graves without a name, some graves had a cross on it when the solider had a religion. We also learned that there are so many bodies which still don t have a name and no family found. There were many books with the names of the soldiers lost during World War one. There are so many victims fallen for a stupid and useless war and so many families that lost a brother, a father and a friend. It was an intense day. On Friday, the 23rd of February, which was our last day, we luckily didn t have a stressful day. We stayed at school the whole day. We had to be at school at 8:30, as usual. On Friday, we had to hold our teaching lesson presentations, which we had prepared on Monday. The presentations were supposed to be about different topics, which were given to us by our teachers. My group s topic, for example, was food. So, my group prepared a presentation about food waste and fast food and how people take the best-before date too seriously. Furthermore, we spoke about our own experiences in our school cafeterias individually, because since I was in a group with a French and a Belgian girl, we don t have the same systems. Furthermore, we spoke about meat consumption, about how people can at least lower their meat consumption because it s difficult for many people to give up on meat for good. Since not everybody was presenting at the same time, the students who weren t presenting, had a different task in the meantime.

6 We had to draw cartoons about sustainability. I liked that we could choose whether it was a drawing or cartoon on food waste or air- and/or water pollution etc. That way, we could think for ourselves and the teachers could see what we had taken with us from this whole project. After we had lunch, we listened to one last external presentation about co-housing and visited the photographic architecture project exhibition, from Hamburg. In the evening at school, a bunch of former students from the school came to speak to the current students about their jobs and about what they are studying now, after school-life etc. This was voluntary, but my exchange student and I went to see them. Many students celebrated their last day together by throwing a small party, some students, like me, stayed home and had a calm last evening, celebrating our last evening together with our host families.
