2 Page 2 President s Message August 2, 2010 A s always, it goes without saying, our annual picnic (for as long as I can remember) hosted by Billy and Charleen Carey, was nothing less than fantastic. What a beautiful setting in sight of the lake, and with the air conditioned pavilion. Even in spite of the threatening skies that later did produce a very heavy rain storm, we had almost a dozen Studebakers. That DOES include the Avantis in attendance. It was great to see some of our new members, as well as former members of the North Georgia Chapter, Richard Forgay and his wife Helen, who now live in Forsyth. Richard and Helen had been members of the NGC since back in the late 70 s. They re now current members of the South Ga. Chapter. Wished I could get them to join our chapter after all, it s only $10; what a deal. As for the upcoming Southeast Zone Meet in October, things are moving right along. We have gotten more registrations, as well as reservations at the meet hotel. Chapter members are bringing lots of goodie bag stuffing materials, and we ve received several donations for the trophies. Remember, if you have any good Studebaker friends from out of town, or out of state, make sure you invite them to come and join the festivities at our zone meet. It looks like we re going to have a few things to auction off Saturday night as well. Any other items of interest/value could help the chapter treasury. Everybody get your Studebakers all shined up and tuned up for the trip to Blue Ridge next month. Please everyone remember, this meeting will be held on the second SATURDAY, September 11. I understand this restaurant is very good.don t eat breakfast. See ya ll next month. DRIVE those Studebakers carefully! 4 Page 4 North Georgia Chapter, Studebaker Drivers Club Meeting Minutes August 1, 2010 President Dan Miller opened the meeting. Thank you to Billy and Charleen Carey for again making the annual Fort Yargo picnic one of our most popular events. We had 58 folks in attendance this afternoon. It was wonderful to see Charleen back up and around at her usual pace. We welcomed our visitors and guests, and announced birthdays, anniversaries, and those we need to keep in our thoughts and prayers. Guests today included: Mike and Marsha Byrd s son Stephen; Richard and Helen Forgay from the South Georgia Chapter; Billy and Ina Greene s daughter Vicki Noreen; plus Tim and Guadalupe Taylor s son Oscar and daughter-in-law Liz (newlyweds for two weeks!). We now have sponsors for all our 2011 chapter meetings. Thanks to Ann Lee for contacting members and pulling together the schedule, and thanks to all of you who will be hosting us next year. Barbara Miller had some updates on the Southeast Zone Meet: The Zone Meet planning committee will have another meeting, tentatively on Saturday Sept. 4 th (one week before the next chapter meeting). We will let you know once we have this date firmed up. To date the hotel has 17 reservations equaling 36 room-nights, placing us well on the way toward our 50-night guarantee to the hotel. We are working on getting a vendor to sell food during the Concours on Saturday. As mentioned before, along with the people s choice car judging trophies, we will award trophies for the best scarecrow, and the best vehicle decorated in the fall theme of the meet. We will need to identify judges for those special prize entries. Buddy and Dot Hunt have been working on the trophies, and by end of our meeting today, we had sponsors for all of them. Thanks to: Ron and Connie Bergeron Bill and Charlotte Delli Tom and Maureen Elliott Buddy and Dot Hunt Richard Knoblock Wayne and Ann Lee Lenny and Phyllis Major Dan and Barbara Miller Jim and Carol Nichols Alan and Rochelle Ziglin Dan reviewed the calendar of upcoming events, and noted that Sept. 4 th is International Drive Your Studebaker Day. Charleen suggested that we have signs made that read Studebaker Parking to help direct members and guests to chapter meeting locations and for use during the Zone Meet. Charleen knows a printer who can prepare these, and she will come back to us with a cost estimate. (continued next page)

5 Page 5 Ed Burris told us that Jan Lockmon, Grand Canyon Chapter member and former SDC Secretary, is recovering from a serious infection following hip surgery. Ed shared a color brochure put out by The Studebaker Museum that highlights some of the horse-drawn vehicle restoration projects. The minutes from the board meeting in Glendale are in a more abbreviated format than in previous years, so there may be less detail published in Turning Wheels. Tom Elliott recognized Michael Miller and Emma Crowe, who will be getting married on August 28 th. Barbara said that Michael came to his first chapter meeting when he was 19 days old, which has to be a record for our youngest meeting attendee. Tom passed around his Studebaker wristwatch. Produced only during , this is one rare timepiece. So rare in fact, that it stumped the judges at Glendale! Tom later enlisted George Reitenour to confirm its authenticity. Tom s surgery has been moved up to August 18 th. We will keep you informed as to his progress. The ALS walk will again take place in November. Charlotte Delli presented the Treasurer s report; a copy will be in the newsletter. Of our 17 meet registrations, 16 have entered a vehicle in the judging. Only one truck so far in that group. Bill Delli reports we have 61 memberships currently, representing 107 people. Chuck Lampman has listed another one of the Brown s cars for sale. See the classifieds in The Hillholder for more information on this rust-free 1953 coupe. These two 1953 s are the last of John s eleven cars to sell. Dorothy has donated John s set of Turning Wheels issues dating back to the 1970 s for auction at the Zone Meet. Although Ben Alspach had to leave early to begin a trip out of town, that did not impede his luck in winning the 50/50 drawing, splitting the $120 pot with the chapter. Hobo Bodkin, Ed Burris, Buddy Hunt and Tim Taylor were among those winning door prizes provided by our hosts Billy and Charleen. The next meeting will be Saturday September 11 th, at the Tin Loong Restaurant in Blue Ridge. Details and a map will be in The Hillholder and on our website. No need to RSVP. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. See you next month in Blue Ridge! Please Keep in Your Thoughts and Prayers Steve Detch, who is fighting with cancer. Tom Elliott, as he continues his battle with ALS.

6 Page 6 The Mailbox Editor s Note: Several people at the picnic wanted to know who made the Italian Sausage dish. Rich Knoblock sent the following recipe to Charleen Carey. This was a specialty of Rich s late wife Barbara. A good basic sauce recipe is necessary for the success of any Italian-style dish. Barbara received many compliments on her Italian dishes, and it was because of her homemade sauce. This recipe can be used anywhere a basic red sauce is required, from spaghetti to veal parmesan. The quantities are large because the sauce freezes very well and can be thawed and used with your next creation. You can cut the ingredients in half to make a smaller batch. I have taken her approach, and make the double batch to save time later on. When I made the sausage dish for the meeting, I put the peppers and onions in the sauce during the last half-hour of simmering, saving me the trouble of sautéing them separately and then adding them to the sauce. The peppers and onions will add liquid, so you can use one less cup of water in the sauce recipe. I baked the sausage on a cookie sheet in the oven at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, turning once. Last, the recipe uses only Hunt s ingredients. This is what Barbara settled on, and it will come out consistently well for you if you use Hunt s also. Barbara s Basic Sauce Recipe 2-28 ounce cans of Hunt s crushed tomatoes 3-12 ounce cans of Hunt s tomato paste 6 cups of hot water ½ cup of minced onion 2-4 cloves of garlic, minced 3 teaspoons garlic salt 1 tablespoon sugar ¼ cup of olive oil (or enough to cover the bottom of your pot) Sauté the onion and the garlic in the oil until slightly brown. Add all the remaining ingredients and simmer uncovered for one and one-half hours, stirring frequently to avoid scorching. Taste after one hour, and add more sugar if you think it is too tart.

7 Page 7 Buddy and Dot Hunt won the Best Orphan award with their 1961 Champ pickup at the 6th annual Show and Shine for Cystic Fibrosis Car Show in Helen, Georgia. Thank you, For the pretty flowers. They made my day. I miss seeing everyone. Hope to make the meetings soon. Ina Greene Hobby/Antique License Plates Lenny Major alerted me to a change in the fee structure for Georgia specialty license plates, including the Hobby/Antique plate many of us have on our cars. Previously, owners of qualifying older vehicles could get a Hobby/Antique plate for no additional cost beyond the standard tag fees. With the passage earlier this year of HB 1055, specialty plates (hobby/antique, college plates, wildlife conservation, etc.) will have an additional $35/year fee. Military plates or plates for the disabled are not part of this increase. Lenny also told me that, if you have a hobby/antique plate now, you can take it back to the Department of Revenue office in your county of registration, and swap it for a standard plate. That way you will not incur the extra fee at your annual tag renewal time. You have to do this swap before the tag/decal expiration. I have not tried returning the Cruiser s tag yet, so would suggest you check with your local tag office to confirm you can still swap out your plates. 15 Page 15 STUDEBAKER MEDIA This is a 99 page book based on the articles of the same name that appeared in Turning Wheels in the early 1990s and which won the SDC's Churchill Award for Best Article, Non-Paid. The book contains all the material from the original series, which ran for a year and a half in The Hillholder, and not only replaces some material edited out for the TW series, but has updates and several new items that were written after the TW series was published. "Some Thoughts" is aimed at the first-time restorer, but will be of value to the more experienced; it doesn't try to be a "how to restore a car book", but gives you a look at the decision-making processes, tools, spaces and basic skills you'll need to do a restoration, and will provide a framework to help you structure your project. There are several chapters of Studebaker-specific advice. In the chapter devoted to engine rebuilding, I've tried to describe a step-by-step process that anybody can follow, and I ve tried to include tips I've picked up in building 60+ engines. I've received many compliments on the engine chapter, and I'm glad to finally be able to get it in print. Some Thoughts on Restoring a Studebaker is available for $22.50 USD, plus $4 for handling and postage, for a total of $26.50 to US addresses. Canadian orders add $6.50 USD for postage, total $29.00 USD. To order a second book in the same order, add an additional $3 ($4 USD for Canadian orders). For Australia and Europe, shipping is $12, total $34.50 USD paid by PayPal only. The easiest way to purchase (and the only way if you are in Australia or Europe) is to PayPal the appropriate amount to me at, and mention Some Thoughts in the remarks section. Otherwise, if you live in the US or Canada, send your name, mailing address and a check or USPS money order for $26.50 ($29.00 USD bank draft for Canadian buyers) to: Chuck Lampman 4141 Lynette Ct. Kennesaw, GA If mailing payment, please me to notify me that the check is coming so I can set one aside for you, or get some more printed. (I try not to keep too big an inventory because they are expensive to stock.) (10/2010)
