Stirling Point, with its famous signpost and walking tracks, is the beginning of State Highway 1 which traverses the length of the country to Cape Reinga in the far north the journey really does begin here in Bluff. ( Stewart Island / Rakiurais the third-largest island of New Zealand. It lies 30 kilometers (19 mi) south of the South Island, across Foveaux Strait. In the Maori language, it s known as Rakiura which means the land of glowing skies. You ll get inkling when you see the aurora australis which of ten appears in these southern skies. Over 85% of the island is National Park, and most people come here for the hiking. ( We now head towards Bluff to go to Stewart Island. After a Steep climb we now head towards Elm Wildlife tour. The only mainland breeding colony of the Northern Royal Albatross, large majestic seabirds with a wingspan of thee metres, is at the Otago Peninsula. Day 19: Alexandra is an attractive oasis of trees and civilization within the weathered rock landscape of Central Otago. The town boomed during the late 1800s, when huge gold dredges worked the Clutha River. Today Alexandra owes its prosperity to orchardists and wine makers. It's known as the hottest, driest and coldest town in New Zealand. ( Roxburgh is in Teviot Valley on the banks of the Clutha River, 40 km south of Alexandra in the South Island. Roxburgh is well known for its Roxdale fruit and "Jimmy's Pies." It is one of the country's most important apple growing regions and other stone fruit such as cherries and apricots are also harvested locally. ( Cromwell is located in the valley of the Upper Clutha, deep in the heart of the dry interior of Central Otago in a landscape of bare brown hills, of tussock and briar, of purple thyme and tors of schist, of broad basins and fertile valleys, of Lake Dunstan's pristine waters and of gorges carved by two great rivers.
