WOSU Public Media is unveiling a new, broadcast television channel this month called WOSU Kids featuring 24/7 PBS KIDS educational programming. The channel will be available over-the-air on channel 34.4 and on Spectrum cable systems. Now children across our region will be able to watch their favorite PBS KIDS shows from Daniel Tiger s Neighborhood to Super Why! to Peg + Cat anytime day or night. Airing a new broadcast channel is a rarity, so let the celebrations begin! Join us as we officially unveil WOSU Kids on Saturday, June 3rd from 10am to 1pm at COSI and look for community events throughout the summer. PBS stations reach more kids aged 2-5, more mothers with children under 6 years old, and more children from low-income families than any other network. We have a community that especially loves PBS KIDS. Audience research places WOSU very high in the percentage of our audience viewing PBS KIDS on the primary WOSU TV channel compared to stations across the country. This is a public service we are proud to provide and another reflection of what it means to be a mission-driven, noncommercial media organization. The WOSU Kids initiative and many of our local programming efforts are in peril as the Trump administration budget calls for the elimination of all funding to public broadcasting. This would be devastating to WOSU. The tax savings is just $1.35 per citizen and is 100th of 1 percent of the federal budget. You can help by calling your congressional representative and signing up to protect WOSU at: protectmypublicmedia.org. For more information, check out the Off Air blog I wrote on wosu.org. Thank you for your support and for your advocacy! - Tom Rieland, General Manager 2 For detailed listings, visit wosu.org

10 Case Shows Value of WOSU s Editorial Firewall Mike Thompson, Chief Content Director, News & Public Affairs Public radio journalists particularly those who work at university-owned stations were stunned by a recent story out of Tennessee. A reporter from WUTC, the NPR station in Chattanooga owned by the University of Tennessee, embedded herself with students who met with state lawmakers to discuss transgender rights. The reporter recorded and later reported some comments the lawmakers did not want to become public. According to local press reports, lawmakers complained to the university, saying they did not know a radio reporter was in the room and not so subtly noted the university receives state funding. The university s head of marketing and communications then fired the reporter, and ordered the station to remove the story from its website. NPR and journalism organizations quickly condemned the actions. I have great confidence this would not happen at WOSU. We have developed clear written policies that address every issue raised by the Tennessee case. First, our reporters know they must clearly identify themselves as journalists when they go out on a story. The WUTC reporter should have done so and not assumed lawmakers knew her role. Second, WOSU has a clear firewall between its newsroom and Ohio State University and our funders. WOSU reporters and talk show hosts cover OSU like any other news outlet does, and OSU officials, from President Michael Drake on down, respect the firewall. If reporters or hosts make a mistake, radio station managers, not university administrators, handle discipline. OSU administrators would never order us to remove a story from our website or newscast. Even if they don t always like the questions we ask or the stories we report, our university leaders and generous donors fully support our role as independent journalists. WOSU has one of the strongest firewalls of any media organization in the country. We journalists are thankful for that independence which gives you the confidence of knowing that 89.7 NPR News and WOSU Public Media truly operate in the public s interest, free from outside influence NPR News schedule 5am 6am 7am 8am 9am 10am 11am 12pm 1pm 2pm 3pm 4pm 5pm 6pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm + Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Morning Edition BBC NewsHour All Sides with Ann Fisher Fresh Air BBC World Service Columbus on the Record Marketplace Weekend Weekend Edition Wait Wait Don t Tell Me! 11 Exploring Music Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Shostakovich many of our favorite composers were influenced by the political and cultural upheaval surrounding the Russian Revolution of On this 100th anniversary of Lenin s return to Russia, Exploring Music takes a look at Russian music before, during and after the revolution. For the first two weeks of May, it s a journey into the hidden phrases and chords that these Russian musicians used to express their inner thoughts and creativity on this historical path. Exploring Music continues the month with a week (May 15-19) of programs exploring the relationship of man to nature as expressed in music. Settle in for Beethoven s Symphony No. 6 and Strauss Alpine Symphony, among others. The week of May 22nd takes a turn through some of our favorite piano concertos, from Mozart to Rachmaninoff and beyond! For The American Sound on May 27/30, Jennifer Hambrick marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of John F. Kennedy with musical works connected with his presidency and legacy. And the Met Opera concludes its broadcast season with a new production of an old favorite, Richard Strauss Der Rosenkavalier, on May 13. This is rumored to be the last time Renee Fleming will perform as the Marschallin.
